Longitudinal associations between keeping a secret and psychosocial adjustment in adolescence
Increasing bodies of evidence suggest that keeping secrets may be detrimental to well-being and adjustment, whereas confiding secrets may alleviate the detriments of secrecy and benefit well-being and adjustment. However, few studies have addressed the consequences of keeping and confiding secrets simultaneously, and even fewer have done so longitudinally. This article reports on a two-wave longitudinal survey study among 278 adolescents (aged 13-18 years) that examined the associations of keeping and confiding a specific secret with psychosocial adjustment. Results confirmed a hypothesized longitudinal contribution of keeping a secret all to oneself to psychosocial problems, including depressive mood, low self-concept clarity, low self-control, loneliness, and poor relationship quality. Furthermore, confiding versus continuing to keep a secret all to oneself was associated with decreased psychosocial problems after six months, whereas starting to keep a secret versus not doing so was associated with increased psychosocial problems. These results suggest that the keeping or confiding of secrets may affect adolescents' psychosocial well-being and adjustment. © 2008 The International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development
A Laser Frequency Comb System for Absolute Calibration of the VTT Echelle Spectrograph
A wavelength calibration system based on a laser frequency comb (LFC) was
developed in a co-operation between the Kiepenheuer-Institut f\"ur
Sonnenphysik, Freiburg, Germany and the Max-Planck-Institut f\"ur Quantenoptik,
Garching, Germany for permanent installation at the German Vacuum Tower
Telescope (VTT) on Tenerife, Canary Islands. The system was installed
successfully in October 2011. By simultaneously recording the spectra from the
Sun and the LFC, for each exposure a calibration curve can be derived from the
known frequencies of the comb modes that is suitable for absolute calibration
at the meters per second level. We briefly summarize some topics in solar
physics that benefit from absolute spectroscopy and point out the advantages of
LFC compared to traditional calibration techniques. We also sketch the basic
setup of the VTT calibration system and its integration with the existing
echelle spectrograph.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures; Solar Physics 277 (2012
Homocysteine in dogs with systemic inflammatory response syndrome
OBJECTIVES - To compare serum concentrations of homocysteine (Hcy) in dogs fitting
the criteria for the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and healthy dogs,
and compare these values to commonly measured B-vitamins.
METHODS – Study dogs were classified into noninfectious SIRS or sepsis groups and
blood was drawn on Day 1 of the patient’s hospitalization for the measurement of Hcy,
folate and cobalamin concentrations. Hcy was measured in 51 clinically normal dogs to
serve as the control group.
RESULTS - A statistically significant difference was found between the Hcy
concentrations of the healthy group when compared to noninfectious SIRS and sepsis
groups. Hcy values were not correlated with folate, cobalamin or APPLEfast severity
scores. Hcy concentrations were significantly lower in sick dogs when compared to the
control group, which is dissimilar to the human population.
CLINICAL SIGNIFCANCE - The clinical significance of Hcy changes in critically ill dogs is
currently unknown.http://aac.asm.orghb2014ab201
Generalized pricing formulas for stochastic volatility jump diffusion models applied to the exponential Vasicek model
Path integral techniques for the pricing of financial options are mostly
based on models that can be recast in terms of a Fokker-Planck differential
equation and that, consequently, neglect jumps and only describe drift and
diffusion. We present a method to adapt formulas for both the path-integral
propagators and the option prices themselves, so that jump processes are taken
into account in conjunction with the usual drift and diffusion terms. In
particular, we focus on stochastic volatility models, such as the exponential
Vasicek model, and extend the pricing formulas and propagator of this model to
incorporate jump diffusion with a given jump size distribution. This model is
of importance to include non-Gaussian fluctuations beyond the Black-Scholes
model, and moreover yields a lognormal distribution of the volatilities, in
agreement with results from superstatistical analysis. The results obtained in
the present formalism are checked with Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, 1 tabl
Improving trading saystems using the RSI financial indicator and neural networks.
Proceedings of: 11th International Workshop on Knowledge Management and Acquisition for
Smart Systems and Services (PKAW 2010), 20 August-3 September 2010, Daegu (Korea)Trading and Stock Behavioral Analysis Systems require efficient Artificial Intelligence techniques for analyzing Large Financial Datasets (LFD) and have become in the current economic landscape a significant challenge for multi-disciplinary research. Particularly, Trading-oriented Decision Support Systems based on the Chartist or Technical Analysis Relative Strength Indicator (RSI) have been published and used worldwide. However, its combination with Neural Networks as a branch of computational intelligence which can outperform previous results remain a relevant approach which has not deserved enough attention. In this paper, we present the Chartist Analysis Platform for Trading (CAST, in short) platform, a proof-of-concept architecture and implementation of a Trading Decision Support System based on the RSI and Feed-Forward Neural Networks (FFNN). CAST provides a set of relatively more accurate financial decisions yielded by the combination of Artificial Intelligence techniques to the RSI calculation and a more precise and improved upshot obtained from feed-forward algorithms application to stock value datasets. This work is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Industry,

Hot Spots and Transition from d-Wave to Another Pairing Symmetry in the Electron-Doped Cuprate Superconductors
We present a simple theoretical explanation for a transition from d-wave to
another superconducting pairing observed in the electron-doped cuprates. The
d_{x^2-y^2} pairing potential Delta, which has the maximal magnitude and
opposite signs at the hot spots on the Fermi surface, becomes suppressed with
the increase of electron doping, because the hot spots approach the Brillouin
zone diagonals, where Delta vanishes. Then, the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing is replaced
by either singlet s-wave or triplet p-wave pairing. We argue in favor of the
latter and discuss experiments to uncover it.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX 4. V.2: Extra figure and many references

Supermassive Binaries and Extragalactic Jets
Some quasars show Doppler shifted broad emission line peaks. I give new
statistics of the occurrence of these peaks and show that, while the most
spectacular cases are in quasars with strong radio jets inclined to the line of
sight, they are also almost as common in radio-quiet quasars. Theories of the
origin of the peaks are reviewed and it is argued that the displaced peaks are
most likely produced by the supermassive binary model. The separations of the
peaks in the 3C 390.3-type objects are consistent with orientation-dependent
"unified models" of quasar activity. If the supermassive binary model is
correct, all members of "the jet set" (astrophysical objects showing jets)
could be binaries.Comment: 31 pages, PostScript, missing figure is in ApJ 464, L105 (see

Modification of Experimental Protocols for a Space Shuttle Flight and Applications for the Analysis of Cytoskeletal Structures During Fertilization, Cell Division , and Development in Sea Urchin Embryos
To explore the role of microgravity on cytoskeletal organization and skeletal calcium deposition during fertilization, cell division, and early development, the sea urchin was chosen as a model developmental system. Methods were developed to employ light, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy on cultures being prepared for flight on the Space Shuttle. For analysis of microfilaments, microtubules, centrosomes, and calcium-requiring events, our standard laboratory protocols had to be modified substantially for experimentation on the Space Shuttle. All manipulations were carried out in a closed culture chamber containing 35 ml artificial sea water as a culture fluid. Unfertilized eggs stored for 24 hours in these chambers were fertilized with sperm diluted in sea water and fixed with concentrated fixatives for final fixation in formaldehyde, taxol, EGTA, and MgCl2(exp -6)H2O for 1 cell to 16 cell stages to preserve cytoskeletal structures for simultaneous analysis with light, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy, and 1.5 percent glutaraldehyde and 0.4 percent formaldehyde for blastula and plueus stages. The fixed samples wre maintained in chambers without degradation for up to two weeks after which the specimens were processed and analyzed with routine methods. Since complex manipulations are not possible in the closed chambers, the fertilization coat was removed from fixation using 0.5 percent freshly prepared sodium thioglycolate solution at pH 10.0 which provided reliable immunofluorescence staining for microtubules. Sperm/egg fusion, mitosis, cytokinesis, and calcium deposition during spicule formatin in early embryogenesis were found to be without artificial alterations when compared to cells fixed fresh and processed with conventional methods
