Cervical cancer control research in Vietnamese American communities.
Census data show that the U.S. Vietnamese population now exceeds 1,250,000. Cervical cancer among Vietnamese American women has been identified as an important health disparity. Available data indicate the cervical cancer disparity may be due to low Papanicolaou (Pap) testing rates rather than variations in human papillomavirus infection rates and/or types. The cervical cancer incidence rates among Vietnamese and non-Latina White women in California during 2000 to 2002 were 14.0 and 7.3 per 100,000, respectively. Only 70% of Vietnamese women who participated in the 2003 California Health Interview Survey reported a recent Pap smear compared with 84% of non-Latina White women. Higher levels of cervical cancer screening participation among Vietnamese women are strongly associated with current/previous marriage, having a usual source of care/doctor, and previous physician recommendation. Vietnamese language media campaigns and lay health worker intervention programs have been effective in increasing Pap smear use in Vietnamese American communities. Cervical cancer control programs for Vietnamese women should address knowledge deficits, enable women who are without a usual source of care to find a primary care doctor, and improve patient-provider communication by encouraging health-care providers to recommend Pap testing as well as by empowering women to ask for testing
Hospital food service: a comparative analysis of systems and introducing the ‘Steamplicity’ concept
Background Patient meals are an integral part of treatment hence the provision and consumption of a balanced diet, essential to aid recovery. A number of food service systems are used to provide meals and the Steamplicity concept has recently been introduced. This seeks, through the application of a static, extended choice menu, revised patient ordering procedures, new cooking processes and individual patient food heated/cooked at ward level, to address some of the current hospital food service concerns. The aim of this small-scale study, therefore, was to compare a cook-chill food service operation against Steamplicity. Specifically, the goals were to measure food intake and wastage at ward level; ‘stakeholders’ (i.e. patients, staff, etc.) satisfaction with both systems; and patients’ acceptability of the food provided.
Method The study used both quantitative (self-completed patient questionnaires, n = 52) and qualitative methods (semi-structured interviews, n = 16) with appropriate stakeholders including medical and food service staff, patients and their visitors.
Results Patients preferred the Steamplicity system overall and in particular in terms of food choice, ordering, delivery and food quality. Wastage was considerably less with the Steamplicity system, although care must be taken to ensure that poor operating procedures do not negate this advantage. When the total weight of food consumed in the ward at each meal is divided by the number of main courses served, at lunch, the mean intake with the cook-chill system was 202 g whilst that for the Steamplicity system was 282 g and for the evening meal, 226 g compared with 310 g.
Conclusions The results of this small study suggest that Steamplicity is more acceptable to patients and encourages the consumption of larger portions. Further evaluation of the Steamplicity system is warranted.

Factors associated with hepatitis B testing among cambodian american men and women.
Cambodian Americans have an elevated risk of liver cancer. This health disparity is attributable to high rates of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Our study examined factors associated with HBV testing among Cambodian men and women. A population-based survey was conducted in the Seattle area. The Health Behavior Framework guided our survey instrument development. We attempted to interview a man and a woman in each household. The sample included 300 men and 367 women. About one-half of the male (45%) and female (54%) respondents had been tested for HBV. Two factors were independently associated with testing among men and women: a doctor had recommended testing and had asked a doctor for testing. Knowing that someone who looks and feels healthy can spread HBV was independently associated with testing among men. Low levels of HBV testing remain a public health problem among Cambodians. Interventions should improve patient-provider communication by encouraging providers who serve Cambodians to recommend HBV testing, as well as by empowering Cambodians to ask for testing
AMI-LA Observations of the SuperCLASS Super-cluster
We present a deep survey of the SuperCLASS super-cluster - a region of sky
known to contain five Abell clusters at redshift - performed using
the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) Large Array (LA) at 15.5GHz. Our
survey covers an area of approximately 0.9 square degrees. We achieve a nominal
sensitivity of Jy beam toward the field centre, finding 80
sources above a threshold. We derive the radio colour-colour
distribution for sources common to three surveys that cover the field and
identify three sources with strongly curved spectra - a high-frequency-peaked
source and two GHz-peaked-spectrum sources. The differential source count (i)
agrees well with previous deep radio source count, (ii) exhibits no evidence of
an emerging population of star-forming galaxies, down to a limit of 0.24mJy,
and (iii) disagrees with some models of the 15GHz source population.
However, our source count is in agreement with recent work that provides an
analytical correction to the source count from the SKADS Simulated Sky,
supporting the suggestion that this discrepancy is caused by an abundance of
flat-spectrum galaxy cores as-yet not included in source population models.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRA
A Sample of Intermediate-Mass Star-Forming Regions: Making Stars at Mass Column Densities <1 g/cm^2
In an effort to understand the factors that govern the transition from low-
to high-mass star formation, we identify for the first time a sample of
intermediate-mass star-forming regions (IM SFRs) where stars up to - but not
exceeding - 8 solar masses are being produced. We use IRAS colors and Spitzer
Space Telescope mid-IR images, in conjunction with millimeter continuum and CO
maps, to compile a sample of 50 IM SFRs in the inner Galaxy. These are likely
to be precursors to Herbig AeBe stars and their associated clusters of low-mass
stars. IM SFRs constitute embedded clusters at an early evolutionary stage akin
to compact HII regions, but they lack the massive ionizing central star(s). The
photodissociation regions that demarcate IM SFRs have typical diameters of ~1
pc and luminosities of ~10^4 solar luminosities, making them an order of
magnitude less luminous than (ultra)compact HII regions. IM SFRs coincide with
molecular clumps of mass ~10^3 solar masses which, in turn, lie within larger
molecular clouds spanning the lower end of the giant molecular cloud mass
range, 10^4-10^5 solar masses. The IR luminosity and associated molecular mass
of IM SFRs are correlated, consistent with the known luminosity-mass
relationship of compact HII regions. Peak mass column densities within IM SFRs
are ~0.1-0.5 g/cm^2, a factor of several lower than ultra-compact HII regions,
supporting the proposition that there is a threshold for massive star formation

The infrared dust bubble N22: an expanding HII region and the star formation around it
Aims. To increase the observational samples of star formation around
expanding Hii regions, we analyzed the interstellar medium and star formation
around N22.
Methods. We used data extracted from the seven large-scale surveys from
infrared to radio wavelengths. In addition we used the JCMT observations of the
J = 3-2 line of 12CO emission data released on CADC and the 12CO J = 2-1 and J
=3-2 lines observed by the KOSMA 3 m telescope. We performed a multiwavelength
study of bubble N22.
Results. A molecular shell composed of several clumps agrees very well with
the border of N22, suggesting that its expansion is collecting the surrounding
material. The high integrated 12CO line intensity ratio (ranging from 0.7 to
1.14) implies that shocks have driven into the molecular clouds. We identify
eleven possible O-type stars inside the Hii region, five of which are located
in projection inside the cavity of the 20 cm radio continuum emission and are
probably the exciting-star candidates of N22. Twenty-nine YSOs (young stellar
objects) are distributed close to the dense cores of N22. We conclude that star
formation is indeed active around N22; the formation of most of YSOs may have
been triggered by the expanding of the Hii region. After comparing the
dynamical age of N22 and the fragmentation time of the molecular shell, we
suggest that radiation-driven compression of pre-existing dense clumps may be

Initial phases of massive star formation in high infrared extinction clouds. I. Physical parameters
The earliest phases of massive star formation are found in cold and dense
infrared dark clouds (IRDCs). Since the detection method of IRDCs is very
sensitive to the local properties of the background emission, we present here
an alternative method to search for high column density in the Galactic plane
by using infrared extinction maps. We find clouds between 1 and 5 kpc, of which
many were missed by previous surveys. By studying the physical conditions of a
subsample of these clouds, we aim at a better understanding of the initial
conditions of massive star formation. We made extinction maps of the Galactic
plane based on the 3.6-4.5 microns color excess between the two shortest
wavelength Spitzer IRAC bands, reaching to visual extinctions of ~100 mag and
column densities of 9x10^22 cm^-2. From this we compiled a new sample of cold
and compact high extinction clouds. We used the MAMBO array at the IRAM 30m
telescope to study the morphology, masses and densities of the clouds and the
dense clumps within them. The latter were followed up by pointed ammonia
observations with the 100m Effelsberg telescope, to determine rotational
temperatures and kinematic distances. Extinction maps of the Galactic plane
trace large scale structures such as the spiral arms. The 1.2 mm emission maps
reveal that the high extinction clouds contain extended cold dust emission,
from filamentary structures to still diffuse clouds. Most of the clouds are
dark in 24 microns, but several show already signs of star formation via maser
emission or bright infrared sources, suggesting that the high extinction clouds
contain a variety of evolutionary stages. The observations suggest an
evolutionary scheme from dark, cold and diffuse clouds, to clouds with a
stronger 1.2 mm peak and to finally clouds with many strong 1.2 mm peaks, which

Sensitive Search for a Permanent Muon Electric Dipole Moment
We are proposing a new method to carry out a dedicated search for a permanent
electric dipole moment (EDM) of the muon with a sensitivity at a level of
10^{-24} e cm. The experimental design exploits the strong motional electric
field sensed by relativistic particles in a magnetic storage ring. As a key
feature, a novel technique has been invented in which the g-2 precession is
compensated with radial electric field. This technique will benefit greatly
when the intense muon sources advocated by the developers of the muon storage
