    Like mother, like child : investigating perinatal and maternal health stress in post-medieval London.

    Post-Medieval London (sixteenth-nineteenth centuries) was a stressful environment for the poor. Overcrowded and squalid housing, physically demanding and risky working conditions, air and water pollution, inadequate diet and exposure to infectious diseases created high levels of morbidity and low life expectancy. All of these factors pressed with particular severity on the lowest members of the social strata, with burgeoning disparities in health between the richest and poorest. Foetal, perinatal and infant skeletal remains provide the most sensitive source of bioarchaeological information regarding past population health and in particular maternal well-being. This chapter examined the evidence for chronic growth and health disruption in 136 foetal, perinatal and infant skeletons from four low-status cemetery samples in post-medieval London. The aim of this study was to consider the impact of poverty on the maternal-infant nexus, through an analysis of evidence of growth disruption and pathological lesions. The results highlight the dire consequences of poverty in London during this period from the very earliest moments of life

    Sub-picosecond temporal resolution of anomalous Hall currents in GaAs

    Abstract The anomalous Hall (AH) and spin Hall effects are important tools for the generation, control, and detection of spin and spin-polarized currents in solids and, thus, hold promises for future spintronic applications. Despite tremendous work on these effects, their ultrafast dynamic response is still not well explored. Here, we induce ultrafast AH currents in a magnetically-biased semiconductor by optical femtosecond excitation at room temperature. The currents’ dynamics are studied by detecting the simultaneously emitted THz radiation. We show that the temporal shape of the AH currents can be extracted by comparing its THz radiation to the THz radiation emitted from optically induced currents whose temporal shape is well known. We observe a complex temporal shape of the AH currents suggesting that different microscopic origins contribute to the current dynamics. This is further confirmed by photon energy dependent measurements revealing a current inversion at low optical excitation intensities. Our work is a first step towards full time resolution of AH and spin Hall currents and helps to better understand the underlying microscopic origins, being a prerequisite for ultrafast spintronic applications using such currents

    Antigenic stimulation of the T cell receptor (TCR) initiates a change from a resting state into an activated one, which ultimately results in proliferation and the acquisition of effector functions. To accomplish this task, T cells require dramatic changes in metabolism. Therefore, we investigated changes of metabolic intermediates indicating for crucial metabolic pathways reflecting the status of T cells. Moreover we analyzed possible regulatory molecules required for the initiation of the metabolic changes
