Obtaining Maxwell's equations heuristically
Starting from the experimental fact that a moving charge experiences the
Lorentz force and applying the fundamental principles of simplicity (first
order derivatives only) and linearity (superposition principle), we show that
the structure of the microscopic Maxwell equations for the electromagnetic
fields can be deduced heuristically by using the transformation properties of
the fields under space inversion and time reversal. Using the experimental
facts of charge conservation and that electromagnetic waves propagate with the
speed of light together with Galileo invariance of the Lorentz force allows us
to introduce arbitrary electrodynamic units naturally.Comment: 11 page
Variability in supply and cross-shelf transport of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus duorarum) postlarvae into western Florida Bay
The variability in the supply of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus duorarum) postlarvae and the transport mechanisms of planktonic stages were investigated with field data and simulations of transport. Postlarvae entering the nursery grounds of Florida Bay were collected for three consecutive years at channels that connect the Bay with the Gulf of Mexico, and in channels of the Middle Florida Keys that connect the southeastern margin of the Bay with the Atlantic Ocean. The influx of postlarvae in the Middle Florida Keys was low in magnitude and varied seasonally and among years. In contrast, the greater postlarval influx occurred at the northwestern border of the Bay, where there was a strong seasonal pattern with peaks in influx from July through September each year. Planktonic stages need to travel up to 150 km eastward between spawning grounds (northeast of Dry Tortugas) and nursery grounds (western Florida Bay) in about 30 days, the estimated time of planktonic development for this species. A Lagrangian trajectory model was developed to estimate the drift of planktonic stages across the SW Florida shelf. The model simulated the maximal distance traveled by planktonic stages under various assumptions of behavior. Simulation
results indicated that larvae traveling with the instantaneous current and exhibiting a diel behavior travel up to 65 km and 75% of the larvae travel only 30 km. However, the eastward distance traveled increased substantially when a larval response to tides was added to the behavioral variable (distance increased to 200 km and 85% of larvae traveled 150 km). The question is, when during larval development, and where on the shallow SW Florida shelf, does the tidal response become incorporated into the behavior of pink shrimp
Seasonal availability and distribution of benthic fishes of Chesapeake Bight
In considering the potential for expanding the Middle Atlantic fishery, Virginia Institute of Marine Science estimated the seasonal distribution and availability of benthic fishes on the 15,000 square miles of continental shelf between Cape Hatteras and Cape May. The survey, which started in the winter of 1966 and continued through the winter of 1968, was conducted in two phases. The ·work in 1966 ·was devoted to determining the seasonal distribution of the various kinds of fishes, especially those which appeared to be under-utilized. For.this work a 45-foot semi-balloon shrimp trawl was employed to make 295 tows which were divided among the four seasons. In the second phase, conducted in 1967 and 1968, the objcctive·was to estimate the quantity of fish potentially available to trawlers, should a market be developed
The optical conductivity of graphene in the visible region of the spectrum
We compute the optical conductivity of graphene beyond the usual Dirac cone
approximation, giving results that are valid in the visible region of the
conductivity spectrum. The effect of next nearest neighbor hoping is also
discussed. Using the full expression for the optical conductivity, the
transmission and reflection coefficients are given. We find that even in the
optical regime the corrections to the Dirac cone approximation are surprisingly
small (a few percent). Our results help in the interpretation of the
experimental results reported by Nair {\it et al.} [Science {\bf 320}, 1308

Quantum Opacity, the RHIC HBT Puzzle, and the Chiral Phase Transition
We present a relativistic quantum mechanical treatment of opacity and
refractive effects that allows reproduction of observables measured in two-pion
(HBT) interferometry and pion spectra at RHIC. The inferred emission duration
is substantial. The results are consistent with the emission of pions from a

Genomic comparison of diverse Salmonella serovars isolated from swine.
Food animals act as a reservoir for many foodborne pathogens. Salmonella enterica is one of the leading pathogens that cause food borne illness in a broad host range including animals and humans. They can also be associated with a single host species or a subset of hosts, due to genetic factors associated with colonization and infection. Adult swine are often asymptomatic carriers of a broad range of Salmonella servoars and can act as an important reservoir of infections for humans. In order to understand the genetic variations among different Salmonella serovars, Whole Genome Sequences (WGS) of fourteen Salmonella serovars from swine products were analyzed. More than 75% of the genes were part of the core genome in each isolate and the higher fraction of gene assign to different functional categories in dispensable genes indicated that these genes acquired for better adaptability and diversity. High concordance (97%) was detected between phenotypically confirmed antibiotic resistances and identified antibiotic resistance genes from WGS. The resistance determinants were mainly located on mobile genetic elements (MGE) on plasmids or integrated into the chromosome. Most of known and putative virulence genes were part of the core genome, but a small fraction were detected on MGE. Predicted integrated phage were highly diverse and many harbored virulence, metal resistance, or antibiotic resistance genes. CRISPR (Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) patterns revealed the common ancestry or infection history among Salmonella serovars. Overall genomic analysis revealed a great deal of diversity among Salmonella serovars due to acquired genes that enable them to thrive and survive during infection
Cooling of cryogenic electron bilayers via the Coulomb interaction
Heat dissipation in current-carrying cryogenic nanostructures is problematic
because the phonon density of states decreases strongly as energy decreases. We
show that the Coulomb interaction can prove a valuable resource for carrier
cooling via coupling to a nearby, cold electron reservoir. Specifically, we
consider the geometry of an electron bilayer in a silicon-based
heterostructure, and analyze the power transfer. We show that across a range of
temperatures, separations, and sheet densities, the electron-electron
interaction dominates the phonon heat-dissipation modes as the main cooling
mechanism. Coulomb cooling is most effective at low densities, when phonon
cooling is least effective in silicon, making it especially relevant for
experiments attempting to perform coherent manipulations of single spins.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
