Overcoming intrinsic spin resonance by using an AC dipole
Depolarization from an intrinsic spin resonance can be avoided by adiabatically exciting a coherent betatron oscillation. Sustained coherent transverse beam oscillations have been achieved in the AGS using a high frequency AC driven dipole magnet. The amplitude of the oscillations using the present system has been as large as 2.6 times the rms beam size, and the oscillations were held at this level for over 1,000 revolutions. By adiabatically increasing and decreasing the dipole field amplitude during this procedure, the transverse emittance of the beam was left unaffected. To set the scale, had an oscillation of that amplitude been left to oscillate freely, the beam emittance would have increased by a factor of 7 after filamentation. This result provides encouragement that this technique can be used to induce spin flip of polarized proton beams in synchrotrons when crossing strong intrinsic depolarizing resonances during acceleration. Another application of this device in a polarized beams storage ring would be the reversal of the polarized beams storage ring would be the reversal of the polarization direction of the beam. By slowly sweeping the frequency of the modulated dipole field through the spin precession frequency of the storage ring, an adiabatic spin flip can be induced, thus reversing the polarization direction of each individual particle in the storage ring without increasing the beam emittance. This can be useful for reducing systematic errors in polarized beam experiments
Local Eigenvalue Density for General MANOVA Matrices
We consider random n\times n matrices of the form
(XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}YY*(XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}, where X and Y have independent entries
with zero mean and variance one. These matrices are the natural generalization
of the Gaussian case, which are known as MANOVA matrices and which have joint
eigenvalue density given by the third classical ensemble, the Jacobi ensemble.
We show that, away from the spectral edge, the eigenvalue density converges to
the limiting density of the Jacobi ensemble even on the shortest possible
scales of order 1/n (up to \log n factors). This result is the analogue of the
local Wigner semicircle law and the local Marchenko-Pastur law for general

Circular Law Theorem for Random Markov Matrices
Consider an nxn random matrix X with i.i.d. nonnegative entries with bounded
density, mean m, and finite positive variance sigma^2. Let M be the nxn random
Markov matrix with i.i.d. rows obtained from X by dividing each row of X by its
sum. In particular, when X11 follows an exponential law, then M belongs to the
Dirichlet Markov Ensemble of random stochastic matrices. Our main result states
that with probability one, the counting probability measure of the complex
spectrum of n^(1/2)M converges weakly as n tends to infinity to the uniform law
on the centered disk of radius sigma/m. The bounded density assumption is
purely technical and comes from the way we control the operator norm of the

A Measurement of Psi(2S) Resonance Parameters
Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been
measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector
operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons,
pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined
to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)=
(2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)=
(97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%,

Measurements of the Mass and Full-Width of the Meson
In a sample of 58 million events collected with the BES II detector,
the process J/ is observed in five different decay
channels: , , (with ), (with
) and . From a combined fit of all five
channels, we determine the mass and full-width of to be

A study of charged kappa in
Based on events collected by BESII, the decay
is studied. In the invariant mass
spectrum recoiling against the charged , the charged
particle is found as a low mass enhancement. If a Breit-Wigner function of
constant width is used to parameterize the kappa, its pole locates at MeV/. Also in this channel,
the decay is observed for the first time.

Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadrons containing at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV
By analyzing the data sets of 17.3, 6.5 and 1.0 pb taken,
respectively, at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV with the BES-II
detector at the BEPC collider, we measure the observed cross sections for
, , ,
and at the three energy
points. Based on these cross sections we set the upper limits on the observed
cross sections and the branching fractions for decay into these

The Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus Resistance Genes Ty-1 and Ty-3 Are Allelic and Code for DFDGD-Class RNA–Dependent RNA Polymerases
Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus Disease incited by Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) causes huge losses in tomato production worldwide and is caused by different related begomovirus species. Breeding for TYLCV resistance has been based on the introgression of multiple resistance genes originating from several wild tomato species. In this study we have fine-mapped the widely used Solanum chilense–derived Ty-1 and Ty-3 genes by screening nearly 12,000 plants for recombination events and generating recombinant inbred lines. Multiple molecular markers were developed and used in combination with disease tests to fine-map the genes to a small genomic region (approximately 70 kb). Using a Tobacco Rattle Virus–Virus Induced Gene Silencing approach, the resistance gene was identified. It is shown that Ty-1 and Ty-3 are allelic and that they code for a RNA–dependent RNA polymerase (RDR) belonging to the RDR¿ type, which has an atypical DFDGD motif in the catalytic domain. In contrast to the RDRa type, characterized by a catalytic DLDGD motif, no clear function has yet been described for the RDR¿ type, and thus the Ty-1/Ty-3 gene unveils a completely new class of resistance gene. Although speculative, the resistance mechanism of Ty-1/Ty-3 and its specificity towards TYLCV are discussed in light of the function of the related RDRa class in the amplification of the RNAi response in plants and transcriptional silencing of geminiviruses in plant
Measurements of psi(2S) decays to octet baryon-antibaryon pairs
With a sample of 14 million psi(2S) events collected by the BESII detector at
the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC), the decay channels psi(2S)->p
p-bar, Lambda Lambda-bar, Sigma0 Sigma0-bar, Xi Xi-bar are measured, and their
branching ratios are determined to be (3.36+-0.09+-0.24)*10E-4,
(3.39+-0.20+-0.32)*10E-4, (2.35+-0.36+-0.32)*10E-4, (3.03+-0.40+-0.32)*10E-4,
respectively. In the decay psi(2S)->p p-bar, the angular distribution parameter
alpha is determined to be 0.82+-0.17+-0.04.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Partial wave analysis of J/\psi \to \gamma \phi \phi
Using events collected in the BESII detector, the
radiative decay is
studied. The invariant mass distribution exhibits a near-threshold
enhancement that peaks around 2.24 GeV/.
A partial wave analysis shows that the structure is dominated by a
state () with a mass of
GeV/ and a width of GeV/. The
