Analytic Treatment of Positronium Spin Splittings in Light-Front QED

We study the QED bound-state problem in a light-front hamiltonian approach. Starting with a bare cutoff QED Hamiltonian, HBH_{_{B}}, with matrix elements between free states of drastically different energies removed, we perform a similarity transformation that removes the matrix elements between free states with energy differences between the bare cutoff, Λ\Lambda, and effective cutoff, \lam (\lam < \Lam). This generates effective interactions in the renormalized Hamiltonian, HRH_{_{R}}. These effective interactions are derived to order α\alpha in this work, with α1\alpha \ll 1. HRH_{_{R}} is renormalized by requiring it to satisfy coupling coherence. A nonrelativistic limit of the theory is taken, and the resulting Hamiltonian is studied using bound-state perturbation theory (BSPT). The effective cutoff, \lam^2, is fixed, and the limit, 0 \longleftarrow m^2 \alpha^2\ll \lam^2 \ll m^2 \alpha \longrightarrow \infty, is taken. This upper bound on \lam^2 places the effects of low-energy (energy transfer below \lam) emission in the effective interactions in the ee>| e {\overline e} > sector. This lower bound on \lam^2 insures that the nonperturbative scale of interest is not removed by the similarity transformation. As an explicit example of the general formalism introduced, we show that the Hamiltonian renormalized to O(α)O(\alpha) reproduces the exact spectrum of spin splittings, with degeneracies dictated by rotational symmetry, for the ground state through O(α4)O(\alpha^4). The entire calculation is performed analytically, and gives the well known singlet-triplet ground state spin splitting of positronium, 7/6α2Ryd7/6 \alpha^2 Ryd. We discuss remaining corrections other than the spin splittings and how they can be treated in calculating the spectrum with higher precision.Comment: 46 pages, latex, 3 Postscript figures included, section on remaining corrections added, title changed, error in older version corrected, cutoff placed in a windo

Isolation of a wide range of minerals from a thermally treated plant: Equisetum arvense, a Mare’s tale

Silica is the second most abundant biomineral being exceeded in nature only by biogenic CaCO3. Many land plants (such as rice, cereals, cucumber, etc.) deposit silica in significant amounts to reinforce their tissues and as a systematic response to pathogen attack. One of the most ancient species of living vascular plants, Equisetum arvense is also able to take up and accumulate silica in all parts of the plant. Numerous methods have been developed for elimination of the organic material and/or metal ions present in plant material to isolate biogenic silica. However, depending on the chemical and/or physical treatment applied to branch or stem from Equisetum arvense; other mineral forms such glass-type materials (i.e. CaSiO3), salts (i.e. KCl) or luminescent materials can also be isolated from the plant material. In the current contribution, we show the chemical and/or thermal routes that lead to the formation of a number of different mineral types in addition to biogenic silica

A voice unknown: Undercurrents in Mussorgsky's 'Sunless'

Mussorgsky's Sunless cycle is aesthetically and stylistically an anomalous member of his oeuvre. Its notably effaced, pared-down, and withdrawn qualities present challenges to critical interpretation. Its uniqueness, however, renders it a crucial work for furnishing the fullest possible picture of Mussorgsky as a creative artist. The author of its texts, Golenishchev-Kutuzov (whose relationship with Mussorgsky at the time of its writing possibly extended beyond the platonic) has been identified by recent scholarship as an essential eye-witness for those to whom Stasov's populist characterization of the composer does not ring entirely true. Golenishchev-Kutuzov believed that in Sunless Mussorgsky first revealed his authentic artistic self. According to Golenishchev-Kutuvoz, Mussorgsky regarded his signal achievement in Sunless to have been the eradication of all elements other than feeling. In other words, he had thrown off the stylistic shackles imposed by the aesthetics of realism and relied entirely on intuitive harmonic invention as the sole conveyor of a purely subjective, affective meaning in the cycle. This hypothesis forms the point of departure for an investigation of select numbers of the cycle. Analysis reveals that the affective aspect is riot the only significant element operative. Alongside remnants of the realist style, there is evidence, of varying degrees of subtlety, for a knowing use of symmetrical pitch organization. Mussorgsky not only adapted the usual referential attachments of symmetrically based chromaticism-typically found in Russian operas of the second half of the nineteenth century-he also, through extremely simple but effective means, synthesized the intuitive harmonic and rational symmetrical elements of the cycle's pitch organization so that the latter emerges seamlessly out of the former. This remarkable synthesis ensures the cycle's uniformity of tone while also allowing for a reading that extends beyond the generally affective to the symbolically more specific. This symbolic level of reading offers several interpretative possibilities, one of which may refer even to the relationship of the poet and the composer. Irrespective of such potentials for interpretation, the most significant achievement in the cycle remains the synthesis of the intuitive/affective and rational/symbolic elements of its organization. Songs 1, 2, 3, and 6 of the cycle are considered in detail

What factors influence training opportunities for older workers? Three factorial surveys exploring the attitudes of HR professionals

    Get PDF
The core research questions addressed in this paper are: what factors influence HR professionals in deciding whether to approve training proposals for older workers? What kind of training are they more likely to recommend for older employees and in which organizational contexts? We administered three factorial surveys to 66 HR professionals in Italy. Participants made specific training decisions based on profiles of hypothetical older workers. Multilevel analyses indicated that access to training decreases strongly with age, while highly-skilled older employees with low absenteeism rates are more likely to enjoy training opportunities. In addition, older workers displaying positive performance are more likely to receive training than older workers who perform poorly, suggesting that training late in working life may serve as a reward for good performance rather than as a means of enhancing productivity. The older the HR professional evaluating training proposals, the higher the probability that older workers will be recommended for training. keywords: training; older workers; HR professionals; factorial survey; multilevel model

A Chiral Effective Lagrangian for Nuclei

An effective hadronic lagrangian consistent with the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics and intended for applications to finite-density systems is constructed. The degrees of freedom are (valence) nucleons, pions, and the low-lying non-Goldstone bosons, which account for the intermediate-range nucleon-nucleon interactions and conveniently describe the nonvanishing expectation values of nucleon bilinears. Chiral symmetry is realized nonlinearly, with a light scalar meson included as a chiral singlet to describe the mid-range nucleon-nucleon attraction. The low-energy electromagnetic structure of the nucleon is described within the theory using vector-meson dominance, so that external form factors are not needed. The effective lagrangian is expanded in powers of the fields and their derivatives, with the terms organized using Georgi's ``naive dimensional analysis''. Results are presented for finite nuclei and nuclear matter at one-baryon-loop order, using the single-nucleon structure determined within the model. Parameters obtained from fits to nuclear properties show that naive dimensional analysis is a useful principle and that a truncation of the effective lagrangian at the first few powers of the fields and their derivatives is justified.Comment: 43 pages, REVTeX 3.0 with epsf.sty, plus 12 figure

The pedagogy and principles of teaching therapeutic practice with children and young people.

Technical approaches suggesting that systematically produced, generalized, and scientific knowledge are the most solid foundations for practice present significant challenges for the social work profession, in which the decisions faced often are not technical but rather moral, requiring the application of ethically based and intuitive skills. Meanwhile, the command, control, and measurement of outcomes in social work practice also present significant conundrums for the delivery of relational person-centered social work and social care. With a focus too often on efficiency rather than on effectiveness, this managerialistic approach frequently fails to acknowledge the complexity inherent in the act of caring. In this context and framework, teaching therapeutic practice with children draws a balance between traditional systematic teaching methods and use of creative media including art, play, and music. This article outlines the positive contribution to professional social work practice that the teaching of therapeutic approaches to child care can make
