Civil organizations. More politics for less organisation: Aristotle´s social theory

    Get PDF
There is a lack in analysing Third Sector from a philosophical perspective. It is very complicated to answer many questions that are arising: Why men are concerned to the problems other men are involved in? Which is the driving force of the Social Sector? Why are NGOs legitimated to support social matters? What have NGOs to do in the XIX century? This questions need to be answered to fix correctly future strategy, mission and objectives. It is necessary to build an ethical-political frame to understand how Third Sector works. This paper studies the relationship between NGO and beneficiary, the changes happened in the XX century and the challenges NGO need to face in the forthcoming years.Non Profit Organisations, Third Sector, Ethics, Ethical-political focus, Relationship, Liberty

The why, when, and how of Corporate Social Responsibility

Reflecting on the question of who is the principal subject of social responsibility in the business sphere, Greenfield sets out a number of common assumptions among practitioners in the field and tries to dismantle them through a critical review of recent literature. Some of his reflections need to be nuanced from an ethical basis and elaborated upon from a practical point of view. Taking as our starting point Greenfield´s conclusion "there is no such thing as business ethics, only ethics of individual business men and women", this article aims to look in more depth at the consequences of regulating personal ethics and referring it to an institution.Business ethics, Corporate social responsibility, Strategy

The fate of non-trivial entanglement under gravitational collapse

    Get PDF
We analyse the evolution of the entanglement of a non-trivial initial quantum field state (which, for simplicity, has been taken to be a bipartite state made out of vacuum and the first excited state) when it undergoes a gravitational collapse. We carry out this analysis by generalising the tools developed to study entanglement behaviour in stationary scenarios and making them suitable to deal with dynamical spacetimes. We also discuss what kind of problems can be tackled using the formalism spelled out here as well as single out future avenues of research.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. v2: Added Journal reference and small changes to match published versio

(WP33/02 Clave pdf) The relations between the organizations and their employees are governed by a highly complex framework of motives and perceptions difficult to unravel. As a result of the daily practice of such relationship, there is a permanent exchange of individual efforts and incentives for the sake of satisfaction of organizational needs. The objective of the present work is to look into the essence of such exchanges and specifically to analyse the power of certain corporate policies, such as Social Responsibility ones, as incentives both for stimulating employee´s willingness to cooperate and for enriching his/her commitment with the company...Business alliances, Business ethics, Corporate social responsibility, Psychological contract, Social cause

An international perspective on the determinants of local government fragmentation

The main questions addressed in this paper are the identification of the main determinants of jurisdictional fragmentation as presently observed across countries and how well those findings line up with the predictions of the expanded standard model of optimal jurisdiction size. To our knowledge, to date, there does not exit a rigorous study analyzing the cross-country determinants of fragmentation in the way this issue has been previously analyzed for some particular countries. At the outset, country fixed effects can be expected to loom large and powerful. Each country with its own history conditioned by a myriad of details, including colonial legacies, geography or ethnic and linguistic fragmentation, are likely to have contributed to heterogeneous levels of fragmentation. These factors could all be summarized in what is often termed the long shadow or the “dead hand” of history. Indeed, some countries may still have the same vertical structure of government that they had many decades ago. But there are also many countries that have changed their governmental structures over the years. So in this paper we would like to find out what may the common determinants that have led to those changes, and also perhaps to help us better understand if those common determinants can also be used to explain why other countries have changed so little. The rest of this paper is organized as follows. In section 2 we offer a simple extension of the conventional model for optimal jurisdiction size. In section 3 we review the literature on government fragmentation and its impact. In section 4 we outline the empirical model proposed for the analysis of jurisdictional fragmentation. In section 5 we present the results from our estimations. We conclude in section 6
