Analytical studies of new airfoils for wind turbines

    Get PDF
Computer studies were conducted to analyze the potential gains associated with utilizing new airfoils for large wind turbine rotor blades. Attempts to include 3-dimensional stalling effects were inconclusive. It is recommended that blade pressure measurements be made to clarify the nature of blade stalling. It is also recommended that new laminar flow airfoils be used as rotor blade sections

An Analysis of Mathematics Interventions: Increased Time-on-Task Compared with Computer-Assisted Mathematics Instruction

Student achievement is not progressing on mathematics as measured by state, national, and international assessments. Much of the research points to mathematics curriculum and instruction as the root cause of student failure to achieve at levels comparable to other nations. Since mathematics is regarded as a gate keeper to many educational opportunities as well as, eventually, potential job prospects, critics are asking schools to fix the problem. This research project is a comparison of two different interventions used to improve student performance as tested on the Colorado State Assessment Program (CSAP). The first intervention, increased time-on-task, was used at Freedom High School for the school years 2004-2005 until 2008-2009. In those years, mathematics achievement did not improve and CSAP scores showed a negative trend. In the school year 2009-2010, Freedom High School used a computer-assisted instruction program as an intervention for low performing students. A matched-pair design was used to compare these two interventions to determine if the new intervention would improve student achievement. Eighth grade CSAP scale scores for both groups were used as a pre-test and ninth grade CSAP scale scores were used as a post-test. Pre-test mean scale scores were compared to determine variance between the groups. An analysis of covariance was used as a control for the mean differences. The statistical analysis showed that the computerassisted instructional program was ineffectual in improving student achievement in the sample group selected. Chapter Five offers discussion focused on the reasons why the computer-assisted instruction program did not work and possible solutions to correct the problems in the future. References are made to the fact that pedagogy must change if real achievement gains are going to be made by students

Feasibility study of aileron and spoiler control systems for large horizontal axis wind turbines

    Get PDF
The feasibility of using aileron or spoiler controls as alternates to pitch control for large horizontal axis wind turbines was studied. The NASA Mod-0 100 kw machine was used as the basis for the study. Specific performance studies were conducted for 20% chord ailerons over the outboard 30% span, and for 10% chord spoilers over the same portion of the span. Both control systems utilized control deflections up to 60 deg. Results of the study show that either ailerons or spoilers can provide the control necessary to limit turbine power in high wind conditions. The aileron system, as designed, provides overspeed protection at hurricane wind speeds, low wind speed starting torque of 778 N-m (574 ft. lb) at 3.6 m/sec, and a 1.3 to 1.5% increase in annual energy compared to a fixed pitch rotor. The aileron control system preliminary design study includes aileron loads analysis and the design of a failsafe flyweight actuator for overspeed protection in the event of a hydraulic system failure

Skills and Perceptions of Entry-Level Staff Supervision

    Get PDF
The following study consisted of 532 respondents to a survey related to the supervision of entrylevel staff in student affairs. Participants included both supervisors of entry-level staff and entrylevel staff themselves. Individuals shared their thoughts and experiences regarding the supervision of this population. Themes emerged in four areas: Readiness for the supervisory role, challenges related to supervision, supervisor skills, and working through transition. Implications and recommendations for practice and further research are discussed

    Calculator-aided microwave network analysis

The HP-8410S Microwave Network Analyzer System and the Wang 600 Programmable Calculating and Plotting System are discussed. An interface between the two is described and the feasibility of microwave network analysis under program control is demonstrated. Four calculator programs which implement S-parameter sampling and data reduction are described and documented.http://archive.org/details/calculatoraidedm00carlLieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Time Analyzer for Time Synchronization and Monitor of the Deep Space Network

    Get PDF
A software package has been developed to measure, monitor, and archive the performance of timing signals distributed in the NASA Deep Space Network. Timing signals are generated from a central master clock and distributed to over 100 users at distances up to 30 kilometers. The time offset due to internal distribution delays and time jitter with respect to the central master clock are critical for successful spacecraft navigation, radio science, and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) applications. The instrument controller and operator interface software is written in LabView and runs on the Linux operating system. The software controls a commercial multiplexer to switch 120 separate timing signals to measure offset and jitter with a time-interval counter referenced to the master clock. The offset of each channel is displayed in histogram form, and "out of specification" alarms are sent to a central complex monitor and control system. At any time, the measurement cycle of 120 signals can be interrupted for diagnostic tests on an individual channel. The instrument also routinely monitors and archives the long-term stability of all frequency standards or any other 1-pps source compared against the master clock. All data is stored and made available fo
