    Testing for Non-Nested Conditional Moment Restrictions Using Unconditional Empirical Likelihood

    We propose non-nested hypotheses tests for conditional moment restriction models based on the method of generalized empirical likelihood (GEL). By utilizing the implied GEL probabilities from a sequence of unconditional moment restrictions that contains equivalent information of the conditional moment restrictions, we construct Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramer-von Mises type moment encompassing tests. Advantages of our tests over Otsu and Whang's (2007) tests are: (i) they are free from smoothing parameters, (ii) they can be applied to weakly dependent data, and (iii) they allow non-smooth moment functions. We derive the null distributions, validity of a bootstrap procedure, and local and global power properties of our tests.     One-dimensional broadband phononic crystal filter with unit cells made of two non-uniform impedance-mirrored elements

    A one-dimensional finite-sized phononic crystal(PC) made of a specially-configured unit cell is proposed to realize broad bandpass, high-performance filtering. The unit cell is specially-configured with two elements having mirrored impedance distributions of each other. One element has a non-uniform impedance distribution that is so engineered as to maximize wave transmission in the pass band and to minimize transmission in the adjacent stop band while the other, exactly the mirrored distribution. The mirroring approach naturally yields the overall impedance contrast within the resulting unit cell, necessary to form stop bands in a PC of the unit cells. More importantly, the good transmission performance of the orginally-engineered element can be preserved by the approach because no additional impedance mismatch is introduced along the interface of the two impedance-mirrored elements. Extraordinary performance of the PC filter made of the proposed unit cell, such as high transmission, large bandwidth and sharp roll-off, is demonstrated by using one-dimensional longitudinal elastic wave problems.     Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Prevalence and Causative Factors of Extrahepatic Collateral Arteries in 479 Patients

    OBJECTIVE: We wanted to investigate the prevalence and causative factors of extrahepatic arterial blood supply to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at its initial presentation and during chemoembolization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February 1998 and April 2000, consecutive 479 patients with newly diagnosed HCC were prospectively enrolled into this study. A total of 1629 sessions of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) were performed in these patients (range: 1-15 sessions; mean: 3.4 sessions) until April 2004. For each TACE procedure, we determined the potential extrahepatic collateral arteries (ExCAs) depending on the location of the tumor, and we performed selective angiography of all suspected collaterals that could supply the tumor. The prevalence of ExCAs and the causative factors were analyzed. RESULTS: At initial presentation, 82 (17%) of these 479 patients showed 108 ExCAs supplying tumors. Univariate analysis showed that tumor size (p or =5 cm) was significantly higher than that for those patients with a small tumor (< 5 cm) (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The presence of ExCAs supplying HCC is rather common, and the tumor size is a significant causative factor for the development of these collateral arteries.This study was supported by a grant (0620220-1) from the National R & D Program for Cancer Control, Ministry of Health & Welfare, Republic of Korea

    Mean flow characteristics of two-dimensional wings in ground effect

    ABSTRACTThe present study numerically investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of two-dimensional wings in the vicinity of the ground by solving two-dimensional steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the turbulence closure model of the realizable k-Ξ΅ model. Numerical simulations are performed at a wide range of the normalized ground clearance by the chord length (0.1≀h/C ≀ 1.25) for the angles of attack (0Β° ≀ Ξ± ≀ 10Β°) in the pre-stall regime at a Reynolds number (Re) of 2Γ—106 based on free stream velocity U∞ and the chord length. As the physical model of this study, a cambered airfoil of NACA 4406 has been selected by a performance test for various airfoils. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio is achieved at Ξ± = 4Β° and h/C = 0.1. Under the conditions of Ξ± = 4Β° and h/C = 0.1, the effect of the Reynolds number on the aerodynamic characteristics of NACA 4406 is investigated in the range of 2Γ— 10 5 ≀ Re ≀ 2Γ— 109. As Re increases, Cl and Cd augments and decreases, respectively, and the lift-to-drag ratio increases linearly

    Zero-frequency Bragg gap by spin-harnessed metamaterial

    The Bragg gap that stops wave propagation may not be formed from zero or a very low frequency unless the periodicity of a periodic system is unrealistically large. Accordingly, the Bragg gap has been considered to be inappropriate for low frequency applications despite its broad bandwidth. Here, we report a new mechanism that allows formation of the Bragg gap starting from a nearly zero frequency. The mechanism is based on the finding that if additional spin motion is coupled with the longitudinal motion of a mass of a diatomic mechanical periodic system, the Bragg gap starting from a nearly zero frequency can be formed. The theoretical analysis shows that the effective mass and stiffness at the band gap frequencies are all positive, confirming that the formed stop band is a Bragg gap. The periodic system is realized by a spin-harnessed metamaterial which incorporates unique linkage mechanisms. The numerical and experimental validation confirmed the formation of the low-frequency Bragg gap. The zero-frequency Bragg gap is expected to open a new way to control hard-to-shield low-frequency vibration and noise

    Electrostatic chucks (ESCs) are major components of the equipment used to improve the production yield of wafers and temperature uniformity across wafer surfaces by controlling the wafer temperature precisely. However, ESCs are directly exposed to harsh environments, such as plasma, chemical gases, and high temperature fluctuations. Therefore, ESCs may malfunction if used for a certain period. Therefore, repair and performance verification of failed ESCs are required. In this study, we developed a multizone probe card system suitable for electrical testing of the heating electrodes embedded in ESC control modules to correlate the failure mode factors of ESCs. This system has the advantages of examining the resistance of the internal heating electrode of a 144-zone ESC in a short time and detecting an abnormality in this component based on the measured data. The heating electrode resistance measurement error rate of the developed system was 1%, and the maintenance time was reduced by approximately 66% compared with that of existing ESC maintenance methods

    CT Findings of Completely Regressed Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Main Portal Vein Tumor Thrombosis after Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization

    Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the sequential CT findings of controlled hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with main portal vein (MPV) thrombosis with the use of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization and additional intra-arterial cisplatin infusion. Materials and Methods: From January 2004 to September 2006, 138 patients with HCC invading MPV were referred to the angiography unit of our institution for chemoembolization and additional intra-arterial cisplatin infusion. Until August 2008, seven (5%) of 138 patients were followed-up and found not to have tumor recurrence. CT scans were retrospectively reviewed by two radiologists, focusing on the following parameters: the extent of portal vein thrombosis, the diameter of the affected portal vein, and enhancement of portal vein thrombosis. Results: The extent of portal vein thrombosis at the initial presentation was variable: left portal vein (LPV) and MPV (n = 1), right portal vein (RPV) and MPV (n = 3), as well as RPV, LPV and MPV (n = 3). The extent and diameter of the affected portal vein decreased during follow-up examinations. In addition, the degree of enhancement for tumor thrombi and serum alpha-feto-protein levels decreased after the transcatheter arterial chemoembolization. Portal vein thrombosis was found to be completely resolved in one patient, whereas residual thrombus without viability was persistent in six patients.     Anti-inflammatory activity of cinnamon water extract in vivo and in vitro LPS-induced models

    BACKGROUND: Cinnamon bark is one of the most popular herbal ingredients in traditional oriental medicine and possesses diverse pharmacological activities including anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-cancer properties. The goal of this study is to investigate the in vivo and in vitro inhibitory effect of cinnamon water extract (CWE) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-Ξ± and its underlying intracellular mechanisms. METHODS: CWE was orally administrated to mice for 6 days prior to intraperitoneal injection of LPS. Serum levels of TNF-Ξ± and interleukin (IL)-6 were determined 1 hour after LPS stimulation. Peritoneal macrophages from thioglycollate-injected mice were isolated and assayed for viability, cytokine expression and signaling molecules upon LPS stimulation. CWE was further fractioned according to molecular size, and the levels of total polyphenols and biological activities of each fraction were measured. RESULTS: The oral administration of CWE to mice significantly decreased the serum levels of TNF-Ξ± and IL-6. CWE treatment in vitro decreased the mRNA expression of TNF-Ξ±. CWE blocked the LPS-induced degradation of IΞΊBΞ± as well as the activation of JNK, p38 and ERK1/2. Furthermore, size-based fractionation of CWE showed that the observed inhibitory effect of CWE in vitro occurred in the fraction containing the highest level of total polyphenols. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with CWE decreased LPS-induced TNF-Ξ± in serum. In vitro inhibition of TNF-Ξ± gene by CWE may occur via the modulation of IΞΊBΞ± degradation and JNK, p38, and ERK1/2 activation. Our results also indicate that the observed anti-inflammatory action of CWE may originate from the presence of polyphenols

    Correlation of hypoxia inducible transcription factor in breast cancer and SUVmax of F-18 FDG PET/CT

    BACKGROUND: Tumor hypoxia induces the expression of several genes via the hypoxia-inducible transcription factor-1 alpha (HIF-1a). It is associated with the prognosis of several cancers. We studied the immunohistochemical expression of HIF-1a in patients with invasive ductal cancer (IDC) of the breast and the possible correlation with the maximum standardized uptake value of the primary tumor (pSUVmax) as well as other biological parameters. Prognostic significance of pSUVmax and expression of HIF-1a for the prediction of progression-free survival (PFS) was also assessed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two-hundred seven female patients with IDC who underwent pretreatment fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-18 FDG PET/CT) were enrolled. The pSUVmax was compared with clinicopathological parameters including estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), axillary lymph node (LN) metastasis, stage and HIF-1a expression. The prognostic value of pSUVmax for PFS was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: pSUVmax was significantly higher in patients with HIF-1a expression β‰₯ 2 compared to patients with HIF-1a expression &lt; 2 (5.2 Β± 4.5 vs. 3.7 Β± 3.1, p = 0.008). pSUVmax was also significantly higher in higher stage (p &lt; 0.000001), ER-negative tumors (p &lt; 0.0001), PR-negative tumors (p = 0.0011) and positive LN metastasis (p = 0.0013). pSUVmax was significantly higher in patients with progression compared to patients who were disease-free (6.8 Β± 4.4 vs. 4.1 Β± 3.7, p = 0.0005). A receiver-operating characteristic curve demonstrated a pSUVmax of 6.51 to be the optimal cutoff for predicting PFS (sensitivity: 53.6%, specificity: 86.0%). Patients with high pSUVmax (&gt; 6.5) had significantly shorter PFS compared to patients with low pSUVmax (p &lt; 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: pSUVmax on pretreatment F-18 FDG PET/ CT reflect expression of HIF-1a and can be used as a good surrogate marker for the prediction of progression in patients with IDC.     Titanium dioxide induces apoptotic cell death through reactive oxygen species-mediated Fas upregulation and Bax activation

    Background: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been widely used in many areas, including biomedicine, cosmetics, and environmental engineering. Recently, it has become evident that some TiO2 particles have a considerable cytotoxic effect in normal human cells. However, the molecular basis for the cytotoxicity of TiO2 has yet to be defined.Methods and results: In this study, we demonstrated that combined treatment with TiO2 nanoparticles sized less than 100 nm and ultraviolet A irradiation induces apoptotic cell death through reactive oxygen species-dependent upregulation of Fas and conformational activation of Bax in normal human cells. Treatment with P25 TiO2 nanoparticles with a hydrodynamic size distribution centered around 70 nm (TiO2P25-70) together with ultraviolet A irradiation-induced caspase-dependent apoptotic cell death, accompanied by transcriptional upregulation of the death receptor, Fas, and conformational activation of Bax. In line with these results, knockdown of either Fas or Bax with specific siRNA significantly inhibited TiO2-induced apoptotic cell death. Moreover, inhibition of reactive oxygen species with an antioxidant, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, clearly suppressed upregulation of Fas, conformational activation of Bax, and subsequent apoptotic cell death in response to combination treatment using TiO2P25-70 and ultraviolet A irradiation.Conclusion: These results indicate that sub-100 nm sized TiO2 treatment under ultraviolet A irradiation induces apoptotic cell death through reactive oxygen species-mediated upregulation of the death receptor, Fas, and activation of the preapoptotic protein, Bax. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which nanosized particles induce activation of cell death signaling pathways would be critical for the development of prevention strategies to minimize the cytotoxicity of nanomaterials.This work was supported by the Korea Ministry of Environment and The Eco-Technopia 21 Project (091-091-081)
