Virtual teams and employability in global software engineering education
Universities face many challenges when creating opportunities for student experiences of global software engineering. We provide a model for introducing global software engineering into the computing curriculum. Our model is based on a three year collaboration between Robert Gordon University, UK and the International Institute for IT Bangalore, India. We provide evidence based on student feedback from three cohorts of virtual team who never met face to face. We found potential employers were supportive of global software engineering in university curricula. We identify four key principles for global software engineering student projects: reconcile contrasting assessment demands between institutions, create a detailed joint timetable to reconcile teaching calendars, provide a project management framework to support phased delivery and carefully manage project scope

Coherent quantum state storage and transfer between two phase qubits via a resonant cavity
A network of quantum-mechanical systems showing long lived phase coherence of
its quantum states could be used for processing quantum information. As with
classical information processing, a quantum processor requires information bits
(qubits) that can be independently addressed and read out, long-term memory
elements to store arbitrary quantum states, and the ability to transfer quantum
information through a coherent communication bus accessible to a large number
of qubits. Superconducting qubits made with scalable microfabrication
techniques are a promising candidate for the realization of a large scale
quantum information processor. Although these systems have successfully passed
tests of coherent coupling for up to four qubits, communication of individual
quantum states between qubits via a quantum bus has not yet been demonstrated.
Here, we perform an experiment demonstrating the ability to coherently transfer
quantum states between two superconducting Josephson phase qubits through a
rudimentary quantum bus formed by a single, on chip, superconducting
transmission line resonant cavity of length 7 mm. After preparing an initial
quantum state with the first qubit, this quantum information is transferred and
stored as a nonclassical photon state of the resonant cavity, then retrieved at
a later time by the second qubit connected to the opposite end of the cavity.
Beyond simple communication, these results suggest that a high quality factor
superconducting cavity could also function as a long term memory element. The
basic architecture presented here is scalable, offering the possibility for the
coherent communication between a large number of superconducting qubits.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures (to appear in Nature
Acceleration-Induced Deconfinement Transitions in de Sitter Spacetime
In this note, we consider confining gauge theories in defined by
or compactification of higher-dimensional conformal field theories
with gravity duals. We investigate the behavior of these theories on de Sitter
spacetime as a function of the Hubble parameter. We find that in each case, the
de Sitter vacuum state of the field theory (defined by Euclidian continuation
from a sphere) undergoes a deconfinement transition as the Hubble parameter is
increased past a critical value. In each case, the corresponding critical de
Sitter temperature is smaller than the corresponding Minkowski-space
deconfinement temperature by a factor nearly equal to the dimension of the de
Sitter spacetime. The behavior is qualitatively and quantitatively similar to
that for confining theories defined by compactification of CFTs, studied
recently in arXiv:1007.3996.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figure
The Sound Sensation of Apical Electric Stimulation in Cochlear Implant Recipients with Contralateral Residual Hearing
BACKGROUND: Studies using vocoders as acoustic simulators of cochlear implants have generally focused on simulation of speech understanding, gender recognition, or music appreciation. The aim of the present experiment was to study the auditory sensation perceived by cochlear implant (CI) recipients with steady electrical stimulation on the most-apical electrode. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Five unilateral CI users with contralateral residual hearing were asked to vary the parameters of an acoustic signal played to the non-implanted ear, in order to match its sensation to that of the electric stimulus. They also provided a rating of similarity between each acoustic sound they selected and the electric stimulus. On average across subjects, the sound rated as most similar was a complex signal with a concentration of energy around 523 Hz. This sound was inharmonic in 3 out of 5 subjects with a moderate, progressive increase in the spacing between the frequency components. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: For these subjects, the sound sensation created by steady electric stimulation on the most-apical electrode was neither a white noise nor a pure tone, but a complex signal with a progressive increase in the spacing between the frequency components in 3 out of 5 subjects. Knowing whether the inharmonic nature of the sound was related to the fact that the non-implanted ear was impaired has to be explored in single-sided deafened patients with a contralateral CI. These results may be used in the future to better understand peripheral and central auditory processing in relation to cochlear implants
Tripartite interactions between two phase qubits and a resonant cavity
The creation and manipulation of multipartite entangled states is important
for advancements in quantum computation and communication, and for testing our
fundamental understanding of quantum mechanics and precision measurements.
Multipartite entanglement has been achieved by use of various forms of quantum
bits (qubits), such as trapped ions, photons, and atoms passing through
microwave cavities. Quantum systems based on superconducting circuits have been
used to control pair-wise interactions of qubits, either directly, through a
quantum bus, or via controllable coupling. Here, we describe the first
demonstration of coherent interactions of three directly coupled
superconducting quantum systems, two phase qubits and a resonant cavity. We
introduce a simple Bloch-sphere-like representation to help one visualize the
unitary evolution of this tripartite system as it shares a single microwave
photon. With careful control and timing of the initial conditions, this leads
to a protocol for creating a rich variety of entangled states. Experimentally,
we provide evidence for the deterministic evolution from a simple product
state, through a tripartite W-state, into a bipartite Bell-state. These
experiments are another step towards deterministically generating multipartite
entanglement in superconducting systems with more than two qubits
Thinking together: What makes Communities of Practice work?
In this article, we develop the founding elements of the concept of Communities of Practice by elaborating on the learning processes happening at the heart of such communities. In particular, we provide a consistent perspective on the notions of knowledge, knowing and knowledge sharing that is compatible with the essence of this concept – that learning entails an investment of identity and a social formation of a person. We do so by drawing richly from the work of Michael Polanyi and his conception of personal knowledge, and thereby we clarify the scope of Communities of Practice and offer a number of new insights into how to make such social structures perform well in professional settings. The conceptual discussion is substantiated by findings of a qualitative empirical study in the UK National Health Service. As a result, the process of ‘thinking together’ is conceptualized as a key part of meaningful Communities of Practice where people mutually guide each other through their understandings of the same problems in their area of mutual interest, and this way indirectly share tacit knowledge. The collaborative learning process of ‘thinking together’, we argue, is what essentially brings Communities of Practice to life and not the other way round
Resection of the liver for colorectal carcinoma metastases - A multi-institutional study of long-term survivors
In this review of a collected series of patients undergoing hepatic resection for colorectal metastases, 100 patients were found to have survived greater than five years from the time of resection. Of these 100 long-term survivors, 71 remain disease-free through the last follow-up, 19 recurred prior to five years, and ten recurred after five years. Patient characteristics that may have contributed to survival were examined. Procedures performed included five trisegmentectomies, 32 lobectomies, 16 left lateral segmentectomies, and 45 wedge resections. The margin of resection was recorded in 27 patients, one of whom had a positive margin, nine of whom had a less than or equal to 1-cm margin, and 17 of whom had a greater than 1-cm margin. Eighty-one patients had a solitary metastasis to the liver, 11 patients had two metastases, one patient had three metastases, and four patients had four metastases. Thirty patients had Stage C primary carcinoma, 40 had Stage B primary carcinoma, and one had Stage A primarycarcinoma. The disease-free interval from the time of colon resection to the time of liver resection was less than one year in 65 patients, and greater than one year in 34 patients. Three patients had bilobar metastases. Four of the patients had extrahepatic disease resected simultaneously with the liver resection. Though several contraindications to hepatic resection have been proposed in the past, five-year survival has been found in patients with extrahepatic disease resected simultaneously, patients with bilobar metastases, patients with multiple metastases, and patients with positive margins. Five-year disease-free survivors are also present in each of these subsets. It is concluded that five-year survival is possible in the presence of reported contraindications to resection, and therefore that the decision to resect the liver must be individualized. © 1988 American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons
Genetic diversity and population structure of Ascochyta rabiei from the western Iranian Ilam and Kermanshah provinces using MAT and SSR markers
Knowledge of genetic diversity in A. rabiei provides different levels of information that are important in the management of crop germplasm resources. Gene flow on a regional level indicates a significant potential risk for the regional spread of novel alleles that might contribute to fungicide resistance or the breakdown of resistance genes. Simple sequence repeat (SSR) and mating type (MAT) markers were used to determine the genetic structure, and estimate genetic diversity and the prevalence of mating types in 103 Ascochyta rabiei isolates from seven counties in the Ilam and Kermanshah provinces of western Iran (Ilam, Aseman abad, Holaylan, Chardavol, Dareh shahr, Gilangharb, and Sarpul). A set of 3 microsatellite primer pairs revealed a total of 75 alleles; the number of alleles varied from 15 to 34 for each marker. A high level of genetic variability was observed among A. rabiei isolates in the region. Genetic diversity was high (He = 0.788) within populations with corresponding high average gene flow and low genetic distances between populations. The smallest genetic distance was observed between isolates from Ilam and Chardavol. Both mating types were present in all populations, with the majority of the isolates belonging to Mat1-1 (64%), but within populations the proportions of each mating type were not significantly different from 50%. Results from this study will be useful in breeding for Ascochyta blight-resistant cultivars and developing necessary control measures
