Canonically conjugate pairs and phase operators
For quantum mechanics on a lattice the position (``particle number'')
operator and the quasi-momentum (``phase'') operator obey canonical commutation
relations (CCR) only on a dense set of the Hilbert space. We compare exact
numerical results for a particle in simple potentials on the lattice with the
expectations, when the CCR are assumed to be strictly obeyed. Only for
sufficiently smooth eigenfunctions this leads to reasonable results. In the
long time limit the use of the CCR can lead to a qualitativel wrong dynamics
even if the initial state is in the dense set.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Phys. Rev. A, in pres
Flow equation analysis of the anisotropic Kondo model
We use the new method of infinitesimal unitary transformations to calculate
zero temperature correlation functions in the strong-coupling phase of the
anisotropic Kondo model. We find the dynamics on all energy scales including
the crossover behaviour from weak to strong coupling. The integrable structure
of the Hamiltonian is not used in our approach. Our method should also be
useful in other strong-coupling models since few other analytical methods allow
the evaluation of their correlation functions on all energy scales.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 2 eps figures include
Transitions from small to large Fermi momenta in a one-dimensional Kondo lattice model
We study a one-dimensional system that consists of an electron gas coupled to
a spin-1/2 chain by Kondo interaction away from half-filling. We show that
zero-temperature transitions between phases with "small" and "large" Fermi
momenta can be continuous. Such a continuous but Fermi-momentum-changing
transition arises in the presence of spin anisotropy, from a Luttinger liquid
with a small Fermi momentum to a Kondo-dimer phase with a large Fermi momentum.
We have also added a frustrating next-nearest-neighbor interaction in the spin
chain to show the possibility of a similar Fermi-momentum-changing transition,
between the Kondo phase and a spin-Peierls phase, in the spin isotropic case.
This transition, however, appears to involve a region in which the two phases
coexist.Comment: The updated version clarifies the definitions of small and large
Fermi momenta, the role of anisotropy, and how Kondo interaction affects
Luttinger liquid phase. 12 pages, 5 figure
Quantum nucleation in ferromagnets with tetragonal and hexagonal symmetries
The phenomenon of quantum nucleation is studied in a ferromagnet in the
presence of a magnetic field at an arbitrary angle. We consider the
magnetocrystalline anisotropy with tetragonal symmetry and that with hexagonal
symmetry, respectively. By applying the instanton method in the
spin-coherent-state path-integral representation, we calculate the dependence
of the rate of quantum nucleation and the crossover temperature on the
orientation and strength of the field for a thin film and for a bulk solid. Our
results show that the rate of quantum nucleation and the crossover temperature
depend on the orientation of the external magnetic field distinctly, which
provides a possible experimental test for quantum nucleation in nanometer-scale
ferromagnets.Comment: 19 pages and 3 figures, Final version and accepted by Phys. Rev. B
