Narrow channel Si-MOSFETs for electron transport studies
We have fabricated narrow channel Si-MOSFETs for electron transport studies at low temperature. The fabrication process combines optical lithography for large structures and high resolution e-beam lithography for narrow gates. The smallest working devices have a 0.14 μm wide gate. This paper reports the fabrication process and gives some examples of the quantum transport phenomena observed in these devices
Development of the Methods of Control of Radiation Structure of
Specific features of radiation structure of terahertz quantum cascade lasers are determined by wire geometry of their waveguides with small and sub-wavelength transverse dimensions and the length much larger than the wavelength. Here we present an overview of the results of beam profile investigations and of the methods proposed for the control of radiation structure of such lasers
Contributions from SUSY-FCNC couplings to the interpretation of the HyperCP events for the decay \Sigma^+ \to p \mu^+ \mu^-
The observation of three events for the decay
with a dimuon invariant mass of MeV by the HyperCP collaboration
imply that a new particle X may be needed to explain the observed dimuon
invariant mass distribution. We show that there are regions in the SUSY-FCNC
parameter space where the in the NMSSM can be used to explain the
HyperCP events without contradicting all the existing constraints from the
measurements of the kaon decays, and the constraints from the
mixing are automatically satisfied once the constraints from kaon decays are
satisfied.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
K^+ -> pi^+pi^0e^+e^-: a novel short-distance probe
We study the decay K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 e^+ e^-, currently under analysis by the
NA62 Collaboration at CERN. In particular, we provide a detailed analysis of
the Dalitz plot for the long-distance, gamma^*-mediated, contributions
(Bremsstrahlung, direct emission and its interference). We also examine a set
of asymmetries to isolate genuine short-distance effects. While we show that
charge asymmetries are not required to test short distances, they provide the
best environment for its detection. This constitutes by itself a strong
motivation for NA62 to study K^- decays in the future. We therefore provide a
detailed study of different charge asymmetries and the corresponding estimated
signals. Whenever possible, we make contact with the related processes K^+ ->
pi^+ pi^0 gamma and K_L -> pi^+ pi^- e^+ e^- and discuss the advantages of K^+
-> pi^+ pi^0 e^+ e^- over them.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
Atomistic Studies of Defect Nucleation during Nanoindentation of Au (001)
Atomistic studies are carried out to investigate the formation and evolution
of defects during nanoindentation of a gold crystal. The results in this
theoretical study complement the experimental investigations [J. D. Kiely and
J. E. Houston, Phys. Rev. B, v57, 12588 (1998)] extremely well. The defects are
produced by a three step mechanism involving nucleation, glide and reaction of
Shockley partials on the {111} slip planes noncoplanar with the indented
surface. We have observed that slip is in the directions along which the
resolved shear stress has reached the critical value of approximately 2 GPa.
The first yield occurs when the shear stresses reach this critical value on all
the {111} planes involved in the formation of the defect. The phenomenon of
strain hardening is observed due to the sessile stair-rods produced by the
zipping of the partials. The dislocation locks produced during the second yield
give rise to permanent deformation after retraction.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Physical Review
Static Observers in Curved Spaces and Non-inertial Frames in Minkowski Spacetime
Static observers in curved spacetimes may interpret their proper acceleration
as the opposite of a local gravitational field (in the Newtonian sense). Based
on this interpretation and motivated by the equivalence principle, we are led
to investigate congruences of timelike curves in Minkowski spacetime whose
acceleration field coincides with the acceleration field of static observers of
curved spaces. The congruences give rise to non-inertial frames that are
examined. Specifically we find, based on the locality principle, the embedding
of simultaneity hypersurfaces adapted to the non-inertial frame in an explicit
form for arbitrary acceleration fields. We also determine, from the Einstein
equations, a covariant field equation that regulates the behavior of the proper
acceleration of static observers in curved spacetimes. It corresponds to an
exact relativistic version of the Newtonian gravitational field equation. In
the specific case in which the level surfaces of the norm of the acceleration
field of the static observers are maximally symmetric two-dimensional spaces,
the energy-momentum tensor of the source is analyzed.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures
Optical requirements and modelling of coupling devices for the SAFARI instrument on SPICA
The next generation of space missions targeting far-infrared bands will require large-format arrays of extremely low-noise detectors. The development of Transition Edge Sensors (TES) array technology seems to be a viable solution for future mm-wave to Far-Infrared (FIR) space applications where low noise and high sensitivity is required. In this paper we concentrate on a key element for a high sensitivity TES detector array, that of the optical coupling between the incoming electromagnetic field and the phonon system of the suspended membrane. An intermediate solution between free space coupling and a single moded horn is where over-moded light pipes are used to concentrate energy onto multi-moded absorbers. We present a comparison of modelling techniques to analyse the optical efficiency of such light pipes and their interaction with the front end optics and detector cavity
Higgs-boson production associated with a bottom quark at hadron colliders with SUSY-QCD corrections
The Higgs boson production p p (p\bar p) -> b h +X via b g -> b h at the LHC,
which may be an important channel for testing the bottom quark Yukawa coupling,
is subject to large supersymmetric quantum corrections. In this work the
one-loop SUSY-QCD corrections to this process are evaluated and are found to be
quite sizable in some parameter space. We also study the behavior of the
corrections in the limit of heavy SUSY masses and find the remnant effects of
SUSY-QCD. These remnant effects, which are left over in the Higgs sector by the
heavy sparticles, are found to be so sizable (for a light CP-odd Higgs and
large \tan\beta) that they might be observable in the future LHC experiment.
The exploration of such remnant effects is important for probing SUSY,
especially in case that the sparticles are too heavy (above TeV) to be directly
discovered at the LHC.Comment: Results for the Tevatron adde
Evidence of two-electron tunneling interference in Nb/InAs junctions
The impact of junction transparency in driving phase-coherent charge transfer
across diffusive semiconductor-superconductor junctions is demonstrated. We
present conductivity data for a set of Nb-InAs junctions differing only in
interface transparency. Our experimental findings are analyzed within the
quasi-classical Green-function approach and unambiguously show the physical
processes giving rise to the observed excess zero-bias conductivity.Comment: 10 pages (RevTex), 4 figures (PostScript), accepted for pubblication
