Determination of the blood oxygenation in the brain by time-resolved reflectance spectroscopy: contribution of vascular absorption and tissue background absorption
The possibility of measuring the blood oxygenation in the brain with near infrared light has been studied. The goal of this study was to quantify the influence of different brain layers on brain blood oxygenation measurements. Experimental results obtained from time resolved reflectance measurements on layered tissue phantoms were compared to Monte Carlo simulations of layered models, diffusion theory, and in vivo measurements on the human head. Both the experimental results and simulations show that the absorption coefficient (mu) a, which is closely related to the blood oxygenation, of deeper layers can be accessed in the time domain. Thus fitting analytical expressions found from diffusion theory only to the late part of the time resolved reflectance allows us to determine (mu) a and subsequently the blood oxygenation of the deepest medium (e.g. brain tissue)
Predictors of measles vaccination coverage among children 6-59 months of age in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
BackgroundMeasles is a significant contributor to child mortality in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), despite routine immunization programs and supplementary immunization activities (SIA). Further, national immunization coverage levels may hide disparities among certain groups of children, making effective measles control even more challenging. This study describes measles vaccination coverage and reporting methods and identifies predictors of vaccination among children participating in the 2013-2014 DRC Demographic and Health Survey (DHS).MethodsWe examined vaccination coverage of 6947 children aged 6-59 months. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify predictors of vaccination among children reporting vaccination via dated card in order to identify least reached children. We also assessed spatial distribution of vaccination report type by rural versus urban residence.ResultsUrban children with educated mothers were more likely to be vaccinated (OR = 4.1, 95% CI: 1.6, 10.7) versus children of mothers with no education, as were children in wealthier rural families (OR = 2.9, 95% CI: 1.9, 4.4). At the provincial level, urban areas more frequently reported vaccination via dated card than rural areas.ConclusionsResults indicate that, while the overall coverage level of 70% is too low, socioeconomic and geographic disparities also exist which could make some children even less likely to be vaccinated. Dated records of measles vaccination must be increased, and groups of children with the greatest need should be targeted. As access to routine vaccination services is limited in DRC, identifying and targeting under-reached children should be a strategic means of increasing country-wide effective measles control
Magnetic properties of NaV2O5, a one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnet with finite chains
We have performed measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of NaVO
between 2 and 400 K. The high temperature part is typical of spin 1/2 chains
with a nearest--neighbour antiferromagnetic exchange integral of 529 K. We
develop a model for the susceptibility of a system with finite chains to
account for the low temperature part of the data, which cannot be fitted by a
standard Curie-Weiss term. These results suggest that the next
nearest--neighbour exchange integral in CaVO should be of the
order of 500 K because, like in NaVO, it corresponds to corner

Spiral inflow feeding the nuclear starburst in M83, observed in H-alpha emission with the GHAFAS Fabry-Perot interferometer
We present observations of the nearby barred starburst galaxy, M83 (NGC5236),
with the new Fabry-Perot interferometer GHAFAS mounted on the 4.2 meter William
Herschel Telescope on La Palma. The unprecedented high resolution observations,
of 16 pc/FWHM, of the H-alpha-emitting gas cover the central two kpc of the
galaxy. The velocity field displays the dominant disk rotation with signatures
of gas inflow from kpc scales down to the nuclear regions. At the inner Inner
Lindblad Resonance radius of the main bar and centerd at the dynamical center
of the main galaxy disk, a nuclear rapidly
rotating disk with scale length of pc has formed. The nuclear
starburst is found in the vicinity as well as inside this nuclear disk, and our
observations confirm that gas spirals in from the outer parts to feed the
nuclear starburst, giving rise to several star formation events at different

Corpuscular model of two-beam interference and double-slit experiments with single photons
We introduce an event-based corpuscular simulation model that reproduces the
wave mechanical results of single-photon double slit and two-beam interference
experiments and (of a one-to-one copy of an experimental realization) of a
single-photon interference experiment with a Fresnel biprism. The simulation
comprises models that capture the essential features of the apparatuses used in
the experiment, including the single-photon detectors recording individual
detector clicks. We demonstrate that incorporating in the detector model,
simple and minimalistic processes mimicking the memory and threshold behavior
of single-photon detectors is sufficient to produce multipath interference
patterns. These multipath interference patterns are built up by individual
particles taking one single path to the detector where they arrive one-by-one.
The particles in our model are not corpuscular in the standard, classical
physics sense in that they are information carriers that exchange information
with the apparatuses of the experimental set-up. The interference pattern is
the final, collective outcome of the information exchanges of many particles
with these apparatuses. The interference patterns are produced without making
reference to the solution of a wave equation and without introducing signalling
or non-local interactions between the particles or between different detection

Elastic instability in stratified core annular flow
We study experimentally the interfacial instability between a layer of dilute
polymer solution and water flowing in a thin capillary. The use of microfluidic
devices allows us to observe and quantify in great detail the features of the
flow. At low velocities, the flow takes the form of a straight jet, while at
high velocities, steady or advected wavy jets are produced. We demonstrate that
the transition between these flow regimes is purely elastic -- it is caused by
viscoelasticity of the polymer solution only. The linear stability analysis of
the flow in the short-wave approximation captures quantitatively the flow
diagram. Surprisingly, unstable flows are observed for strong velocities,
whereas convected flows are observed for low velocities. We demonstrate that
this instability can be used to measure rheological properties of dilute
polymer solutions that are difficult to assess otherwise.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Preliminary results of a paleoseismological analysis along the Sahel fault (Algeria): New evidence for historical seismic events
International audienceThe ∼60 km-long Sahel ridge west of Algiers (Tell Atlas, north Algeria) is considered as an ENE-WSW fault-propagation fold running along the Mediterranean coast and associated with a north-west dipping thrust. Its proximity with Algiers makes this structure a potential source of destructive earthquakes that could hit the capital city, as occurred in 1365 AD and 1716 AD. The first paleoseismologic investigation on the Sahel ridge was conducted in order to detect paleo-ruptures related to active faulting and to date them. From the first investigations in the area, a first trench was excavated across bending-moment normal faults induced by flexural slip folding in the hanging wall of the Sahel anticline thrust ramp. Paleoseismological analyses recognize eight rupture events affecting colluvial deposits. 14C dating indicates that these events are very young, six of them being younger than 778 AD. The first sedimentary record indicates two ruptures before 1211 AD, i.e. older than the first historical earthquake documented in the region. Three events have age ranges compatible with the 1365, 1673 and 1716 Algiers earthquakes, whereas three other ones depict very recent ages, i.e. younger than 1700 AD. Potential of these secondary extrados faults for determining paleoseismic events and thrust behaviour is discussed
Spontaneous Oscillations of Collective Molecular Motors
We analyze a simple stochastic model to describe motor molecules which
cooperate in large groups and present a physical mechanism which can lead to
oscillatory motion if the motors are elastically coupled to their environment.
Beyond a critical fuel concentration, the non-moving state of the system
becomes unstable with respect to a mode with angular frequency omega. We
present a perturbative description of the system near the instability and
demonstrate that oscillation frequencies are determined by the typical

Excitation of the 3.071mm Hyperfine Line in Li-Like 57-Fe in Astrophysical Plasmas
As noted first by Sunyaev & Churazov (1984), the 3.071 mm hyperfine line from
might be observable in astrophysical plasmas. We assess the
atomic processes which might contribute to the excitation of this line. We
determine the intensity of the hyperfine line from an isothermal, coronal
plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium and for a coronal plasma cooling
isobarically due to its own radiation. Comparisons of the hyperfine line to
other lines emitted by the same ion, Fe, are shown to be useful for
deriving the isotopic fraction of Fe. We calculate the ratios of the
hyperfine line to the 2s--2p EUV lines at 192 \AA and 255 \AA, and the 2s--3p
