    Fermi liquid viscosity in a finite geometry

    Forced flow of a Fermi liquid is studied for a cell geometry consisting of two planes with a separation on the order of mean free path. An approximate transport equation is used to derive an integral equation for the velocity profile, which is solved numerically. Results for the total flux through the cell, which determines the dissipation, are given as a function of the Knudsen number N (ratio of cell thickness to mean free path). Effects of specular reflection at the boundaries are considered. It is found that the dissipation has a minimum at N approximately equal to 1/2, and behaves linearly for N greater than or equal to 3. Implications for present experimentation are discussed

    We define twist-two and twist-three quark fragmentation functions in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and study their physical implications.     Measurements of PAN, alkyl nitrates, ozone, and hydrocarbons during spring in interior Alaska

    Measurements of the atmospheric mixing ratios of ozone, peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN), hydrocarbons, and alkyl nitrates were made in a boreal forest ecosystem in the interior of Alaska from March 15 to May 14, 1993. During this period the mixing ratios of PAN, alkyl nitrates, and nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) generally decreased due to the influence of both meteorology and OH removal. Mean mixing ratios of ozone, PAN, C2 ‐ C6 alkyl nitrates, and total C2 ‐ C5 NMHC during southerly flow periods were 24.4 parts per billion (ppbv), 132.1 parts per trillion (pptv ), 34 pptv, and 8.2 ppbCv, respectively. During a short period of northerly flow, mixing ratios of PAN and total NMHC were approximately 2 times the southerly flow mixing ratios. PAN is correlated with ozone, and alkyl nitrates are correlated with alkanes. PAN and ozone mixing ratios exhibit similar diurnal variations on a number of days with an early morning minimum and afternoon maximum. This is likely due to a diurnal cycle in the boundary layer ‐ free troposphere exchange and loss processes in the boundary layer for both O3 and PAN. Higher molecular weight (mw) hydrocarbons and alkyl nitrates are observed to decrease more quickly than the lower mw hydrocarbons, consistent with removal by OH as the primary loss process

    The Nucleon ``Tensor Charges'' and the Skyrme Model

    The lowest moment of the twist-two, chiral-odd parton distribution h1(x)h_1(x) of the nucleon can be related to the so-called ``tensor charges'' of the nucleon. We consider the tensor charges in the Skyrme model, and find that in the large-NcN_c, SU(3)-symmetric limit, the model predicts that the octet isosinglet tensor charge, gT8g^8_T, is of order 1/Nc1/N_c with respect to the octet isovector tensor charge, gT3g^3_T. The predicted F/DF/D ratio is then 1/3, in the large-NcN_c limit. These predictions coincide with the Skyrme model predictions for the octet axial{\it axial} charges, gA8g^8_A and gA3g^3_A. (The prediction F/D=1/3F/D=1/3 for the axial charges differs from the commonly quoted prediction of 5/9, which is based on an inconsistent treatment of the large-NcN_c limit.) The model also predicts that the singlet tensor charge, gT0g^0_T, is of order 1/Nc1/N_c with respect to gT3g^3_T.Comment: 9 single-spaced pages, no figures, MIT-CTP-212

    A selected, annotated bibliography of literature citations related to the design and evaluation of STI systems is presented. The use of manual and machine-readable literature searches; the review of numerous books, periodicals reports, and papers; and the selection and annotation of literature citations were required. The bibliography was produced because the information was needed to develop the methodology for the review and evaluation project, and a survey of the literature did not reveal the existence of a single published source of information pertinent to the subject. Approximately 200 citations are classified in four subject areas. The areas include information - general; information systems - design and evaluation, including information products and services; information - use and need; and information - economics

    CMB Likelihood Functions for Beginners and Experts

    Although the broad outlines of the appropriate pipeline for cosmological likelihood analysis with CMB data has been known for several years, only recently have we had to contend with the full, large-scale, computationally challenging problem involving both highly-correlated noise and extremely large datasets (N>1000N > 1000). In this talk we concentrate on the beginning and end of this process. First, we discuss estimating the noise covariance from the data itself in a rigorous and unbiased way; this is essentially an iterated minimum-variance mapmaking approach. We also discuss the unbiased determination of cosmological parameters from estimates of the power spectrum or experimental bandpowers.Comment: Long-delayed submission.     A Thin HI Circumnuclear Disk in NGC4261

    We report on high sensitivity, spectral line VLBI observations of the HI absorption feature in the radio galaxy NGC4261. Although absorption is only detectable on the most sensitive baseline, it can be unambiguously associated with the counterjet and is interpreted to originate in a thin atomic circumnuclear disk. This structure is probably a continuation of the dusty accretion disk inferred from HST imaging, which could be feeding the massive black hole. HI column densities in front of the counterjet of the order of 10^{21}(T_sp/100 K) cm^{-2} are derived, consistent with X-ray data and VLBI scale free-free absorption.
