Cross-border electricity interconnections for a well functioning EU Internal Electricity Market

This Comment looks at electricity interconnections in Europe. Historically, such interconnections have been mainly aimed at promoting energy security by allowing imports of power from neighbouring systems in an emergency. However, they are now taking on greater importance, both in relation to the goal of a single electricity market, and as a means of facilitating the integration of the significant amounts of renewable power planned across Europe.
