Musical Multimodal Child Computer Interaction
In this project an interactive computer system is designed that envisions to contribute to young children's musical education. From literature, requirements for musical interaction were derived. In this paper these requirements and the design of the system are described
Vegetation and macrofungi of acid oakwoods in the north-east of the Netherlands
The book describes the fungal, phanerogamic, moss and lichen vegetation, soil profiles and soil chemistry in the ecological associations Dicrano-Quercetum, Querco-Betuletum, VioloQuercetum and its subassociation ilicetosum (subass. nov.) in the Province of Drenthe in the Netherlands. New methods were used in estimation of chemical composition of soil ions expressed as mass concentration and as total ion supply and of vegetation, which was recorded separately for the moss and lichen vegetation of rotten wood, and in recording fungal vegetation (spatial frequency in subplots of 25 m2). Spatial frequency was used in estimating the abundance of mycelia for each species, uniformity of plots, pattern of species, and correlations between species. Based on the association, Querco-Betuletum and Violo-Quercetum were closely related, and both belonged to the alliance Quercion roboripetraeae. Dicrano-Quercetum was less related, and did not belong to the same alliance. In the soil, there were differences between the syntaxa in the profiles and in 'total' available ions. The syntaxa had many differential fungal species, which supported conclusions about affinities based on associations of higher plants. Distribution patterns of fungal species within plots are discussed. Notes are included on identification and taxonomy of fungi, including a newly described one, Psathyrella fulvescens var. dicrani
The vegetation and macrofungi of acid oakwoods in the North-East Netherlands
The fungus vegetation, the vegetation of phanerogams, mosses, and lichens, the soilprofiles are described and soil chemical analyses are made in the associations Dicrano-Quercetum, Querco-Betuletum, Violo- Quercetum, and its sub-association ilicetosum (sub-ass. nov.) in the province of Drenthe (NorthEast Netherlands). New methods are applied in the soil chemical analysis(amount of ions expressed in mass concentration, calculation of total ion supply), in the vegetation analysis (separate analysis of the moss synusia on rotten tree stumps and dead wood), and in the mycosociological analysis (determination of spatial frequency). The last-named method is used for the determination or estimation of the abundance of the mycelia per species, of the plot homogeneity, of the pattern of the species, and of the correlation between species. Based on the phytocoenose the Querco-Betuletum and the Violo-Quercetum appeared to be closely related, and to belong to the alliance Quercion robori-petraeae. It was confirmed that the Dicrano-Quercetum is less related, and did not belong to this alliance. In the soil there are differences between the syntaxa in the profiles and in the 'total ion supply'. The syntaxa have many differential species among the fungi in a way to support the concepts on the affinities based on the phytocoenoses. The 'minimal area' of the fungus vegetation was determined. Distribution patterns of fungus species within plots are discussed. Annotations on identifaction and taxonomy of fungi are given; a new fungus taxon is described:Psathyrellafulvescens var. dicrani .<p/

First principles calculation of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction in strained CMR films
We performed first - principles relativistic full-potential linearized
augmented plane wave calculations for strained tetragonal ferromagnetic
La(Ba)MnO with an assumed experimental structure of thin strained
tetragonal LaCaMnO (LCMO) films grown on SrTiO[001]
and LaAlO[001] substrates. The calculated uniaxial magnetic anisotropy
energy (MAE) values, are in good quantitative agreement with experiment for
LCMO films on SrTiO substrate. We also analyze the applicability of linear
magnetoelastic theory for describing the stain dependence of MAE, and estimate
magnetostriction coefficient .Comment: Talk given at APS99 Meeting, Atlanta, 199
Surface and sub-surface multi-proxy reconstruction of middle to late Holocene palaeoceanographic changes in Disko Bugt, West Greenland
We present new surface water proxy records of meltwater production (alkenone derived), relative sea surface temperature (diatom, alkenones) and sea ice (diatoms) changes from the Disko Bugt area off central West Greenland. We combine these new surface water reconstructions with published proxy records (benthic foraminifera - bottom water proxy; dinocyst assemblages – surface water proxy), along with atmospheric temperature from Greenland ice core and Greenland lake records. This multi-proxy approach allows us to reconstruct centennial scale middle to late Holocene palaeoenvironmental evolution of Disko Bugt and the Western Greenland coastal region with more detail than previously available. Combining surface and bottom water proxies identifies the coupling between ocean circulation (West Greenland Current conditions), the atmosphere and the Greenland Ice Sheet. Centennial to millennial scale changes in the wider North Atlantic region were accompanied by variations in the West Greenland Current (WGC). During periods of relatively warm WGC, increased surface air temperature over western Greenland led to ice sheet retreat and significant meltwater flux. In contrast, during periods of cold WGC, atmospheric cooling resulted in glacier advances. We also identify potential linkages between the palaeoceanography of the Disko Bugt region and key changes in the history of human occupation. Cooler oceanographic conditions at 3.5 ka BP support the view that the Saqqaq culture left Disko Bugt due to deteriorating climatic conditions. The cause of the disappearance of the Dorset culture is unclear, but the new data presented here indicate that it may be linked to a significant increase in meltwater flux, which caused cold and unstable coastal conditions at ca. 2 ka BP. The subsequent settlement of the Norse occurred at the same time as climatic amelioration during the Medieval Climate Anomaly and their disappearance may be related to harsher conditions at the beginning of the Little Ice Age
Electronic patient-reported outcomes monitoring during lung cancer chemotherapy: A nested cohort within the PRO-TECT pragmatic trial (AFT-39)
Objectives: Patients with lung cancer have high symptom burden and diminished quality of life. Electronic patient-reported outcome (PRO) platforms deliver repeated longitudinal surveys via web or telephone to patients and alert clinicians about concerning symptoms. This study aims to determine feasibility of electronic PRO monitoring in lung cancer patients receiving treatment in community settings. Methods: Adults receiving treatment for advanced or metastatic lung cancer at 26 community sites were invited to participate in a prospective trial of weekly electronic PRO symptom monitoring for 12 months (NCT03249090). Surveys assessing patients’ satisfaction with the electronic PRO system were administered at 3 months. Descriptive statistics were generated for demographics, survey completion rates, symptom occurrence, and provider PRO alert management approaches. Pairwise relationships between symptom items were evaluated using intra-individual repeated-measures correlation coefficients. Results: Lung cancer patients (n = 118) participating in electronic PROs were older (mean 64.4 vs 61.9 years, p = 0.03), had worse performance status (p = 0.002), more comorbidities (p = 0.02), and less technology experience than patients with other cancers. Of delivered weekly PRO surveys over 12 months, 91% were completed. Nearly all (97%) patients reported concerning (i.e., severe or worsening) symptoms during participation, with 33% of surveys including concerning symptoms. Pain was the most frequent and longest lasting symptom and was associated with reduced activity level. More than half of alerts to clinicians for concerning symptoms led to intervention. The majority (87%) would recommend using electronic PRO monitoring to other lung cancer patients. Conclusions: Remote longitudinal weekly monitoring of patients with lung cancer using validated electronic PRO surveys was feasible in a multicenter, community-based pragmatic study. A high symptom burden specific to lung cancer was detected and clinician outreach in response to alerts was frequent, suggesting electronic PROs may be a beneficial strategy for identifying actionable symptoms and allow opportunities to optimize well-being in this population
Mixing-induced CP violating sources for electroweak baryogenesis from a semiclassical approach
The effects of flavor mixing in electroweak baryogenesis is investigated in a
generalized semiclassical WKB approach. Through calculating the nonadiabatic
corrections to the particle currents it is shown that extra CP violation
sources arise from the off-diagonal part of the equation of motion of particles
moving inside the bubble wall. This type of mixing-induced source is of the
first order in derivative expansion of the Higgs condensate, but is oscillation
suppressed. The numerical importance of the mixing-induced source is discussed
in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and compared with the source term
induced by semiclassical force. It is found that in a large parameter space
where oscillation suppression is not strong enough, the mixing-induced source
can dominate over that from the semiclassical force.Comment: 19 pp, 2 figs, 1 table, some comments added, to appear in
