Interconnection and Competition Among Asymmetric Networks in the Internet Backbone Market
We examine the interrelation between interconnection and competition in the internet backbone market.Networks asymmetric in size choose among different interconnection regimes and compete for end-users.We show that a direct interconnection regime, Peering, softens competition compared to indirect interconnection since asymmetries become less influential when networks peer.If interconnection fees are paid, the smaller network pays the larger one. Sufficiently symmetric networks enter a Peering agreement while others use an intermediary network for exchanging traffic.This is in line with considerations of a non-US policy maker.In contrast, US policy makers prefer Peerings among relatively asymmetric networks.Internet Backbone;Endogenous Network Interconnection;Asymmetric Networks;Two-Way Access Pricing
Current driven instabilities of an electromagnetically accelerated plasma
A plasma instability that strongly influences the efficiency and lifetime of electromagnetic plasma accelerators was quantitatively measured. Experimental measurements of dispersion relations (wave phase velocities), spatial growth rates, and stability boundaries are reported. The measured critical wave parameters are in excellent agreement with theoretical instability boundary predictions. The instability is current driven and affects a wide spectrum of longitudinal (electrostatic) oscillations. Current driven instabilities, which are intrinsic to the high-current-carrying magnetized plasma of the magnetoplasmadynmic (MPD) accelerator, were investigated with a kinetic theoretical model based on first principles. Analytical limits of the appropriate dispersion relation yield unstable ion acoustic waves for T(i)/T(e) much less than 1 and electron acoustic waves for T(i)/T(e) much greater than 1. The resulting set of nonlinear equations for the case of T(i)/T(e) = 1, of most interest to the MPD thruster Plasma Wave Experiment, was numerically solved to yield a multiparameter set of stability boundaries. Under certain conditions, marginally stable waves traveling almost perpendicular to the magnetic field would travel at a velocity equal to that of the electron current. Such waves were termed current waves. Unstable current waves near the upper stability boundary were observed experimentally and are in accordance with theoretical predictions. This provides unambiguous proof of the existence of such instabilites in electromagnetic plasma accelerators
Breeding latitude predicts timing but not rate of spring migration in a widespread migratory bird in South America
Identifying the processes that determine avian migratory strategies in different environmental contexts is imperative to understanding the constraints to survival and reproduction faced by migratory birds across the planet. We compared the spring migration strategies of Fork‐tailed Flycatchers (Tyrannus s. savana) that breed at south‐temperate latitudes (i.e., austral migrants) vs. tropical latitudes (i.e., intratropical migrants) in South America. We hypothesized that austral migrant flycatchers are more time‐selected than intratropical migrants during spring migration. As such, we predicted that austral migrants, which migrate further than intratropical migrants, will migrate at a faster rate and that the rate of migration for austral migrants will be positively correlated with the onset of spring migration. We attached light‐level geolocators to Fork‐tailed Flycatchers at two tropical breeding sites in Brazil and at two south‐temperate breeding sites in Argentina and tracked their movements until the following breeding season. Of 286 geolocators that were deployed, 37 were recovered ~1 year later, of which 28 provided useable data. Rate of spring migration did not differ significantly between the two groups, and only at one site was there a significantly positive relationship between date of initiation of spring migration and arrival date. This represents the first comparison of individual migratory strategies among conspecific passerines breeding at tropical vs. temperate latitudes and suggests that austral migrant Fork‐tailed Flycatchers in South America are not more time‐selected on spring migration than intratropical migrant conspecifics. Low sample sizes could have diminished our power to detect differences (e.g., between sexes), such that further research into the mechanisms underpinning migratory strategies in this poorly understood system is necessary.Fil: Jahn, Alex. The Polyakov Loop and its Relation to Static Quark Potentials and Free Energies
It appears well accepted in the literature that the correlator of Polyakov
loops in a finite temperature system decays with the "average" free energy of
the static quark-antiquark system, and can be decomposed into singlet and
adjoint (or octet for QCD) contributions. By fixing a gauge respecting the
transfer matrix, attempts have been made to extract those contributions
separately. In this paper we point out that the "average" and "adjoint"
channels of Polyakov loop correlators are misconceptions. We show analytically
that all channels receive contributions from singlet states only, and give a
corrected definition of the singlet free energy. We verify this finding by
simulations of the 3d SU(2) pure gauge theory in the zero temperature limit,
which allows to cleanly extract the ground state exponents and the non-trivial
matrix elements. The latter account for the difference between the channels

The scaling dimension of low lying Dirac eigenmodes and of the topological charge density
As a quantitative measure of localization, the inverse participation ratio of
low lying Dirac eigenmodes and topological charge density is calculated on
quenched lattices over a wide range of lattice spacings and volumes. Since
different topological objects (instantons, vortices, monopoles, and artifacts)
have different co-dimension, scaling analysis provides information on the
amount of each present and their correlation with the localization of low lying

Density functional electronic spectrum of the cluster and possible local Jahn-Teller distorsions in the La-Ba-Cu-O superconductor
We present a density functional theory (DFT) calculation in the generalized
gradient approximation to study the possibility for the existence of
Jahn-Teller (JT) or pseudo Jahn-Teller (PJT) type local distortions in the
La-Ba-Cu-O superconducting system. We performed the calculation and
correspondingly group theory classification of the electronic ground state of
the CuO elongated octahedra cluster, immersed in a background
simulating the superconductor. Part of the motivation to do this study is that
the origin of the apical deformation of the CuO cluster is not
due to a pure JT effect, having therefore a non {\it a priori} condition to
remove the degeneracy of the electronic ground state of the parent regular
octahedron. We present a comparative analysis of the symmetry classified
electron spectrum with previously reported results using unrestricted
Hartree-Fock calculations (UHF). Both the DFT and UHF calculations produced a
non degenerate electronic ground state, not having therefore the necessary
condition for a pure JT effect. However, the appearance of a degenerate E
state near to the highest occupied molecular orbital in the DFT calculation,
suggests the possibility for a PJT effect responsible for a local distortion of

Hacia una interpretación mecanística de la migración de aves en américa del sur
Research to date has demonstrated that bird migration is comprised of highly diverse and plastic behavioural patterns. Our objective is to highlight the importance of studying mechanisms underlying these patterns in austral migrants. We focus on the high incidence of overlap in breeding and non-breeding ranges as a particularly thought-provoking pattern. We then explore the opportunities afforded by partial migration theory to elucidate the mechanisms underlying seasonal range overlap. We propose that a mechanistic understanding of migration in South America will both provide a deeper appreciation of the ecology, physiology and evolution of migratory species in the New World, and improve the scientific foundation for their conservation.La investigación reciente sobre aves migratorias ha demostrado que constituyen un grupo que presenta comportamientos altamente diversos, plásticos y complejos. Nuestro objetivo general es resaltar la importancia de estudiar los mecanismos que generan los patrones que caracterizan la migración de aves en América del Sur. Para ello nos enfocamos en un patrón interesante (la alta incidencia de superposición en la distribución reproductiva y de invernada), analizando las oportunidades ofrecidas por la teoría de migración parcial para dilucidar los mecanismos que producen tal superposición. Proponemos que una comprensión mecanística de la migración de aves en América del Sur no solo proveería una apreciación más profunda sobre la ecología, la fisiología y la evolución de las especies migratorias del Nuevo Mundo, sino que también mejoraría los fundamentos científicos para su conservación

In the title compound, [CuBr2(C8H22N4)], the CuII atom is six-coordinate forming a distorted octahedral complex and is bonded to two axial bromide anions and four equatorial nitrogen donors. The equatorial Cu—N bond distances range from 2.005 (8) to 2.046 (8) Å while the axial Cu—Br distances are 2.8616 (17) and 2.9402 (17) Å, thus the six-coordinate Cu complex shows the usual Jahn–Teller distortion. All amine hydrogen atoms participate in either inter- or intramolecular hydrogen bonding to the Br anions
