The use of soil analysis in the interpretation of an early historic landscape at Puxton in Somerset

Journal home page http://www.landscapestudies.com/index_files/Volumes.htmSoil samples taken from two adjoining fields close to the village of Puxton in the county of North Somerset, UK, were analysed in 1997 for heavy metals, phosphorus, magnetic susceptibility and loss on ignition as part of an archaeological investigation of the origins and development of a medieval settlement. It had been argued that an oval-shaped field next to the church was the nucleus of marshland reclamation during the early medieval period, though it was unclear whether the enclosure was occupied by a settlement or was simply an area of embanked agricultural land. Soil chemistry shows certain elements, including phosphorus and the heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, etc), to be concentrated in a restricted part of the enclosure, which earthwork, resistivity and fieldwalking surveys suggest correlates with an area of human occupation associated with the dumping of midden material (a hypothesis confirmed through excavation). This paper demonstrates the value of multifaceted soil chemistry, alongside a range of other survey methods, for characterizing the nature of human activity on archaeological sites, and in the future may be used to locate previously unrecorded sites in more speculative landscape surveys
The effect of thrice-weekly ingestion of urea on wool production by grazing sheep.
Two trials of the effect of urea on wool production of Merino sheep were conducted in north-western Queensland. The urea was incorporated in compressed rations containing ground wheat and molasses, or ground wheat, bloodmeal and molasses, or was given as a mixture with molasses. These supplements were given thrice-weekly and, depending on the one used, the amount of urea offered on each occasion ranged from 25g. to 45g. In general, the urea-containing rations were not palatable. Each of the urea supplements in the amount given was toxic. The feeding of urea did not lead to increased wool production

Gamma Ray Lines from a Universal Extra Dimension
Indirect Dark Matter searches are based on the observation of secondary
particles produced by the annihilation or decay of Dark Matter. Among them,
gamma-rays are perhaps the most promising messengers, as they do not suffer
deflection or absorption on Galactic scales, so their observation would
directly reveal the position and the energy spectrum of the emitting source.
Here, we study the detailed gamma-ray energy spectrum of Kaluza--Klein Dark
Matter in a theory with 5 Universal Extra Dimensions. We focus in particular on
the two body annihilation of Dark Matter particles into a photon and another
particle, which produces monochromatic photons, resulting in a line in the
energy spectrum of gamma rays. Previous calculations in the context of the five
dimensional UED model have computed the line signal from annihilations into
\gamma \gamma, but we extend these results to include \gamma Z and \gamma H
final states. We find that these spectral lines are subdominant compared to the
predicted \gamma \gamma signal, but they would be important as follow-up
signals in the event of the observation of the \gamma \gamma line, in order to
distinguish the 5d UED model from other theoretical scenarios.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure
Composite vertices that lead to soft form factors
The momentum-space cut-off parameter of hadronic vertex functions
is studied in this paper. We use a composite model where we can measure the
contributions of intermediate particle propagations to . We show that
in many cases a composite vertex function has a much smaller cut-off than its
constituent vertices, particularly when light constituents such as pions are
present in the intermediate state. This suggests that composite
meson-baryon-baryon vertex functions are rather soft, i.e., they have \Lambda
considerably less than 1 GeV. We discuss the origin of this softening of form
factors as well as the implications of our findings on the modeling of nuclear

The LOFAR ling baseline snapshot calibrator survey

An efficient means of locating calibrator sources for international LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) is developed and used to determine the average density of usable calibrator sources on the sky for subarcsecond observations at 140 MHz.\ud

Methods\ud
We used the multi-beaming capability of LOFAR to conduct a fast and computationally inexpensive survey with the full international LOFAR array. Sources were preselected on the basis of 325 MHz arcminute-scale flux density using existing catalogues. By observing 30 different sources in each of the 12 sets of pointings per hour, we were able to inspect 630 sources in two hours to determine if they possess a sufficiently bright compact component to be usable as LOFAR delay calibrators.\ud

More than 40% of the observed sources are detected on multiple baselines between international stations and 86 are classified as satisfactory calibrators. We show that a flat low-frequency spectrum (from 74 to 325 MHz) is the best predictor of compactness at 140 MHz. We extrapolate from our sample to show that the sky density of calibrators that are sufficiently bright to calibrate dispersive and non-dispersive delays for the international LOFAR using existing methods is 1.0 per square degree.\ud

The observed density of satisfactory delay calibrator sources means that observations with international LOFAR should be possible at virtually any point in the sky provided that a fast and efficient search, using the methodology described here, is conducted prior to the observation to identify the best calibrator
Dietary studies in birds: testing a non-invasive method using digital photography in seabirds

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Dietary studies give vital insights into foraging behaviour, with implications for understanding changing environmental conditions and the anthropogenic impacts on natural resources. Traditional diet sampling methods may be invasive or subject to biases, so developing non-invasive and unbiased methods applicable to a diversity of species is essential.
We used digital photography to investigate the diet fed to chicks of a prey-carrying seabird and compared our approach (photo-sampling) to a traditional method (regurgitations) for the greater crested tern Thalasseus bergii.
Over three breeding seasons, we identified >24 000 prey items of at least 48 different species, more than doubling the known diversity of prey taken by this population of terns. We present a method to estimate the length of the main prey species (anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus) from photographs, with an accuracy <1 mm and precision ~ 0·5 mm. Compared to regurgitations at two colonies, photo-sampling produced similar estimates of prey composition and size, at a faster species accumulation rate. The prey compositions collected by two researchers photo-sampling concurrently were also similar.
Photo-sampling offers a non-invasive tool to accurately and efficiently investigate the diet composition and prey size of prey-carrying birds. It reduces biases associated with observer-based studies and is simple to use. Probabilistic forecasts of storm sudden commencements from interplanetary shocks using machine learning
In this study we investigate the ability of several different machine learning models to provide probabilistic predictions as to whether interplanetary shocks observed upstream of the Earth at L1 will lead to immediate (Sudden Commencements, SCs) or longer lasting magnetospheric activity (Storm Sudden Commencements, SSCs).
Four models are tested including linear (Logistic Regression), nonâlinear (Naive Bayes and Gaussian Process) and ensemble (Random Forest) models, and are shown to provide skillful and reliable forecasts of SCs with Brier Skill Scores (BSSs) of ~ 0:3 and ROC scores > 0:8. The most powerful predictive parameter is found to be the range in the interplanetary magnetic field. The models also produce skillful forecasts of SSCs, though with less reliability than was found for SCs. The BSSs and ROC scores returned are ~0:21 and 0.82 respectively. The most important parameter for these predictions was found to be the minimum observed BZ.
The simple parameterization of the shock was tested by including additional features related to magnetospheric indices and their changes during shock impact, resulting in moderate increases in reliability. Several parameters, such as velocity and density, may be able to be more accurately predicted at a longer lead time, e.g. from heliospheric imagery. When the input was limited to the velocity and density the models were found to perform well at forecasting SSCs, though with lower reliability than previously (BSSs ~ 0:16, ROC Scores ~ 0:8), Finally, the models were tested with hypothetical extreme data beyond current observations, showing dramatically different extrapolations
A Nonlinear Force-Free Magnetic Field Approximation Suitable for Fast Forward-Fitting to Coronal Loops. I. Theory
We derive an analytical approximation of nonlinear force-free magnetic field
solutions (NLFFF) that can efficiently be used for fast forward-fitting to
solar magnetic data, constrained either by observed line-of-sight magnetograms
and stereoscopically triangulated coronal loops, or by 3D vector-magnetograph
data. The derived NLFFF solutions provide the magnetic field components
, , , the force-free parameter
, the electric current density , and are
accurate to second-order (of the nonlinear force-free -parameter). The
explicit expressions of a force-free field can easily be applied to modeling or
