    Self-harm as the first presentation of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adolescents.

    BACKGROUND: Self-harm (SH) in adolescence has previously been shown to significantly overlap with both attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and emotional dysregulation (ED). Our objective as such was to investigate the relationship between self-harm and ADHD in our population and consider its clinical relevance. METHODS: This case series analysis examined 124 presentations of SH in 13- to 17 year-olds to Accident and Emergency Departments in South West London (97F:27M). Strength and Difficulties Questionnaires (SDQs) were used to screen for ADHD/hyperactivity and ED, and scores were compared with reference data obtained from Meltzer et al. (1999, International Review of Psychiatry (Abingdon, England), 15, 185). RESULTS: Mean SDQ ADHD/hyperactivity scores were significantly higher in our SH sample compared to reference data (p < .0001). Furthermore, significantly greater ED scores were found in our sample compared with the control reference data. CONCLUSION: Our findings contribute to the evidence for an important link between ADHD and clinical presentations of SH and suggest there to be value in screening girls presenting to A&E with self-harm for ADHD. We speculate that ED plays a role in the evolution of SH in dysregulated ADHD. We recommend that clinicians assessing adolescents have self-harmed to be aware of possible ADHD symptoms and screen as appropriate; however, future research examining the temporal association between ADHD, emotional dysregulation and self-harm is required to establish causal direction

    Factors affecting the practicality of solid-phase microextraction VOC analysis of artworks featuring polymeric materials in open environments

    Currently there is no proven method for in-situ monitoring of the decay progression of objects featuring polymeric materials. One potential method which is gaining traction, is the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOC) via solid phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS). Few studies have focused on repeated, long-term monitoring of objects in open heritage environments via SPME-GC/MS. Specifically, the combined effects on methodological performance of the fibre exposure time in conjunction with the effects of variable environmental conditions over that period and fibre location with relation to the object have yet to be investigated. In order to study these effects, we tracked four key VOCs emitted from Naum Gabo's constructivist sculpture Construction in Space ‘Two Cones’ (Tate) by repeated SPME-GC/MS analysis. Five fibres in total were placed around the object and within its storage room. Two separate experimental campaigns were carried out, one exposing the fibres to the object for 1 Day, the other for 7 days. Our results show that an exposure time of 7 Days led to a lower relative standard deviation than for a 1 Day exposure time for each of the four VOCs. However, our results also show that the performance of individual fibres, at their specific locations, was better with an exposure time of 1 Day. Furthermore, we highlight the comparability of the background VOC profile to a location within the object's storage crate. The implications of our research are two-fold – firstly, when monitoring in an open environment, a shorter exposure time leads to more repeatable analysis over long time periods, however, it is at the expense of the ability to calculate concentrations as the fibre has not yet reached equilibrium. Secondly, background and object VOC profiles can be difficult to distinguish unless the fibre is in immediate vicinity of the point of interest

    Are we overestimating the permanence of cellulose triacetate cinematographic films? A mathematical model for the vinegar syndrome

    Among the earliest signs of degradation in cellulose triacetate cinematographic films is the generation of acetic acid due to hydrolytic deacetylation of the polymer, marked by an increase in the acidity of the films and emissions of acetic acid leading to a characteristic vinegar odour. We propose a mathematical model for predicting the onset of the vinegar syndrome which accounts for the autocatalytic effect of acetic acid on the deacetylation reaction. Model parameters are estimated from previously published experimental data from other research groups. These show free acidity changes in cellulose triacetate films subjected to accelerated ageing at temperatures of 70–100 °C. The model is validated against a different set of previously published experimental data of cellulose triacetate films aged at 21 °C and 35 °C, at 20, 35 and 50% relative humidity. The model demonstrates good quantitative agreement with the published experimental data. Predictions of film permanence at lower temperatures, similar to those present in the archives in which the films are typically stored, are made and compared with the predictions of film conservation guidelines. The results indicate that film permanence may be overestimated by existing guidelines, which do not account for autocatalysis in their modelling of the deacetylation rate. Our results suggest that cold storage, a common film conservation strategy, may be less effective at inhibiting degradation than previously thought. As cold storage typically requires film to be kept in confined spaces with limited air movement, conditions which promote autocatalysis, the inclusion of autocatalysis in our model is highly applicable to simulating this environment

    Unveiling the importance of diffusion on the deterioration of cellulose acetate artefacts: The profile of plasticiser loss as assessed by infrared microscopy

    Cellulose acetate (CA) artefacts are one of the most valued plastic items in museum collections and are known to present stability issues, with the loss of plasticiser being among the main degradation processes. This study investigates the concentration distribution of diethyl phthalate (DEP) plasticiser throughout the dimensions of CA using infrared microscopy for the first time. Artificial ageing experiments using reference and historic CA plasticised with DEP were performed to assess the change in the concentration profiles as a function of ageing time. Our analysis indicates that the plasticiser loss from CA artefacts is likely controlled by its diffusion, resulting in a concentration gradient in which lower plasticiser contents are observed at the external layers of the material

    Currently, there are few options for in situ non-destructive monitoring of the stability of modern polymeric materials within heritage collections. Past research has focused on exploiting the information contained in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from an object to understand decay mechanisms or identify the polymer composition (Lattuati-Derieux et al. 2013; Hakkarainen, Albertsson, and Karlsson 1997). The fundamental shortcoming of many previous studies utilising VOC capture is that often they use destructive analysis, elevated temperatures, artificially aged samples or combinations of these during analysis. While these studies have given us a wealth of information regarding decay profiles and key VOCs emitted from specific polymers, they often lack real-world applicability

    Dendritic planarity of Purkinje cells is independent of Reelin signaling

    The dendritic planarity of Purkinje cells is critical for cerebellar circuit formation. In the absence of Crk and CrkL, the Reelin pathway does not function resulting in partial Purkinje cell migration and defective dendritogenesis. However, the relationships among Purkinje cell migration, dendritic development and Reelin signaling have not been clearly delineated. Here, we use synchrotron X-ray microscopy to obtain 3-D images of Golgi-stained Purkinje cell dendrites. Purkinje cells that failed to migrate completely exhibited conical dendrites with abnormal 3-D arborization and reduced dendritic complexity. Furthermore, their spines were fewer in number with a distorted morphology. In contrast, Purkinje cells that migrated successfully displayed planar dendritic and spine morphologies similar to normal cells, despite reduced dendritic complexity. These results indicate that, during cerebellar formation, Purkinje cells migrate into an environment that supports development of dendritic planarity and spine formation. While Reelin signaling is important for the migration process, it does not make a direct major contribution to dendrite formation.1111Ysciescopu

    An examination of the temporal and geographical patterns of psychiatric emergency service use by multiple visit patients as a means for their early detection

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background:</p> <p>Frequent users of the psychiatric emergency service (PES) place a heavy burden upon the mental health care delivery system. The aim of this study was to identify distinct temporal or geographical patterns of PES use by these patients as potential markers for their early detection.</p> <p>Methods:</p> <p>Diagnostic profiles were obtained for patients making an intermediate (4 to 10) or a high (11 or more) number of visits to a general hospital PES in Montreal (Canada) between 1985 and 2004. Between-group comparisons were made with regards to several parameters. These included the time intervals between consecutive visits, visit clustering (single, repeating, and the time interval to the first cluster) and visits made to three other services where data was similarly acquired from 2002 to 2004.</p> <p>Results:</p> <p>The two multiple visit groups differed with regards to diagnostic profiles and actual time between consecutive visits (significantly shorter in patients with 11 or more visits). Patients with 11 or more visits were more likely to have a single cluster (3 or more visits/3 months) or repeating clusters (4 visits/3 months) in their patterns of use. Personality disorders were more prevalent in patients with single clusters as they were, along with schizophrenia, in those with repeating clusters. In addition, clusters were found to occur sufficiently early so as to be potentially useful as markers for early detection. Ten percent of those with 11 or more visits and 16% of those with an intermediate number of visits frequented at least one other PES. A small number of patients, primarily those with substance abuse, made over 50% of their visits to other services.</p> <p>Conclusion:</p> <p>Temporal and geographical patterns of use differed significantly between the multiple visit groups. These patterns, combined with distinct diagnostic profiles, could potentially lead to the more rapid identification and treatment of specific sub-groups of multiple visit patients.</p

    An increased estimate of the merger rate of double neutron stars from observations of a highly relativistic system

    The merger of close binary systems containing two neutron stars should produce a burst of gravitational waves, as predicted by the theory of general relativity. A reliable estimate of the double-neutron-star merger rate in the Galaxy is crucial in order to predict whether current gravity wave detectors will be successful in detecting such bursts. Present estimates of this rate are rather low, because we know of only a few double-neutron-star binaries with merger times less than the age of the Universe. Here we report the discovery of a 22-ms pulsar, PSR J0737-3039, which is a member of a highly relativistic double-neutron-star binary with an orbital period of 2.4 hours. This system will merge in about 85 Myr, a time much shorter than for any other known neutron-star binary. Together with the relatively low radio luminosity of PSR J0737-3039, this timescale implies an order-of-magnitude increase in the predicted merger rate for double-neutron-star systems in our Galaxy (and in the rest of the Universe).Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

    We review the properties and applications of binary and millisecond pulsars. Our knowledge of these exciting objects has greatly increased in recent years, mainly due to successful surveys which have brought the known pulsar population to over 1300. There are now 56 binary and millisecond pulsars in the Galactic disk and a further 47 in globular clusters. This review is concerned primarily with the results and spin-offs from these surveys which are of particular interest to the relativity community.Comment: 59 pages, 26 figures, 5 tables.
