Emerging Non-Anomalous Baryonic Symmetries in the AdS_5/CFT_4 Correspondence
We study the breaking of baryonic symmetries in the AdS_5/CFT_4
correspondence for D3 branes at Calabi-Yau three-fold singularities. This
leads, for particular VEVs, to the emergence of non-anomalous baryonic
symmetries during the renormalization group flow. We claim that these VEVs
correspond to critical values of the B-field moduli in the dual supergravity
backgrounds. We study in detail the C^3/Z_3 orbifold, the cone over F_0 and the
C^3/Z_5 orbifold. For the first two examples, we study the dual supergravity
backgrounds that correspond to the breaking of the emerging baryonic symmetries
and identify the expected Goldstone bosons and global strings in the infra-red.
In doing so we confirm the claim that the emerging symmetries are indeed

On the geometry of C^3/D_27 and del Pezzo surfaces
We clarify some aspects of the geometry of a resolution of the orbifold X =
C3/D_27, the noncompact complex manifold underlying the brane quiver standard
model recently proposed by Verlinde and Wijnholt. We explicitly realize a map
between X and the total space of the canonical bundle over a degree 1 quasi del
Pezzo surface, thus defining a desingularization of X. Our analysis relys
essentially on the relationship existing between the normalizer group of D_27
and the Hessian group and on the study of the behaviour of the Hesse pencil of

Evidence for F(uzz) Theory
We show that in the decoupling limit of an F-theory compactification, the
internal directions of the seven-branes must wrap a non-commutative four-cycle
S. We introduce a general method for obtaining fuzzy geometric spaces via toric
geometry, and develop tools for engineering four-dimensional GUT models from
this non-commutative setup. We obtain the chiral matter content and Yukawa
couplings, and show that the theory has a finite Kaluza-Klein spectrum. The
value of 1/alpha_(GUT) is predicted to be equal to the number of fuzzy points
on the internal four-cycle S. This relation puts a non-trivial restriction on
the space of gauge theories that can arise as a limit of F-theory. By viewing
the seven-brane as tiled by D3-branes sitting at the N fuzzy points of the
geometry, we argue that this theory admits a holographic dual description in
the large N limit. We also entertain the possibility of constructing string
models with large fuzzy extra dimensions, but with a high scale for quantum

Dietary soy and meat proteins induce distinct physiological and gene expression changes in rats
This study reports on a comprehensive comparison of the effects of soy and meat proteins given at the recommended level on physiological markers of metabolic syndrome and the hepatic transcriptome. Male rats were fed semi-synthetic diets for 1 wk that differed only regarding protein source, with casein serving as reference. Body weight gain and adipose tissue mass were significantly reduced by soy but not meat proteins. The insulin resistance index was improved by soy, and to a lesser extent by meat proteins. Liver triacylglycerol contents were reduced by both protein sources, which coincided with increased plasma triacylglycerol concentrations. Both soy and meat proteins changed plasma amino acid patterns. The expression of 1571 and 1369 genes were altered by soy and meat proteins respectively. Functional classification revealed that lipid, energy and amino acid metabolic pathways, as well as insulin signaling pathways were regulated differently by soy and meat proteins. Several transcriptional regulators, including NFE2L2, ATF4, Srebf1 and Rictor were identified as potential key upstream regulators. These results suggest that soy and meat proteins induce distinct physiological and gene expression responses in rats and provide novel evidence and suggestions for the health effects of different protein sources in human diets
Massive Abelian Gauge Symmetries and Fluxes in F-theory
F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold naturally describes
non-Abelian gauge symmetries through the singularity structure of the elliptic
fibration. In contrast Abelian symmetries are more difficult to study because
of their inherently global nature. We argue that in general F-theory
compactifications there are massive Abelian symmetries, such as the uplift of
the Abelian part of the U(N) gauge group on D7-branes, that arise from
non-Kahler resolutions of the dual M-theory setup. The four-dimensional
F-theory vacuum with vanishing expectation values for the gauge fields
corresponds to the Calabi-Yau limit. We propose that fluxes that are turned on
along these U(1)s are uplifted to non-harmonic four-form fluxes. We derive the
effective four-dimensional gauged supergravity resulting from F-theory
compactifications in the presence of the Abelian gauge factors including the
effects of possible fluxes on the gauging, tadpoles and matter spectrum.Comment: 49 page
Surprisingly Simple Spectra
The large N limit of the anomalous dimensions of operators in
super Yang-Mills theory described by restricted Schur polynomials, are studied.
We focus on operators labeled by Young diagrams that have two columns (both
long) so that the classical dimension of these operators is O(N). At large N
these two column operators mix with each other but are decoupled from operators
with columns. The planar approximation does not capture the large N
dynamics. For operators built with 2, 3 or 4 impurities the dilatation operator
is explicitly evaluated. In all three cases, in a certain limit, the dilatation
operator is a lattice version of a second derivative, with the lattice emerging
from the Young diagram itself. The one loop dilatation operator is diagonalized
numerically. All eigenvalues are an integer multiple of and there
are interesting degeneracies in the spectrum. The spectrum we obtain for the
one loop anomalous dimension operator is reproduced by a collection of harmonic
oscillators. This equivalence to harmonic oscillators generalizes giant
graviton results known for the BPS sector and further implies that the
Hamiltonian defined by the one loop large dilatation operator is
integrable. This is an example of an integrable dilatation operator, obtained
by summing both planar and non-planar diagrams.Comment: 34 page
Increasing body mass index from age 5 to 14 years predicts asthma among adolescents: evidence from a birth cohort study
Background:Obesity and asthma are common disorders, and the prevalence of both has increased in recent decades. It has been suggested that increases in the prevalence of obesity might in part explain the increase in asthma prevalence. This study aims to examine the prospective association between change in body mass index (BMI) z-score between ages 5 and 14 years and asthma symptoms at 14 years. Methods:Data was taken from the Mater University Study of Pregnancy and its outcomes (MUSP), a birth cohort of 7223 mothers and children started in Brisbane (Australia) in 1981. BMI was measured at age 5 and 14 years. Asthma was assessed from maternal reports of symptoms at age 5 and 14 years. In this study analyses were conducted on 2911 participants who had information on BMI and asthma at both ages. Results: BMI z-score at age 14 and the change in BMI z-score from age 5 to 14–years were positively associated with asthma symptoms at age 14 years, whereas BMI z-score at age 5 was not associated with asthma at age 14. Adjustment for a range of early-life exposures did not substantially alter these findings. The association between change in BMI z-score with asthma symptoms at 14 years appeared stronger for male subjects compared with female subjects but there was no statistical evidence for a sex difference (P=0.36). Conclusions: Increase in BMI z-score between age 5 and 14 years is associated with increased risk of asthma symptoms in adolescence
From counting to construction of BPS states in N=4 SYM
We describe a universal element in the group algebra of symmetric groups,
whose characters provides the counting of quarter and eighth BPS states at weak
coupling in N=4 SYM, refined according to representations of the global
symmetry group. A related projector acting on the Hilbert space of the free
theory is used to construct the matrix of two-point functions of the states
annihilated by the one-loop dilatation operator, at finite N or in the large N
limit. The matrix is given simply in terms of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of
symmetric groups and dimensions of U(N) representations. It is expected, by
non-renormalization theorems, to contain observables at strong coupling. Using
the stringy exclusion principle, we interpret a class of its eigenvalues and
eigenvectors in terms of giant gravitons. We also give a formula for the action
of the one-loop dilatation operator on the orthogonal basis of the free theory,

Wall Crossing, Quivers and Crystals
We study the spectrum of BPS D-branes on a Calabi-Yau manifold using the 0+1
dimensional quiver gauge theory that describes the dynamics of the branes at
low energies. The results of Kontsevich and Soibelman predict how the
degeneracies change. We argue that Seiberg dualities of the quiver gauge
theories, which change the basis of BPS states, correspond to crossing the
"walls of the second kind." There is a large class of examples, including local
del Pezzo surfaces, where the BPS degeneracies of quivers corresponding to one
D6 brane bound to arbitrary numbers of D4, D2 and D0 branes are counted by
melting crystal configurations. We show that the melting crystals that arise
are a discretization of the Calabi-Yau geometry. The shape of the crystal is
determined by the Calabi-Yau geometry and the background B-field, and its
microscopic structure by the quiver Q. We prove that the BPS degeneracies
computed from Q and Q' are related by the Kontsevich Soibelman formula, using a
geometric realization of the Seiberg duality in the crystal. We also show that,
in the limit of infinite B-field, the combinatorics of crystals arising from
the quivers becomes that of the topological vertex. We thus re-derive the
