Group theoretical approach to quantum fields in de Sitter space I. The principal series
Using unitary irreducible representations of the de Sitter group, we
construct the Fock space of a massive free scalar field.
In this approach, the vacuum is the unique dS invariant state. The quantum
field is a posteriori defined by an operator subject to covariant
transformations under the dS isometry group. This insures that it obeys
canonical commutation relations, up to an overall factor which should not
vanish as it fixes the value of hbar. However, contrary to what is obtained for
the Poincare group, the covariance condition leaves an arbitrariness in the
definition of the field. This arbitrariness allows to recover the amplitudes
governing spontaneous pair creation processes, as well as the class of alpha
vacua obtained in the usual field theoretical approach. The two approaches can
be formally related by introducing a squeezing operator which acts on the state
in the field theoretical description and on the operator in the present
treatment. The choice of the different dS invariant schemes (different alpha
vacua) is here posed in very simple terms: it is related to a first order
differential equation which is singular on the horizon and whose general
solution is therefore characterized by the amplitude on either side of the
horizon. Our algebraic approach offers a new method to define quantum field
theory on some deformations of dS space.Comment: 35 pages, 2 figures ; Corrected typo, Changed referenc
A 4% Geometric Distance to the Galaxy NGC4258 from Orbital Motions in a Nuclear Gas Disk
The water maser in the mildly active nucleus in the nearby galaxy NGC4258
traces a thin, nearly edge-on, subparsec-scale Keplerian disk. Using the
technique of very long baseline interferometry, we have detected the proper
motions of these masers as they sweep in front of the central black hole at an
orbital velocity of about 1100 km/s. The average maser proper motion of 31.5
microarcseconds per year is used in conjunction with the observed acceleration
of the masers to derive a purely geometric distance to the galaxy of 7.2 +- 0.3
Mpc. This is the most precise extragalactic distance measured to date, and,
being independent of all other distance indicators, is likely to play an
important role in calibrating the extragalactic distance scale.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Natur
The Seroepidemiology of Haemophilus influenzae Type B Prior to Introduction of an Immunization Programme in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is now recognized as an important pathogen in Asia. To evaluate disease susceptibility, and as a marker of Hib transmission before routine immunization was introduced in Kathmandu, 71 participants aged 7 months-77 years were recruited and 15 cord blood samples were collected for analysis of anti-polyribosylribitol phosphate antibody levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Only 20% of children under 5 years old had levels considered protective (>0.15 µg/ml), rising to 83% of 15-54 year-olds. Prior to introduction of Hib vaccine in Kathmandu, the majority of young children were susceptible to disease
A catalog of Kazarian galaxies
The entire Kazarian galaxies (KG) catalog is presented which combines
extensive new measurements of their optical parameters with a literature and
database search. The measurements were made using images extracted from the
STScI Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) of Jpg(blue), Fpg(red) and Ipg(NIR) band
photographic sky survey plates obtained by the Palomar and UK Schmidt
telescopes. We provide accurate coordinates, morphological type, spectral and
activity classes, blue apparent diameters, axial ratios, position angles, red,
blue and NIR apparent magnitudes, as well as counts of neighboring objects in a
circle of radius 50 kpc from centers of KG. Special attention was paid to the
individual descriptions of the galaxies in the original Kazarian lists, which
clarified many cases of misidentifications of the objects, particularly among
interacting systems. The total number of individual Kazarian objects in the
database is now 706. We also include the redshifts which are now available for
404 galaxies and the 2MASS infrared magnitudes for 598 KG. The database also
includes extensive notes, which summarize information about the membership of
KG in different systems of galaxies, and about revised activity classes and
redshifts. An atlas of several interesting subclasses of KG is also presented.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, Accepted in Astrophysics, Vol. 53, No.

Characteristic Energy of the Coulomb Interactions and the Pileup of States
Tunneling data on crystals confirm
Coulomb interaction effects through the dependence of the
density of states. Importantly, the data and analysis at high energy, E, show a
pileup of states: most of the states removed from near the Fermi level are
found between ~40 and 130 meV, from which we infer the possibility of universal
behavior. The agreement of our tunneling data with recent photoemission results
further confirms our analysis.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR
Fuzzy Scalar Field Theory as Matrix Quantum Mechanics
We study the phase diagram of scalar field theory on a three dimensional
Euclidean spacetime whose spatial component is a fuzzy sphere. The
corresponding model is an ordinary one-dimensional matrix model deformed by
terms involving fixed external matrices. These terms can be approximated by
multitrace expressions using a group theoretical method developed recently. The
resulting matrix model is accessible to the standard techniques of matrix
quantum mechanics.Comment: 1+17 pages, 4 figures, minor improvements, version published in JHE
Bright spots, physical activity investments that work : sweatcoin : a steps generated virtual currency for sustained physical activity behaviour change
Sweatcoin converts the step count recorded on smartphones into a virtual currency. Using this app, users generate financial rewards through physical activity, with higher levels of activity creating a higher ‘income’. Sweatcoins can subsequently be used to purchase commercially available products from an in-app marketplace
Hawking emission from quantum gravity black holes
We address the issue of modelling quantum gravity effects in the evaporation
of higher dimensional black holes in order to go beyond the usual
semi-classical approximation. After reviewing the existing six families of
quantum gravity corrected black hole geometries, we focus our work on
non-commutative geometry inspired black holes, which encode model independent
characteristics, are unaffected by the quantum back reaction and have an
analytical form compact enough for numerical simulations. We consider the
higher dimensional, spherically symmetric case and we proceed with a complete
analysis of the brane/bulk emission for scalar fields. The key feature which
makes the evaporation of non-commutative black holes so peculiar is the
possibility of having a maximum temperature. Contrary to what happens with
classical Schwarzschild black holes, the emission is dominated by low frequency
field modes on the brane. This is a distinctive and potentially testable
signature which might disclose further features about the nature of quantum
gravity.Comment: 36 pages, 18 figures, v2: updated reference list, minor corrections,

The Second Byurakan Survey Galaxies. I. The Optical Database
A database for the entire catalog of the Second Byurakan Survey (SBS)
galaxies is presented. It contains new measurements of their optical parameters
and additional information taken from the literature and other databases. The
measurements were made using Ipg(near-infrared), Fpg(red) and Jpg(blue) band
images from photographic sky survey plates obtained by the Palomar Schmidt
telescope and extracted from the STScI Digital Sky Survey (DSS). The database
provides accurate coordinates, morphological type, spectral and activity
classes, apparent magnitudes and diameters, axial ratios, and position angles,
as well as number counts of neighboring objects in a circle of radius 50 kpc.
The total number of individual SBS objects in the database is now 1676. The 188
Markarian galaxies which were re-discovered by SBS are not included in this
database. We also include redshifts that are now available for 1576 SBS
objects, as well as 2MASS infrared magnitudes for 1117 SBS galaxies.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, 1 tabl
The influence of tumor size and environment on gene expression in commonly used human tumor lines
BACKGROUND: The expression profiles of solid tumor models in rodents have been only minimally studied despite their extensive use to develop anticancer agents. We have applied RNA expression profiling using Affymetrix U95A GeneChips to address fundamental biological questions about human tumor lines. METHODS: To determine whether gene expression changed significantly as a tumor increased in size, we analyzed samples from two human colon carcinoma lines (Colo205 and HCT-116) at three different sizes (200 mg, 500 mg and 1000 mg). To investigate whether gene expression was influenced by the strain of mouse, tumor samples isolated from C.B-17 SCID and Nu/Nu mice were also compared. Finally, the gene expression differences between tissue culture and in vivo samples were investigated by comparing profiles from lines grown in both environments. RESULTS: Multidimensional scaling and analysis of variance demonstrated that the tumor lines were dramatically different from each other and that gene expression remained constant as the tumors increased in size. Statistical analysis revealed that 63 genes were differentially expressed due to the strain of mouse the tumor was grown in but the function of the encoded proteins did not link to any distinct biological pathways. Hierarchical clustering of tissue culture and xenograft samples demonstrated that for each individual tumor line, the in vivo and in vitro profiles were more similar to each other than any other profile. We identified 36 genes with a pattern of high expression in xenograft samples that encoded proteins involved in extracellular matrix, cell surface receptors and transcription factors. An additional 17 genes were identified with a pattern of high expression in tissue culture samples and encoded proteins involved in cell division, cell cycle and RNA production. CONCLUSIONS: The environment a tumor line is grown in can have a significant effect on gene expression but tumor size has little or no effect for subcutaneously grown solid tumors. Furthermore, an individual tumor line has an RNA expression pattern that clearly defines it from other lines even when grown in different environments. This could be used as a quality control tool for preclinical oncology studies
