The role of diffusion on the interface thickness in a ventilated filling box
We examine the role of diffusivity, whether molecular or turbulent, on the steady-state stratification in a ventilated filling box. The buoyancy-driven displacement ventilation model of Linden et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 212, 1990, p. 309) predicts the formation of a two-layer stratification when a single plume is introduced into an enclosure with vents at the top and bottom. The model assumes that diffusion plays no role in the development of the ambient buoyancy stratification: diffusion is a slow process and the entrainment of ambient fluid into the plume from the diffuse interface will act to thin the interface resulting in a near discontinuity of density between the upper and lower layers. This prediction has been corroborated by small-scale salt bath experiments; however, full-scale measurements in ventilated rooms and complementary numerical simulations suggest an interface that is not sharp but rather smeared out over a finite thickness. For a given plume buoyancy flux, as the cross-sectional area of the enclosure increases the volume of fluid that must be entrained by the plume to maintain a sharp interface also increases. Therefore the balance between the diffusive thickening of the interface and plume-driven thinning favours a thicker interface. Conversely, the interface thickness decreases with increasing source buoyancy flux, although the dependence is relatively weak. Our analysis presents two models for predicting the interface thickness as a function of the enclosure height, base area, composite vent area, plume buoyancy flux and buoyancy diffusivity. Model results are compared with interface thickness measurements based on previously reported data.

Chiral-Symmetry and Strange Four-Quark Matrix Elements
We consider the matrix elements of the left-handed flavor-conserving
four-quark operators in the nucleon and pion states. Using chiral symmetry, we
derive relationships among these matrix elements. We argue that the rule of hyperon and kaon non-leptonic weak decay implies possible large

Covariant QCD Modeling of Light Meson Physics
We summarize recent progress in soft QCD modeling based on the set of
Dyson--Schwinger equations truncated to ladder-rainbow level. This covariant
approach to hadron physics accommodates quark confinement and implements the
QCD one-loop renormalization group behavior. We compare the dressed quark
propagator, pseudoscalar and vector meson masses as a function of quark mass,
and the rho -> pi pi coupling to recent lattice-QCD data. The error in the
Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relation with increasing quark mass is quantified by
comparison to the exact pseudoscalar mass relation as evaluated within the

Masses and Decay Constants of Heavy-Light Mesons Using the Multistate Smearing Technique
We present results for f_B and masses of low-lying heavy-light mesons.
Calculations were performed in the quenched approximation using multistate
smearing functions generated from a spinless relativistic quark model
Hamiltonian. Beta values range from 5.7 to 6.3, and light quark masses
corresponding to pion masses as low as 300 MeV are computed at each value. We

A Lattice Study of the Magnetic Moment and the Spin Structure of the Nucleon
Using an approach free from momentum extrapolation, we calculate the nucleon
magnetic moment and the fraction of the nucleon spin carried by the quark
angular momentum in the quenched lattice QCD approximation. Quarks with three
values of lattice masses, 210, 124 and 80 MeV, are formulated on the lattice
using the standard Wilson approach. At every mass, 100 gluon configurations on
16^3 x 32 lattice with \beta=6.0 are used for statistical averaging. The
results are compared with the previous calculations with momentum
extrapolation. The contribution of the disconnected diagrams is studied at the

A calculation of the parameter in the static limit
We calculate the parameter, relevant for --
mixing, from a lattice gauge theory simulation at . The bottom
quarks are simulated in the static theory, the light quarks with Wilson
fermions. Improved smearing functions produced by a variational technique,
MOST, are used to reduce statistical errors and minimize excited-state
contamination of the ground-state signal. We obtain (statistical) (systematic) which corresponds to
(statistical) (systematic) for
the one-loop renormalization-scheme-independent parameter. The systematic
errors include the uncertainty due to alternative (less favored) treatments of
the perturbatively-calculated mixing coefficients; this uncertainty is at least
as large as residual differences between Wilson-static and clover-static
results. Our result agrees with extrapolations of results from relativistic

Metabolic flexibility as a major predictor of spatial distribution in microbial communities
A better understand the ecology of microbes and their role in the global ecosystem could be achieved if traditional ecological theories can be applied to microbes. In ecology organisms are defined as specialists or generalists according to the breadth of their niche. Spatial distribution is often used as a proxy measure of niche breadth; generalists have broad niches and a wide spatial distribution and specialists a narrow niche and spatial distribution. Previous studies suggest that microbial distribution patterns are contrary to this idea; a microbial generalist genus (Desulfobulbus) has a limited spatial distribution while a specialist genus (Methanosaeta) has a cosmopolitan distribution. Therefore, we hypothesise that this counter-intuitive distribution within generalist and specialist microbial genera is a common microbial characteristic. Using molecular fingerprinting the distribution of four microbial genera, two generalists, Desulfobulbus and the methanogenic archaea Methanosarcina, and two specialists, Methanosaeta and the sulfate-reducing bacteria Desulfobacter were analysed in sediment samples from along a UK estuary. Detected genotypes of both generalist genera showed a distinct spatial distribution, significantly correlated with geographic distance between sites. Genotypes of both specialist genera showed no significant differential spatial distribution. These data support the hypothesis that the spatial distribution of specialist and generalist microbes does not match that seen with specialist and generalist large organisms. It may be that generalist microbes, while having a wider potential niche, are constrained, possibly by intrageneric competition, to exploit only a small part of that potential niche while specialists, with far fewer constraints to their niche, are more capable of filling their potential niche more effectively, perhaps by avoiding intrageneric competition. We suggest that these counter-intuitive distribution patterns may be a common feature of microbes in general and represent a distinct microbial principle in ecology, which is a real challenge if we are to develop a truly inclusive ecology
Acute Comitant Esotropia in a Child With a Cerebellar Tumor
We report a case of acute comitant esotropia in a child with a cerebellar tumor. A 3-year-old boy was referred for management of a 9 month history of acute acquired comitant esotropia. On first presentation, the patient's angle of esodeviation was 50 prism-diopters (PD) at distance and near fixation without any lateral incomitance. The cycloplegic refraction revealed +0.75 diopters in both eyes. Very mild bilateral papilledema was found on the fundus examination, but the neurological examination did not reveal any other pathological findings. Brain MRI showed a 5 cm mass located in the midline of the cerebellum as well as hydrocephalus. The mass was completely excised and histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pilocytic astrocytoma. Despite neurosurgery, the patient's strabismus remained unresolved. One year after neurosurgery, both medial rectus muscles were surgically recessed by 6 mm, resulting in esotropia of 8PD at distant and near fixation without restoration of bifoveal fusion at follow-up 2 years after the eye muscle surgery. Therefore, acute onset comitant esotropia in a child can be the first sign of a cerebellar tumor, even without any other neurological signs and symptoms
Meniscoplasty for stable osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral femoral condyle combined with a discoid lateral meniscus: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral femoral condyle is relatively rare, and it is reported to often be combined with a discoid lateral meniscus. Given the potential for healing, conservative management is indicated for stable osteochondritis dissecans in patients who are skeletally immature. However, patients with osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral femoral condyle combined with a discoid lateral meniscus often have persistent symptoms despite conservative management.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present the case of a seven-year-old Korean girl who had osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral femoral condyle combined with a discoid lateral meniscus, which healed after meniscoplasty for the symptomatic lateral discoid meniscus without surgical intervention for the osteochondritis dissecans. In addition, healing of the osteochondritis dissecans lesion was confirmed by an MRI scan five months after the operation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Meniscoplasty can be recommended for symptomatic stable juvenile osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral femoral condyle combined with a discoid lateral meniscus when conservative treatment fails.</p
