Three Newly Appointed Vice-Principals’ Perceptions of Their Identity Formation and Interaction With School Culture: A Qualitative Study of the VP Role Transition

    Get PDF
This generic qualitative study explored the process of administrative identity formation from the perspective of 3 newly appointed secondary school vice-principals. It also explored participants’ perception of how vice-principals influence and are influenced by school culture. Data were collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest that in their first years of transitioning into the role of vice-principal participants faced challenges in forming new identities. With respect to their ability to influence school culture, participants found that other responsibilities of the job consumed their time and subsequent abilities to make changes. Participants revealed their duties, responsibilities, and the ways in which they both prepared for their role and were supported within them. Participants found that their VP experiences upon appointment and within the first years of transitioning largely focused on the various challenges they faced in assuming the new responsibilities, navigating the changing dynamics amongst staff, and managing the vast quantity of work in limited time restraints. Despite these challenges participants continued to work towards finding a balance in their management of the VP role, where with time and experience they might further develop their administrative identity formation, and may impact school culture as a whole

Mycotoxins of Concern in Children and Infant Cereal Food at European Level: Incidence and Bioaccessibility

Cereals are of utmost importance for the nutrition of infants and children, as they provide important nutrients for their growth and development and, in addition, they are easily digestible, being the best choice for the transition from breast milk/infant formula to solid foods. It is well known that children are more susceptible than adults to toxic food contaminants, such as mycotoxins, common contaminants in cereals. Many mycotoxins are already regulated and controlled according to strict quality control standards in Europe and around the world. There are, however, some mycotoxins about which the level of knowledge is lower: the so-called emerging mycotoxins, which are not yet regulated. The current review summarizes the recent information (since 2014) published in the scientific literature on the amounts of mycotoxins in infants' and children's cereal-based food in Europe, as well as their behaviour during digestion (bioaccessibility). Additionally, analytical methods used for mycotoxin determination and in vitro methods used to evaluate bioaccessibility are also reported. Some studies demonstrated the co-occurrence of regulated and emerging mycotoxins in cereal products used in children's food, which highlights the need to adopt guidelines on the simultaneous presence of more than one mycotoxin. Although very little research has been done on the bioaccessibility of mycotoxins in these food products, very interesting results correlating the fiber and lipid contents of such products with a higher or lower bioaccessibility of mycotoxins were reported. LC-MS/MS is the method of choice for the detection and quantification of mycotoxins due to its high sensibility and accuracy. In vitro static digestion models are the preferred ones for bioaccessibility evaluation due to their simplicity and accuracy

The effective practitioner: The role and contribution of therapist effects in the delivery of psychological therapies.

Abstract Background: Variability in human performance is a naturally occurring phenomenon and applies to practitioners. Mainstream psychotherapy research has focused on treatments rather than practitioners and has viewed variability as error within the dominant paradigm of the randomised controlled trial. Aims: To investigate variability via the role of practitioner personal qualities and their association with differential patient outcomes, their contribution to effective practice, and the extent these qualities vary with patient severity. Method: A practice-based paradigm was adopted and sampled practitioners and data within a single Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service. The full sample comprised 42 practitioners – psychological wellbeing practitioners, counsellors, and cognitive-behaviour therapists – who completed measures of resilience, empathy, and mindfulness as well as provided qualitative accounts of their practice. A series of seven sequential studies utilised subsamples of the responses from these 42 practitioners, which were analysed prior to yoking with their patient outcome data to determine associations with more and less effective practice. Studies comprised mixed and integrated quantitative and qualitative analyses comparing benchmarking and multilevel modelling research methods (N=37) and thematic analysis (N=6). Results: Significant variability in practitioner effectiveness was found. Practitioners’ personal aspects were associated with patient outcomes and were influenced by their professional roles, level of treatment intensity provided, and their theoretical orientation. Practitioners’ mindfulness and combined resilience and mindfulness were associated with better patient outcomes and this role increased as patient severity increased. In contrast, empathy did not differ between more and less effective practitioners, with more effective practitioners showing marginally lower levels of empathy. Conclusion: Findings suggest that more effective practitioners do differ from less effective practitioners in the personal aspects they bring to their professional practice. Findings have implications for practitioner training and routine practice. The findings are limited in their generalisability and may only apply to IAPT services

Corn silage is one of the most important feed sources for ruminant production in the different regions of Brazil, including southern of Brazil, where they are mainly used in seasonal voids, moment of transition of forage availability, in the end of winter and summer seasons. The maize (Zea mays) became the main silage plant source, due it contains in this bromatological composition the most important requirements for its ensilage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bromatological quality of corn silages produced in the district of Capoer?, located at Erechim, state of Rio Grande do Sul, and was characterized as a case study, where the samples were collected in five different properties. After the samples were collected, the determinations of DM, MM, CP, EE, NDF and pH were carried out in Bromatology Laboratory at Federal University of Fronteira Sul (UFFS). In addition, thermographic reading of the silos was performed with a Thermographic Camera. The Dry Matter ranged from 38.81 to 31.74%. The CP content had high variability among the studied properties, being between 8.14 to 6.52%. It was concluded that, due to results of bromatological parameters, silages produced in the district of Capoer?, Erechim-RS, are in agreement with standards of good silage manufacturing.

Updatism, and broad present : a brief analysis of contemporary temporalities.

We discuss some symptomatologies of our present time that claim substantial differences between the historicist-modern time, usually located in the 19th century, and an emergent ?chronotope? or ?regime of historicity?. From the chapter ?Temporality and everydayness?, of Being and Time, we argue that certain aspects of this new ?chronotope? can be derived from Heidegger?s description of the temporality of ?openness?, particularly of what he calls the inauthentic temporalizing. Since for Heidegger these forms of experience are ontological, we have to consider the meaning of their irrelevance in the descriptions of the ?modern time? and its hypertrophy in the descriptions of the so-called novelty of our ?chronotope?. We use the word ?updatism? as an alternative to understanding our historical time
