Relativistic X-ray Lines from the Inner Accretion Disks Around Black Holes
Relativistic X-ray emission lines from the inner accretion disk around black
holes are reviewed. Recent observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory,
X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission-Newton, and Suzaku are revealing these lines to be
good probes of strong gravitational effects. A number of important
observational and theoretical developments are highlighted, including evidence
of black hole spin and effects such as gravitational light bending, the
detection of relativistic lines in stellar-mass black holes, and evidence of
orbital-timescale line flux variability. In addition, the robustness of the
relativistic disk lines against absorption, scattering, and continuum effects
is discussed. Finally, prospects for improved measures of black hole spin and
understanding the spin history of supermassive black holes in the context of
black hole-galaxy co-evolution are presented. The best data and most rigorous
results strongly suggest that relativistic X-ray disk lines can drive future

PCA-RECT: An Energy-efficient Object Detection Approach for Event Cameras
We present the first purely event-based, energy-efficient approach for object
detection and categorization using an event camera. Compared to traditional
frame-based cameras, choosing event cameras results in high temporal resolution
(order of microseconds), low power consumption (few hundred mW) and wide
dynamic range (120 dB) as attractive properties. However, event-based object
recognition systems are far behind their frame-based counterparts in terms of
accuracy. To this end, this paper presents an event-based feature extraction
method devised by accumulating local activity across the image frame and then
applying principal component analysis (PCA) to the normalized neighborhood
region. Subsequently, we propose a backtracking-free k-d tree mechanism for
efficient feature matching by taking advantage of the low-dimensionality of the
feature representation. Additionally, the proposed k-d tree mechanism allows
for feature selection to obtain a lower-dimensional dictionary representation
when hardware resources are limited to implement dimensionality reduction.
Consequently, the proposed system can be realized on a field-programmable gate
array (FPGA) device leading to high performance over resource ratio. The
proposed system is tested on real-world event-based datasets for object
categorization, showing superior classification performance and relevance to
state-of-the-art algorithms. Additionally, we verified the object detection
method and real-time FPGA performance in lab settings under non-controlled
illumination conditions with limited training data and ground truth

Quantification of carbon particulates produced under open liquid pool and prevaporised flame conditions: Waste cooking oil biodiesel and diesel blends
The soot volume fraction (SVF) of waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel and blends was quantified and compared under the same total carbon flow rate via two experimental setups, namely prevaporised diffusion jet flames and pool flames using extinction calibrated laser induced-incandescence (LII). The spatial SVF distribution shows that for diesel-rich fuels, soot formation peaks near the flame and is convected downstream, whereas biodiesel flames show a more evenly distributed SVF at the flame center region. An increase in biodiesel fraction in diesel results in a reduced propensity for soot, as evident in both pool and vapour flames. Comparison of the radial profiles of SVF along the centerline shows broader SVF profiles for pool flames, reflecting the longer residence times for soot diffusion and growth compared to vapour flames, which reflected the lower mass flux for the pool burner. The total soot produced from pool flames was found to be higher than vapour flame by a factor of two for the same fuel mass consumption rate. WCO biodiesel exhibited the lowest total SVF value regardless of flame type owing to the combined effects of lack of aromatic compounds and fuel chemistry. The soot primary particle sizes produced by WCO biodiesel show lower mean diameter values by a factor of approximately 1.5 compared to diesel-produced soot. The pool flames produced carbon particulates of larger mean diameter by around 22% and 8% for diesel and WCO biodiesel, respectively, relative to the counterpart vapour flames, as a result of extended soot surface growth period.Royal Society-Newton Advanced Fellow (NA160115)

Experimental and numerical study on soot formation in laminar diffusion flames of biodiesels and methyl esters
Biodiesel and blends with petroleum diesel are promising renewable alternative fuels for engines. In the present study, the soot concentration generated from four biodiesels, two pure methyl esters, and their blends with petroleum diesel are measured in a series of fully pre-vapourised co-flow diffusion flames. The experimental measurements are conducted using planar laser induced-incandescence (LII) and laser extinction optical methods. The results show that the maximum local soot volume fractions of neat biodiesels are 24.4% - 41.2% of pure diesel, whereas the mean soot volume fraction of neat biodiesel cases was measured as 11.3% - 21.3% of pure diesel. The addition of biodiesel to diesel not only reduces the number of inception particles, but also inhibits their surface growth. The discretised population balance modelling of a complete set of soot processes is employed to compute the 2D soot volume fraction and size distribution across the tested flames. The results show that the model also demonstrates a reduction of both soot volume fraction and primary particle size by adding biodiesel fuels. However, it is not possible to clearly determine which factors are responsible for the reduction from the comparison alone. Moreover, analysis of the discrepancies between numerical and experimental results for diesel and low-blending cases offers an insight for the refinement of soot formation modelling of combustion with large-molecule fuels.Bo Tian is supported by the fellowship provided by ZEPI. Still a Host of Hosts for Wolbachia: Analysis of Recent Data Suggests That 40% of Terrestrial Arthropod Species Are Infected
Wolbachia are intracellular bacteria that manipulate the reproduction of their arthropod hosts in remarkable ways. They are predominantly transmitted vertically from mother to offspring but also occasionally horizontally between species. In doing so, they infect a huge range of arthropod species worldwide. Recently, a statistical analysis estimated the infection frequency of Wolbachia among arthropod hosts to be 66%. At the same time, the authors of this analysis highlighted some weaknesses of the underlying data and concluded that in order to improve the estimate, a larger number of individuals per species should be assayed and species be chosen more randomly. Here we apply the statistical approach to a more appropriate data set from a recent survey that tested both a broad range of species and a sufficient number of individuals per species. Indeed, we find a substantially different infection frequency: We now estimate the proportion of Wolbachia-infected species to be around 40% which is lower than the previous estimate but still points to a surprisingly high number of arthropods harboring the bacteria. Notwithstanding this difference, we confirm the previous result that, within a given species, typically most or only a few individuals are infected. Moreover, we extend our analysis to include several reproductive parasites other than Wolbachia that were also screened for in the aforementioned empirical survey. For these symbionts we find a large variation in estimated infection frequencies and corroborate the finding that Wolbachia are the most abundant endosymbionts among arthropod species
Protocol for a novel sodium and blood pressure reduction intervention targeting online grocery shoppers with hypertension – the SaltSwitch Online Grocery Shopping randomized trial
Background: High dietary sodium intake is a leading cause of hypertension. A major source of dietary sodium is salt added to processed food products available in retail food environments. The fast-growing online grocery shopping setting provides new opportunities for salt reduction interventions that support consumers in choosing healthier options. Methods: The SaltSwitch Online Grocery Shopping randomized controlled trial is investigating the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of a novel intervention for lowering salt consumption and blood pressure amongst people with hypertension who shop for groceries online. The intervention is based on a bespoke web browser extension that interfaces with a major retailer's online store to highlight and interpret product sodium content and suggest similar but lower-sodium alternatives. The primary outcome of interest is change in mean systolic blood pressure between individuals randomized (1:1) to the intervention and control (usual online shopping) arms at 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes are diastolic blood pressure, spot urinary sodium and sodium:potassium ratio, sodium purchases, and dietary intake. Intervention implementation and lessons for future uptake will be assessed using a mixed methods process evaluation. Participants with hypertension who shop online for groceries and exhibit high sodium purchasing behavior are being recruited across Australia. A target sample size of 1,966 provides 80% power (2-sided alpha = 0.05) to detect a 2 mm Hg difference in systolic blood pressure between groups, assuming a 15 mm Hg standard deviation, after allowing for a 10% dropout rate. Discussion: This trial will provide evidence on an innovative intervention to potentially reduce salt intake and blood pressure in people with hypertension. The intervention caters to individual preferences by encouraging sustainable switches to similar but lower-salt products. If effective, the intervention will be readily scalable at low cost by interfacing with existing online retail environments
Effectiveness of DNA-recombinant anti-hepatitis B vaccines in blood donors: a cohort study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although various studies have demonstrated efficacy of DNA-recombinant anti-hepatitis B vaccines, their effectiveness in health care settings has not been researched adequately. This gap is particularly visible for blood donors, a group of significant importance in the reduction of transfusion-transmitted hepatitis B.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a double cohort study of 1411 repeat blood donors during the period 1998–2002, involving a vaccinated and an unvaccinated cohort, with matching of the two in terms of sex, age and residence. Average follow-up was 3.17 person-years. The outcome measure was infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV), defined by testing positive on serologic markers HBsAg or anti-HBC. All blood donors were from the blood bank in Joaçaba, federal state of Santa Catarina, Brazil.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The cohorts did not differ significantly regarding sex, age and marital status but the vaccinated cohort had higher mean number of blood donations and higher proportion of those residing in the county capital Joaçaba. Hepatitis B incidences per 1000 person-years were zero among vaccinated and 2,33 among non-vaccinated, resulting in 100% vaccine effectiveness with 95% confidence interval from 30,1% to 100%. The number of vaccinated persons necessary to avoid one HBV infection in blood donors was estimated at 429 with 95% confidence interval from 217 to 21422.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results showed very high effectiveness of DNA-recombinant anti-HBV vaccines in blood donors. Its considerable variation in this study is likely due to the limited follow-up and the influence of confounding factors normally balanced out in efficacy clinical trials.</p
CLONING OF MELANOMA ANTIGEN-1 (MAGE-1) GENE FROM FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION BIOPSY OF HEPATIC TISSUE OF HEPATOCELLULER CARCINOMA PATIENTS
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies in Asia. HCC expresses mRNA of melanoma
antigen-1 (MAGE-1) and not expressed in non-tumor hepatic cells. This expression has been taking place at the early
malignant transformation and continuously undergoing its progression. MAGE-1 is the important marker for diagnose
HCC. MAGE-1 protein could be detected with antibody to MAGE-1 protein which could be obtained by doing clone of
MAGE-1. However, the recombinant plasmid of MAGE-1 clone for developing of the diagnosis of HCC hasn’t been
obtained. The objective was to clone of coding sequence (CDS) of MAGE-1 from fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB)
of HCC into vector and to obtain MAGE-1 recombinant plasmid. cDNA of MAGE-1 were extracted then continued by
RT PCR and nested PCR. The PCR product was cloned to pET101/D-TOPO and transformed to E. coli Top10. Analyze
of recombinant plasmid was undertaken by sequencing and restriction test. The result revealed that CDS of MAGE-1
were isolated and obtained band +1105 bp at first round and +931 bp at second round. The recombinant plasmid
pETGM/MAGE1-HCC contained 927 nucleotides that encoded 309 amino acids. Partial sequence of MAGE-1 can be
accessed in GeneBank EU161102 and ABW06861. Analyze of CDS MAGE-1 from HCC and GeneBank had 100%
homology with M77481 and NM_004988 (both from skin melanoma tissue) and 99% with BC017555 (from skin
melanoma tissue) and AY148486 (from HCC). This study obtains recombinant plasmid pETGM/MAGE1-HCC from the
FNAB of HCC. It reveals that MAGE-1 recombinant plasmid that can be used for developing the diagnosis of HC
An online network tool for quality information to answer questions about occupational safety and health: usability and applicability
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Common information facilities do not always provide the quality information needed to answer questions on health or health-related issues, such as Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) matters. Barriers may be the accessibility, quantity and readability of information. Online Question & Answer (Q&A) network tools, which link questioners directly to experts can overcome some of these barriers. When designing and testing online tools, assessing the usability and applicability is essential. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the usability and applicability of a new online Q&A network tool for answers on OSH questions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We applied a cross-sectional usability test design. Eight occupational health experts and twelve potential questioners from the working population (workers) were purposively selected to include a variety of computer- and internet-experiences. During the test, participants were first observed while executing eight tasks that entailed important features of the tool. In addition, they were interviewed. Through task observations and interviews we assessed applicability, usability (effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction) and facilitators and barriers in use.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Most features were usable, though several could be improved. Most tasks were executed effectively. Some tasks, for example searching stored questions in categories, were not executed efficiently and participants were less satisfied with the corresponding features. Participants' recommendations led to improvements. The tool was found mostly applicable for additional information, to observe new OSH trends and to improve contact between OSH experts and workers. Hosting and support by a trustworthy professional organization, effective implementation campaigns, timely answering and anonymity were seen as important use requirements.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This network tool is a promising new strategy for offering company workers high quality information to answer OSH questions. Q&A network tools can be an addition to existing information facilities in the field of OSH, but also to other healthcare fields struggling with how to answer questions from people in practice with high quality information. In the near future, we will focus on the use of the tool and its effects on information and knowledge dissemination.</p
Integration of decision support systems to improve decision support performance
Decision support system (DSS) is a well-established research and development area. Traditional isolated, stand-alone DSS has been recently facing new challenges. In order to improve the performance of DSS to meet the challenges, research has been actively carried out to develop integrated decision support systems (IDSS). This paper reviews the current research efforts with regard to the development of IDSS. The focus of the paper is on the integration aspect for IDSS through multiple perspectives, and the technologies that support this integration. More than 100 papers and software systems are discussed. Current research efforts and the development status of IDSS are explained, compared and classified. In addition, future trends and challenges in integration are outlined. The paper concludes that by addressing integration, better support will be provided to decision makers, with the expectation of both better decisions and improved decision making processes
