    A Conserved Vector Current test using low energy beta-beams

    We discuss the possibility of testing the weak currents and, in particular, the weak magnetism term through the measurement of the electron anti-neutrinos capture by protons at a low energy beta-beam facility. We analyze the sensitivity using both the total number of events and the angular distribution of the positrons emitted in a water Cerenkov detector. We show that the weak magnetism form factor might be determined with better than several percent accuracy using the angular distribution. This offers a new way of testing the Conserved Vector Current hypothesis.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Design S-N curves for old Portuguese and French riveted bridges connection based on statistical analyses

    Maintenance of ancient road and railway metallic bridges has become a major concern for governmental agencies in the past few decades. Indeed, since the construction of these structures, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, traffic conditions have evolved, both in weight and frequency. In the purpose to assess the remaining life of old metallic bridges, some critical structural details have been identified and associated to S-N curves in order to be used in damage estimation (using Palmgren-Miner’s rule for cumulative damage, for example). These constructional details are described by design rules of several European and North American standards, such as the Eurocode 3, BS 5400 and AASHTO standards. The particularity of ancient bridges is that hot riveted assemblies, commonly used for their construction, are not represented in most construction standards. Further experiences on the matter by numerous research teams have suggested detail category C71 from the Eurocode 3 as appropriate. In this paper, experimental data from double shear assemblies manufactures from three different metallic ancient bridges is used to identify, through a statistical analysis, the S-N curves that best fit this constructional detail.     O agroturismo requer estudo de viabilidade de implantação e planejamento adequado para que se desenvolva de forma sustentável. Assim, este projeto visa prospectar a viabilidade agroturística do município fluminense de Cachoeiras de Macacu, uma vez que este, além de exibir grande riqueza de atributos naturais, desenvolve expressiva atividade agrícola e pecuária, vinculada à agricultura familiar, apresentando potencial para a exploração de atividades turísticas de cunho ecológico, e também, associadas às atividades rurais produtivas. Para tanto, foram levantados indicadores por meio de trabalhos de campo e consulta bibliográfica. Os dados coletados estão sendo integrados e apresentados em um relatório diagnóstico, o qual deverá subsidiar a elaboração de um plano para orientar o desenvolvimento de iniciativas de agroturismo no município. Os resultados preliminares estão mostrando que o município exibe potencialidade ao desenvolvimento da atividade entre os pequenos produtores familiares, porém, sua implantação irá requerer planejamento, orientação e acompanhamento em seus passos iniciais

    Emanation Study of Gas Radon on the Ancient Cuexcomate Geyser in Puebla City, Mexico

    Radon measurements were collected over a period of nine months in the area of the ancient Cuexcomate geyser, in Puebla City. For measuring radon, the passive method of nuclear tracks in solids was used, using polycarbonate CR-39 as radiation sensitive material. Radon concentrations varied in strong anti-correlation with the rainfall intensity. And are lower compared to other locations, in concordance with the stratigraphic composition, as travertine and deposits of volcanic origin, corresponding to the geyser chemical composition and the active environment in the north part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt with an andesitic and basalt composition

    Identification of New Genes Related to Virulence of Xanthomonas axonopodis Pv. Citri during Citrus Host Interactions

    A mutant library of the bacterium Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri strain 306 pathotype A (Xac), the causative agent of most aggressive Asiatic type A citrus canker, was screened regarding altered canker symptoms after inoculations into Citrus sinensis and Citrus limonia host leaves. Twenty-six mutants have shown phenotypic virulence changes and have respectively knocked out gene identified by sequencing. In vivo growth curves were obtained for nine mutants to quantify how the mutations could affect pathogen's adaptability to growth inside and attack host plant infected tissue. Among identified genes in mutated strains, we could find those that until now had not been reported as being involved in Xac adaptation and/or virulence, such as predicted to encode for xylose repressor-like protein (XAC Delta xylR), Fe-S oxidoredutase (XAC Delta aslB), helicase IV (XAC Delta helD), ubiquinol cytochrome c oxidoreductase iron-sulfur subunit (XAC Delta petA), chromosome partitioning protein (XAC Delta parB) and cell division protein FtsB (XAC Delta ftsB), in addition to genes predicted to encode for hypothetical proteins.     Work issues on Tomatec: tomato sustainable production system.

    Tomatec is a tomato sustainable production system. It encompasses a set of good practices on the crop. The main practices are: irrigation through waterdropping, fertilization within irrigation (ferti-irrigation), integrated pest control (which heavily reduces the use of pesticides), good soil handling with no-tillage cropping and use of contours for planting, use of tiny wires for supporting tomato trees (instead of bamboo logs) and the enveloping of the fruits with paper bags. Enveloping remains as one of the most important practices due to two factors: first, it is visible. Tomatec crops are easily recognized by people because of the white paper bags that involves all bunches, turning all plantation into white. The other reason is because enveloping is a very laborious process, and the key for having fruits free of pesticide residues. In order to assess the impacts of Tomatec, using the Ambitec method, we have conducted four interviews with Tomatec producers in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These interviews happened on 2019 September and took place in four municipalities: Tanguá, Nova Friburgo, Teresópolis and São Sebastião do Alto. Producers mention that farmworkers use individual protection equipment during their works. On field, we have seen hats and jackets. They mentioned that farmworkers also use masks for pesticides aspersion. Concerning to labour time, we have observed two main ways of contracting. Smaller producers usually work themselves in the fields. On harvest time, they contract many farmworkers, which are payed by numbers of day working. Bigger ones contract farmworkers by month and sign their workcard, paying the wages as well as the labour benefits, as disposed by Brazilian law. Another interesting finding about work on Tomatec is the genre division. All producers mentioned that pesticide sprinkle is exclusive to men, and enveloping is exclusive to women. It is not defined by rural producers: the farmworkers actually ask for that. Producers reported that farmworkers realize that sprinkling is a more painful and dangerous activity, with potential harms to fertility. Although Tomatec is recognised by strongly reducing the total amount of chemical products on the crop, men still want to save women from that kind of activity. On the other hand, enveloping is considered by farmworkers and producers a more delicate activity. It demands agility and precision to put on the paper bags on tomato flowers and to clip them, making the tomato fruits growing up inside the bags without receiving any drop of pesticide. Men are considered slower and less efficient than women to carry on this activity. So, analysing work issues on Tomatec we can see that the adoption of this production system have established many different strategies to deal with safety, law and genre issues

    Consumo de nutriente em cordeiros alimentados com torta de dendê.

    Objetivou-se determinar o nível ideal da torta de dendê na dieta, por intermédio de consumo. O experimento foi conduzido no aprisco da Escola de Medicina Veterinária da UFBA, Salvador-BA, com duração de 80 dias. Foram utilizados trinta e dois cordeiros de raça Santa Inês, com peso vivo inicial de aproximadamente 22 kg, entre quatro a seis meses de idade. Os tratamentos consistiram de quatro níveis (0; 6,5; 13,0 e 19,5%) de inclusão de torta de dendê na matéria seca da dieta. As dietas foram fornecidas duas vezes ao dia (ás 9 e 16 h), na forma de ração total, em quantidade ajustada para ocorrer 10 a 20% das sobras. Os consumos de matéria seca, de matéria orgânica, de proteína bruta e de carboidratos nãofibrosos seguiram comportamento linear decrescente com adição dos níveis de torta de dendê na dieta (p0,05)

    Discriminant analysis of pyrrolizidine alkaloid contamination in bee pollen based on near-infrared data from lab-stationary and portable spectrometers

    Bee pollen may be contaminated with pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their N-oxides (PANOs), which are mainly detected by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC\u2013MS/MS), even though the use of fast near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is an ongoing alternative. Therefore, the main challenge of this study was to assess the feasibility of both a lab-stationary (Foss) and a portable (Polispec) NIR spectrometer in 60 dehydrated bee pollen samples. After an ANOVA-feature selection of the most informative NIR spectral data, canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) was performed to distinguish three quantitative PA/PANO classes (\ub5g/kg): 400, high. According to the LC\u2013MS/MS analysis, 77% of the samples were contaminated with PAs/PANOs and the sum content of the 17 target analytes was higher than 400\ua0\ub5g/kg in 28% of the samples. CDA was carried out on a pool of 18 (Foss) and 22 (Polispec) selected spectral variables and allowed accurate classification of samples from the low class as confirmed by the high values of Matthews correlation coefficient ( 65 0.91) for both NIR spectrometers. Leave-one-out cross-validation highlighted precise recognition of samples characterised by a high PA/PANO content with a low misclassification rate (0.02) as false negatives. The most informative wavelengths were within the 2400\ua0nm regions for Foss and > 1500\ua0nm for Polispec that could be associated with cyclic amines, and epoxide chemical structures of PAs/PANOs. In sum, both lab-stationary and portable NIR systems are reliable and fast techniques for detecting PA/PANO contamination in bee pollen

    Características da carcaça de cordeiros submetidos a dietas com níveis de torta de dendê (Palmiste).

    O objetivo com esse experimento foi avaliar o melhor nível de torta de dendê na dieta por intermédio das características de carcaça de ovinos confinados. Trinta e dois cordeiros inteiros, Santa Inês, com em media 6 meses, e 22 kg PV foram utilizados. Os níveis de torta de dendê (0; 7; 14 e 21 % da matéria seca) foram adicionadas ao concentrado. Após 70 dias de confinamento os animais foram abatidos e as características de carcaças foram mensuradas. O peso vivo ao abate e peso do corpo vazio não foram influenciados pelos níveis de torta de dendê; o peso da carcaça quente
