A Framework for Inclusive Teaching in STEM Disciplines
A wide body of literature exists recounting the ways in which inclusive teaching practices and principles benefit students and positively impact learning, student retention, and professional development across disciplines. However, STEM faculty do not readily accept the traditional approach of examining course content from multiple perspectives as relevant to their course content or useful in their teaching. In this chapter, we propose a Framework for Inclusive Teaching in STEM Disciplines that reflects the contexts of teaching in these disciplines, and extends James Banks’ Five Dimensions of Multicultural Education to the distinct needs of STEM faculty in their classes. We also discuss ways that faculty development professionals can successfully communicate with STEM faculty about inclusive teaching goals
Refrigeration Compressor Basics For The Oil And Gas Industries
TutorialThis tutorial discusses the design basics for refrigeration compressors, using the 2section Propane refrigeration configuration as an example. The benefits of incorporating a flash gas Economizer are discussed, as are the various methods of controlling the performance these machines, with the pros and cons for each method analyzed. The proper antisurge control design is developed and correct recycle line arrangements are presented. A case study of incorrect recycle line arrangements for a Single Mixed Refrigeration (SMR) Compressor, and the proposed modifications, is also presented
DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN OF ANTISURGE AND PERFORMANCE CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS
TutorialThe development and design of control systems for centrifugal and axial compressors is discussed and explanations given to bring together features of control systems on varying machine designs. Potential problems resulting from such differences will be addressed and resolutions offered

Reduce Image Processing Costs: Minimize Waste And Recover Silver
This fact sheet describes how printers can take actions that will help them to recover silver while generating less waste during image processing. These wastes typically include film, developer, fixer, and wash water, all of which require proper management and disposal. Film, fixer and to
some extent wash water, can contain silver, which is a regulated metal. These can also contain hydroquinone, though hydroquinone is not regulated under RCRA as a hazardous waste. This fact sheet describes how to manage these wastes in an environmentally sound manner, and
emphasizes the importance of recovering silver from both a business and environmental perspective.Ope
The Use of VTE prophylaxis in relatioN to patiEnt risk profiling (TUNE-IN) Wave 2 study
Background. The TUNE-IN (The Use of VTE prophylaxis in relatioN to patiEnt risk profiling) study evaluated venous thrombo-embolism (VTE) risk assessment and prophylaxis in private medical and surgical inpatients in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The study concluded that of the 608 patients enrolled, 54.1% were clinically evaluated to be at risk for VTE. A VTE risk assessment model (RAM), the Caprini score, increased the rate to 74.6%.Objectives. TUNE-IN Wave 2, an extension of TUNE-IN, was conducted on a national level including the public sector, focusing on surgical inpatients.Methods. The study was a national, prospective, non-interventional, multisite, epidemiological disease registry enrolling 453 surgical inpatients. The perceived clinical VTE risk, VTE risk score on Caprini RAM, VTE prophylaxis and clinical details were documented during a baseline visit. A bleeding risk score was provided.Results. Of the cohort, 269 patients (59.4%) were assessed to be at risk for VTE before applying the RAM. All patients (100%), however, were at risk on the RAM score. Early mobilisation and assessment of the VTE risk as low were the most frequent reasons for non-prescription of prophylaxis. Only 15 patients in the private and 2 in the public sector were assessed as having a bleeding risk. Chemoprophylaxis differed between the healthcare sectors, with low-molecular-weight heparin predominating in the private sector and unfractionated heparin being prescribed only in the public sector.Conclusion. VTE risk assessment and prophylaxis need to improve in both the public and the private sectors. A formal RAM will improve identification of patients at risk of VTE
Engagement, Satisfaction, and Belonging of International Undergraduates at U.S. Research Universities
International students face challenges that their U.S. classmates rarely encounter, but few studies examine specific ways in which undergraduate experiences of international students compare to those of their U.S. classmates. This study examines U.S. and international student responses to an undergraduate survey administered at nine U.S. research universities in order to identify similarities and differences in ways that these two groups perceive their experiences. Findings suggest that in many ways, experiences with faculty for the two groups are more similar than different. However international students consistently report lower levels of social satisfaction and feelings of being welcome and respected on campus, suggesting that interactions among students are a significant factor in international student sense of belonging at the university
