Tunable cavity coupling of the zero phonon line of a nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond
We demonstrate the tunable enhancement of the zero phonon line of a single
nitrogen-vacancy color center in diamond at cryogenic temperature. An open
cavity fabricated using focused ion beam milling provides mode volumes as small
as 1.24 m. In-situ tuning of the cavity resonance is achieved with
piezoelectric actuators. At optimal coupling of the full open cavity the signal
from individual zero phonon line transitions is enhanced by about a factor of
10 and the overall emission rate of the NV center is increased by 40%
compared with that measured from the same center in the absence of cavity field
confinement. This result is important for the realization of efficient
spin-photon interfaces and scalable quantum computing using optically
addressable solid state spin qubits.Comment: 11 pages Main Article + 4 pages Supplementary Info Typos fixed from

Fish biodiversity patterns of a mesophotic-to-subphotic artificial reef complex and comparisons with natural substrates
Artificial reefs act as high-rugosity habitats and are often deployed to enhance fishing; however, the effects of man-made features on fish communities can be unpredictable and are poorly understood in deeper waters. In this study, we used a submersible to describe a deep-water artificial reef complex (93-245 m) off of Ewa Beach, Oahu, Hawaii, USA, and evaluated possible conservation and/or fisheries-related contributions. Sixty-eight species were recorded, with larger features supporting greater diversity of species. Species composition changed strongly with depth and a faunal break was detected from 113-137 m. While the features supported diverse fish communities, they were not similar to those on natural substrates, and were numerically dominated by only two species, Lutjanis kasmira and Chromis verater. Depth-generalist and endemic species were present at levels comparable to natural substrates, but were less abundant and species-rich than at biogenic Leptoseris reefs at similar depths. While the non-native L. kasmira was highly abundant, its presence and abundance were not associated with discernable changes in the fish community, and was not present deeper than 120 m. Finally, five species of commercially- and recreationally-important \u27Deep 7\u27 fisheries species were also observed, but the artificial reef complex was mostly too shallow to provide meaningful benefits
Timing Precision in Population Coding of Natural Scenes in the Early Visual System
The timing of spiking activity across neurons is a fundamental aspect of the neural population code. Individual neurons in the retina, thalamus, and cortex can have very precise and repeatable responses but exhibit degraded temporal precision in response to suboptimal stimuli. To investigate the functional implications for neural populations in natural conditions, we recorded in vivo the simultaneous responses, to movies of natural scenes, of multiple thalamic neurons likely converging to a common neuronal target in primary visual cortex. We show that the response of individual neurons is less precise at lower contrast, but that spike timing precision across neurons is relatively insensitive to global changes in visual contrast. Overall, spike timing precision within and across cells is on the order of 10 ms. Since closely timed spikes are more efficient in inducing a spike in downstream cortical neurons, and since fine temporal precision is necessary to represent the more slowly varying natural environment, we argue that preserving relative spike timing at a similar to 10-ms resolution is a crucial property of the neural code entering cortex
A simulation based distributed MIMO network optimisation using channel map
Channel map is an essential tool in network planning and optimisation. In this work, we present an example of MIMO channel map for distributed MIMO network optimisation. Based on the simulation of MIMO channel map, we optimise the MIMO channel capacity and the bit error rate. The results demonstrate that the effectiveness of the MIMO channel map in network optimisation
Local variation of hashtag spike trains and popularity in Twitter
We draw a parallel between hashtag time series and neuron spike trains. In
each case, the process presents complex dynamic patterns including temporal
correlations, burstiness, and all other types of nonstationarity. We propose
the adoption of the so-called local variation in order to uncover salient
dynamics, while properly detrending for the time-dependent features of a
signal. The methodology is tested on both real and randomized hashtag spike
trains, and identifies that popular hashtags present regular and so less bursty
behavior, suggesting its potential use for predicting online popularity in
social media.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Prevalence and Predictors of Vitamin D Insufficiency in Children: A Great Britain Population Based Study
Objectives
To evaluate the prevalence and predictors of vitamin D insufficiency (VDI) in children In Great Britain.
Design
A nationally representative cross-sectional study survey of children (1102) aged 4–18 years (999 white, 570 male) living in private households (January 1997–1998). Interventions provided information about dietary habits, physical activity, socio-demographics, and blood sample. Outcome measures were vitamin D insufficiency (<50 nmol/L).
Results
Vitamin D levels (mean = 62.1 nmol/L, 95%CI 60.4–63.7) were insufficient in 35%, and decreased with age in both sexes (p<0.001). Young People living between 53–59 degrees latitude had lower levels (compared with 50–53 degrees, p = 0.045). Dietary intake and gender had no effect on vitamin D status. A logistic regression model showed increased risk of VDI in the following: adolescents (14–18 years old), odds ratio (OR) = 3.6 (95%CI 1.8–7.2) compared with younger children (4–8 years); non white children (OR = 37 [95%CI 15–90]); blood levels taken December-May (OR = 6.5 [95%CI 4.3–10.1]); on income support (OR = 2.2 [95%CI 1.3–3.9]); not taking vitamin D supplementation (OR = 3.7 [95%CI 1.4–9.8]); being overweight (OR 1.6 [95%CI 1.0–2.5]); <1/2 hour outdoor exercise/day/week (OR = 1.5 [95%CI 1.0–2.3]); watched >2.5 hours of TV/day/week (OR = 1.6[95%CI 1.0–2.4]).
Conclusion
We confirm a previously under-recognised risk of VDI in adolescents. The marked higher risk for VDI in non-white children suggests they should be targeted in any preventative strategies. The association of higher risk of VDI among children who exercised less outdoors, watched more TV and were overweight highlights potentially modifiable risk factors. Clearer guidelines and an increased awareness especially in adolescents are needed, as there are no recommendations for vitamin D supplementation in older children
Spin- and energy relaxation of hot electrons at GaAs surfaces
The mechanisms for spin relaxation in semiconductors are reviewed, and the
mechanism prevalent in p-doped semiconductors, namely spin relaxation due to
the electron-hole exchange interaction, is presented in some depth. It is shown
that the solution of Boltzmann-type kinetic equations allows one to obtain
quantitative results for spin relaxation in semiconductors that go beyond the
original Bir-Aronov-Pikus relaxation-rate approximation. Experimental results
using surface sensitive two-photon photoemission techniques show that the spin
relaxation-time of electrons in p-doped GaAs at a semiconductor/metal surface
is several times longer than the corresponding bulk spin relaxation-times. A
theoretical explanation of these results in terms of the reduced density of
holes in the band-bending region at the surface is presented.Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures; earlier submission replaced by corrected and

Probing empirical contact networks by simulation of spreading dynamics
Disease, opinions, ideas, gossip, etc. all spread on social networks. How
these networks are connected (the network structure) influences the dynamics of
the spreading processes. By investigating these relationships one gains
understanding both of the spreading itself and the structure and function of
the contact network. In this chapter, we will summarize the recent literature
using simulation of spreading processes on top of empirical contact data. We
will mostly focus on disease simulations on temporal proximity networks --
networks recording who is close to whom, at what time -- but also cover other
types of networks and spreading processes. We analyze 29 empirical networks to
illustrate the methods
Metabolic engineering of the iodine content in Arabidopsis
Plants are a poor source of iodine, an essential micronutrient for human health. Several attempts of iodine biofortification of crops have been carried out, but the scarce knowledge on the physiology of iodine in plants makes results often contradictory and not generalizable. In this work, we used a molecular approach to investigate how the ability of a plant to accumulate iodine can be influenced by different mechanisms. In particular, we demonstrated that the iodine content in Arabidopsis thaliana can be increased either by facilitating its uptake with the overexpression of the human sodium-iodide symporter (NIS) or through the reduction of its volatilization by knocking-out HOL-1, a halide methyltransferase. Our experiments show that the iodine content in plants results from a balance between intake and retention. A correct manipulation of this mechanism could improve iodine biofortification of crops and prevent the release of the ozone layer-threatening methyl iodide into the atmosphere
Real-Time Cleaning and Refinement of Facial Animation Signals
With the increasing demand for real-time animated 3D content in the
entertainment industry and beyond, performance-based animation has garnered
interest among both academic and industrial communities. While recent solutions
for motion-capture animation have achieved impressive results, handmade
post-processing is often needed, as the generated animations often contain
artifacts. Existing real-time motion capture solutions have opted for standard
signal processing methods to strengthen temporal coherence of the resulting
animations and remove inaccuracies. While these methods produce smooth results,
they inherently filter-out part of the dynamics of facial motion, such as high
frequency transient movements. In this work, we propose a real-time animation
refining system that preserves -- or even restores -- the natural dynamics of
facial motions. To do so, we leverage an off-the-shelf recurrent neural network
architecture that learns proper facial dynamics patterns on clean animation
data. We parametrize our system using the temporal derivatives of the signal,
enabling our network to process animations at any framerate. Qualitative
results show that our system is able to retrieve natural motion signals from
noisy or degraded input animation.Comment: ICGSP 2020: Proceedings of the 2020 The 4th International Conference
