Brain Differently Changes Its Algorithms in Parallel Processing of Visual Information
Feedback from the visual cortex (Vl) to the Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (LGN) in macaque monkey increase contrast gain of LGN neurons for black and white (B&W) and for color (C) stimuli. LGN parvocellular cells responses to B&W gratings are enhanced by feedback multiplicatively and in contrast independent manner. However, in magnocellular neurons corticofugal pathways enhance cells responses in a contrast~dependent non-linear manner. For C stimuli cortical feedback enhances parvocellular neurons responses in a very strong contrast-dependent manner. Based on these results [13] we propose a model which includes excitatory and inhibitory effects on cells activity (shunting equations) in retina and LGN while taking into account the anatomy of cortical feedback connections. The main mechanisms related to different algorithms of the data processing in the visual brain are differences in feedback properties from Vl to parvocellular (PC) and to magnocellular (MC) neurons. Descending pathways from Vl change differently receptive field (RF) structure of PC and MC cells. For B&W stimuli, in PC cells feedback changes gain similarly in the RF center and in the RF surround, leaving PC RF structure invariant. However, feedback influence MC cells in two ways: directly and through LGN interneurons, which together changes gain and sizes of their RF center differently than gain and size of the RF surround. For C stimuli PC cells operate like MC cells for B&W. The first mechanism extracts from the stimulus an important features in a independent way from other stimulus parameters, whereas the second channel changes its tuning properties as a function of other stimulus attributes like contrast and/or spatial extension. The model suggests novel idea about the possible functional role of PC and MC pathways
QCD axion and quintessential axion
The axion solution of the strong CP problem is reviewed together with the
other strong CP solutions. We also point out the quintessential
axion(quintaxion) whose potential can be extremely flat due to the tiny ratio
of the hidden sector quark mass and the intermediate hidden sector scale. The

Due to the Low Yield Stress of SCC, the Behaviour in Bends is Different, But Quite Complex to Study. Axion-Higgs Unification
In theories with no fundamental scalars, one gauge group can become strong at
a large scale Lambda and spontaneously break a global symmetry, producing the
Higgs and the axion as composite pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We show how
KSVZ and DFSZ axion models can be naturally realised. The assumption Lambda
around 10^{11} GeV is phenomenologically favoured because: a) The axion solves
the QCD theta problem and provides the observed DM abundance; b) The observed
Higgs mass is generated via RGE effects from a small Higgs quartic coupling at
the compositeness scale, provided that the Higgs mass term is fine-tuned to be
of electroweak size; c) Lepton, quark as well as neutrino masses can be
obtained from four-fermion operators at the compositeness scale. d) The extra

The experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS and of their direct informal caregivers in a resource-poor setting
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>HIV/AIDS is a critical concern in South Africa, where extreme poverty and gender issues are major determinants of health. A comprehensive home-based care programme is needed to lessen the burden placed on the caregivers of those suffering from HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the challenges faced by people who are living with HIV/AIDS and by their caregivers in resource-poor, remote South African villages.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In-depth interviews were conducted with nine persons living with HIV/AIDS and their nine direct informal caregivers. Interviews explored the themes of physical, emotional and social wellbeing. Two focus groups, one involving community leaders and one with local health care providers, were conducted to build on themes emerging from the in-depth interviews. A thematic analysis of the transcripts was performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This study sheds light on the needs of persons living with HIV/AIDS and the needs of their direct informal caregivers in a rural area of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. These needs include: physical/medical, social, material, financial, physiological/emotional, gender issues, and instrumental.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In developing home-based care programmes, it is vital to consider the perceived needs of persons living with HIV/AIDS and their direct informal caregivers. The results from this study serve as a basis for the development of a home-based care programme in one resource-poor setting of South Africa and could provide a model for such programmes in similar areas.</p

Stability Analysis of Frame Slotted Aloha Protocol
Frame Slotted Aloha (FSA) protocol has been widely applied in Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) systems as the de facto standard in tag identification.
However, very limited work has been done on the stability of FSA despite its
fundamental importance both on the theoretical characterisation of FSA
performance and its effective operation in practical systems. In order to
bridge this gap, we devote this paper to investigating the stability properties
of FSA by focusing on two physical layer models of practical importance, the
models with single packet reception and multipacket reception capabilities.
Technically, we model the FSA system backlog as a Markov chain with its states
being backlog size at the beginning of each frame. The objective is to analyze
the ergodicity of the Markov chain and demonstrate its properties in different
regions, particularly the instability region. By employing drift analysis, we
obtain the closed-form conditions for the stability of FSA and show that the
stability region is maximised when the frame length equals the backlog size in
the single packet reception model and when the ratio of the backlog size to
frame length equals in order of magnitude the maximum multipacket reception
capacity in the multipacket reception model. Furthermore, to characterise
system behavior in the instability region, we mathematically demonstrate the

Measuring the effect of intimate partner violence on health-related quality of life: a qualitative focus group study
Abstract
Background
Health related quality of life (HRQOL) can be measured by a wide range of instruments, many of which have been designed for specific conditions or uses. Preference-based measures assess the value individuals place on health, and are included in economic evaluations of treatments and interventions (such as cost effectiveness analysis). As economic evaluation becomes more common, it is important to assess the applicability of preference-based health related quality of life (HRQOL) measures to public health issues. This study investigated the usefulness of such instruments in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV), a public health concern that that can seriously affect quality of life.
Methods
The study consisted of focus groups with abused women to determine the aspects of life affected by IPV, and an analysis of existing HRQOL measures. Eight focus groups (n = 40) were conducted in which participants discussed the domains of health affected by IPV. Results were content analyzed and compared with the domains of health included in four commonly-used, preference-based HRQOL measures.
Results
The average focus group participant was 43 years old, unemployed, African American, with 3 children. Domains of health reported to be affected by IPV included physical functioning, emotional and psychological functioning, social functioning and children\u27s functioning. Psychological health was the most severely affected domain. The Short Form 36, the Health Utilities Index, the EuroQol 5D, and the Quality of Well-being Scale were found to vary in the degree to which they include domains of health important in IPV. Psychological health is included to a limited extent, and the spill-over effect of a condition on other family members, including children, is not included at all.
Conclusion
Emotional and psychological health plays an important role in the overall HRQOL of abused women but is relatively underemphasized in preference-based HRQOL measures. This may lead to an underestimation of the impact of partner violence on HRQOL when using these measures and in economic evaluations that rely thereon. Holistic measurement approaches or expanded measures that capture the far-reaching effects of IPV on HRQOL may be needed to accurately measure the effect of this condition on women\u27s health
New Experimental Limits on Macroscopic Forces Below 100 Microns
Results of an experimental search for new macroscopic forces with Yukawa
range between 5 and 500 microns are presented. The experiment uses 1 kHz
mechanical oscillators as test masses with a stiff conducting shield between
them to suppress backgrounds. No signal is observed above the instrumental
thermal noise after 22 hours of integration time. These results provide the
strongest limits to date between 10 and 100 microns, improve on previous limits
by as much as three orders of magnitude, and rule out half of the remaining
parameter space for predictions of string-inspired models with low-energy
supersymmetry breaking. New forces of four times gravitational strength or
greater are excluded at the 95% confidence level for interaction ranges between
