Supervisory Control Theory in System Safety Analysis
Development of safety critical systems requires a risk management strategy to identify and analyse hazards, and apply necessary actions to eliminate or control them as malfunctions could be catastrophic. Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) is one of the most widely used methods for safety analysis in industrial use. However, the standard FTA is manual, informal, and limited to static analysis of systems. In this paper, we present preliminary results from a model-based approach to address these limitations using Supervisory Control Theory. Taking an example from the Fault Tree Handbook, we present a systematic approach to incrementally obtain formal models from a fault tree and verify them in the tool Supremica. We present a method to calculate minimal cut sets using our approach. These compositional techniques could potentially be very beneficial in the safety analysis of highly complex safety critical systems, where several components interact to solve different tasks
Visualizing dimensionality reduction of systems biology data
One of the challenges in analyzing high-dimensional expression data is the
detection of important biological signals. A common approach is to apply a
dimension reduction method, such as principal component analysis. Typically,
after application of such a method the data is projected and visualized in the
new coordinate system, using scatter plots or profile plots. These methods
provide good results if the data have certain properties which become visible
in the new coordinate system and which were hard to detect in the original
coordinate system. Often however, the application of only one method does not
suffice to capture all important signals. Therefore several methods addressing
different aspects of the data need to be applied. We have developed a framework
for linear and non-linear dimension reduction methods within our visual
analytics pipeline SpRay. This includes measures that assist the interpretation
of the factorization result. Different visualizations of these measures can be
combined with functional annotations that support the interpretation of the
results. We show an application to high-resolution time series microarray data
in the antibiotic-producing organism Streptomyces coelicolor as well as to
microarray data measuring expression of cells with normal karyotype and cells
with trisomies of human chromosomes 13 and 21
Orbifold equivalence for finite density QCD and effective field theory
In the large N_c limit, some apparently different gauge theories turn out to
be equivalent due to large N_c orbifold equivalence. We use effective field
theory techniques to explore orbifold equivalence, focusing on the specific
case of a recently discovered relation between an SO(2N_c) gauge theory and
QCD. The equivalence to QCD has been argued to hold at finite baryon chemical
potential, \mu_B, so long as one deforms the SO(2N_c) theory by certain
"double-trace" terms. The deformed SO(2N_c) theory can be studied without a
sign problem in the chiral limit, in contrast to SU(N_c) QCD at finite \mu_B.
The purpose of the double-trace deformation in the SO(2N_c) theory is to
prevent baryon number symmetry from breaking spontaneously at finite density,
which is necessary for the equivalence to large N_c QCD to be valid. The
effective field theory analysis presented here clarifies the physical
significance of double-trace deformations, and strongly supports the proposed
equivalence between the deformed SO(2N_c) theory and large N_c QCD at finite

Sprint start kinetics of amputee and non-amputee sprinters
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the forces applied to the starting blocks and the start performances (SPs) of amputee sprinters (ASs) and non-amputee sprinters (NASs). SPs of 154 male and female NASs (100-m personal records [PRs], 9.58–14.00 s) and 7 male ASs (3 unilateral above knee, 3 unilateral below knee, 1 bilateral below knee; 100 m PRs, 11.70–12.70 s) with running specific prostheses (RSPs) were analysed during full-effort sprint starts using instrumented starting blocks that measured the applied forces in 3D. Using the NAS dataset and a combination of factor analysis and multiple regression techniques, we explored the relationship between force characteristics and SP (quantified by normalized average horizontal block power). Start kinetics were subsequently compared between ASs and NASs who were matched based on their absolute 100 m PR and their 100 m PR relative to the world record in their starting class. In NASs, 86% of the variance in SP was shared with five latent factors on which measured parameters related to force application to the rear and front blocks and the respective push-off directions in the sagittal plane of motion were loaded. Mediolateral force application had little influence on SP. The SP of ASs was significantly reduced compared to that of NASs matched on the basis of relative 100-m PR (−33.8%; d = 2.11, p < 0.001), while a non-significant performance reduction was observed when absolute 100-m PRs were used (−17.7%; d = 0.79, p = 0.09). These results are at least partially explained by the fact that force application to the rear block was clearly impaired in the affected legs of ASs

Physician–Patient Communication About Prescription Medication Nonadherence: A 50-state Study of America’s Seniors
CONTEXT: Understanding and improving the quality of medication management is particularly important in the context of the Medicare prescription drug benefit that took effect last January 2006. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of physician–patient dialogue about medication cost and medication adherence among elderly adults nationwide. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. PARTICIPANTS: National stratified random sample of community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Rates of physician–patient dialogue about nonadherence and cost-related medication switching. RESULTS: Forty-one percent of seniors reported taking five or more prescription medications, and more than half has 2 or more prescribing physicians. Thirty-two percent overall and 24% of those with 3 or more chronic conditions reported not having talked with their doctor about all their different medicines in the last 12 months. Of seniors reporting skipping doses or stopping a medication because of side effects or perceived nonefficacy, 27% had not talked with a physician about it. Of those reporting cost-related nonadherence, 39% had not talked with a physician about it. Thirty-eight percent of those with cost-related nonadherence reported switching to a lower priced drug, and in a multivariable model, having had a discussion about drug cost was significantly associated with this switch (odds ratio [OR] 5.04, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.28–5.93, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: We show that there is a communication gap between seniors and their physicians around prescription medications. This communication problem is an important quality and safety issue, and takes on added salience as physicians and patients confront new challenges associated with coverage under new Medicare prescription drug plans. Meeting these challenges will require that more attention be devoted to medication management during all clinical encounters

Risk measures for direct real estate investments with non-normal or unknown return distributions
The volatility of returns is probably the most widely used risk measure for real estate. This is rather surprising since a number of studies have cast doubts on the view that volatility can capture the manifold risks attached to properties and corresponds to the risk attitude of investors. A central issue in this discussion is the statistical properties of real estate returns—in contrast to neoclassical capital market theory they are mostly non-normal and often unknown, which render many statistical measures useless. Based on a literature review and an analysis of data from Germany we provide evidence that volatility alone is inappropriate for measuring the risk of direct real estate.
We use a unique data sample by IPD, which includes the total returns of 939 properties across different usage types (56% office, 20% retail, 8% others and 16% residential properties) from 1996 to 2009, the German IPD Index, and the German Property Index. The analysis of the distributional characteristics shows that German real estate returns in this period were not normally distributed and that a logistic distribution would have been a better fit. This is in line with most of the current literature on this subject and leads to the question which indicators are more appropriate to measure real estate risks. We suggest that a combination of quantitative and qualitative risk measures more adequately captures real estate risks and conforms better with investor attitudes to risk. Adolescent brain maturation and cortical folding: evidence for reductions in gyrification
Evidence from anatomical and functional imaging studies have highlighted major modifications of cortical circuits during adolescence. These include reductions of gray matter (GM), increases in the myelination of cortico-cortical connections and changes in the architecture of large-scale cortical networks. It is currently unclear, however, how the ongoing developmental processes impact upon the folding of the cerebral cortex and how changes in gyrification relate to maturation of GM/WM-volume, thickness and surface area. In the current study, we acquired high-resolution (3 Tesla) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 79 healthy subjects (34 males and 45 females) between the ages of 12 and 23 years and performed whole brain analysis of cortical folding patterns with the gyrification index (GI). In addition to GI-values, we obtained estimates of cortical thickness, surface area, GM and white matter (WM) volume which permitted correlations with changes in gyrification. Our data show pronounced and widespread reductions in GI-values during adolescence in several cortical regions which include precentral, temporal and frontal areas. Decreases in gyrification overlap only partially with changes in the thickness, volume and surface of GM and were characterized overall by a linear developmental trajectory. Our data suggest that the observed reductions in GI-values represent an additional, important modification of the cerebral cortex during late brain maturation which may be related to cognitive development
