Anomalous thickness dependence of the Hall effect in ultrathin Pb layers on Si(111)
The magnetoconductive properties of ultrathin Pb films deposited on Si(111)
are measured and compared with density-functional electronic band-structure
calculations on two-dimensional, free-standing, 1 to 8 monolayers thick Pb(111)
slabs. A description with free-standing slabs is possible because it turned out
that the Hall coefficient is independent of the substrate and of the
crystalline order in the film. We show that the oscillations in sign of the
Hall coefficient observed as a function of film thickness can be explained
directly from the thickness dependent variations of the electronic
bandstructure at the Fermi energy.Comment: 4 pages incl. 3 figures, RevTeX, to appear in Phys. Rev.
An Inflationary Model in String Theory
We construct a model of inflation in string theory after carefully taking
into account moduli stabilization. The setting is a warped compactification of
Type IIB string theory in the presence of D3 and anti-D3-branes. The inflaton
is the position of a D3-brane in the internal space. By suitably adjusting
fluxes and the location of symmetrically placed anti-D3-branes, we show that at
a point of enhanced symmetry, the inflaton potential V can have a broad
maximum, satisfying the condition V''/V << 1 in Planck units. On starting close
to the top of this potential the slow-roll conditions can be met. Observational
constraints impose significant restrictions. As a first pass we show that these
can be satisfied and determine the important scales in the compactification to
within an order of magnitude. One robust feature is that the scale of inflation
is low, H = O(10^{10}) GeV. Removing the observational constraints makes it
much easier to construct a slow-roll inflationary model. Generalizations and
consequences including the possibility of eternal inflation are also discussed.
A more careful study, including explicit constructions of the model in string
theory, is left for the future.Comment: 27 pages, LaTeX, 1 eps figure. v2: references adde
Emergence of coherence in the charge-density wave state of 2H-NbSe₂
A charge-density wave (CDW) state has a broken symmetry described by a complex order parameter with an amplitude and a phase. The conventional view, based on clean, weak-coupling systems, is that a finite amplitude and long-range phase coherence set in simultaneously at the CDW transition temperature T. Here we investigate, using photoemission, X-ray scattering and scanning tunnelling microscopy, the canonical CDW compound 2H-NbSe intercalated with Mn and Co, and show that the conventional view is untenable. We find that, either at high temperature or at large intercalation, CDW order becomes short-ranged with a well-defined amplitude, which has impacts on the electronic dispersion, giving rise to an energy gap. The phase transition at T marks the onset of long-range order with global phase coherence, leading to sharp electronic excitations. Our observations emphasize the importance of phase fluctuations in strongly coupled CDW systems and provide insights into the significance of phase incoherence in ‘pseudogap’ states
Flux Compactifications on Calabi-Yau Threefolds
The presence of RR and NS three-form fluxes in type IIB string
compactification on a Calabi-Yau orientifold gives rise to a nontrivial
superpotential W for the dilaton and complex structure moduli. This
superpotential is computable in terms of the period integrals of the Calabi-Yau
manifold. In this paper, we present explicit examples of both supersymmetric
and nonsupersymmetric solutions to the resulting 4d N=1 supersymmetric no-scale
supergravity, including some nonsupersymmetric solutions with relatively small
values of W. Our examples arise on orientifolds of the hypersurfaces in
and . They serve as explicit
illustrations of several of the ingredients which have played a role in the
recent proposals for constructing de Sitter vacua of string theory.Comment: 30 pages, harvmac big; refs and minor comments adde

The PHENIX Experiment at RHIC
The physics emphases of the PHENIX collaboration and the design and current
status of the PHENIX detector are discussed. The plan of the collaboration for
making the most effective use of the available luminosity in the first years of
RHIC operation is also presented.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. Further details of the PHENIX physics program

Pion-Xi correlations in Au-Au collisions at STAR
We present pion-Xi correlation analysis in Au-Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=
200 GeV and sqrt(s_NN) = 62.4 GeV, performed using the STAR detector at RHIC. A
Xi*(1530) resonance signal is observed for the first time in Au-Au collisions.
Experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions. The strength of
the Xi* peak is reproduced in the correlation function assuming that pions and
Xis emerge from a system in collective expansion.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of 18th Nuclear Physics Division

Azimuthal anisotropy at RHIC: the first and fourth harmonics
We report the first observations of the first harmonic (directed flow, v_1),
and the fourth harmonic (v_4), in the azimuthal distribution of particles with
respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion
Collider (RHIC). Both measurements were done taking advantage of the large
elliptic flow (v_2) generated at RHIC. From the correlation of v_2 with v_1 it
is determined that v_2 is positive, or {\it in-plane}. The integrated v_4 is
about a factor of 10 smaller than v_2. For the sixth (v_6) and eighth (v_8)
harmonics upper limits on the magnitudes are reported.Comment: 6 pages with 3 figures, as accepted for Phys. Rev. Letters The data

Inclusive pi0 spectra at high transverse momentum in d-Au collisions at RHIC
Preliminary results on inclusive neutral pion production in d-Au collisions
at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV in the pseudo-rapidity range 0<eta<1 are presented. The
measurement is performed using the STAR Barrel Electromagnetic calorimeter
(BEMC). In this paper, the analysis of the first BEMC hadron measurement is
described and the results are compared with earlier RHIC findings. The pi0
invariant differential cross sections show good agreement with next-to-leading
order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 18th Nuclear Physics Division Conference of the

Pion, kaon, proton and anti-proton transverse momentum distributions from p+p and d+Au collisions at GeV
Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of , , and
from 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions are reported. A
time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology
is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the
Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower
energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor () between
protons and charged hadrons () in the transverse momentum
range GeV/c is measured to be
(stat)(syst) in minimum-bias collisions and shows little
centrality dependence. The yield ratio of in minimum-bias d+Au
collisions is found to be a factor of 2 lower than that in Au+Au collisions,
indicating that the Cronin effect alone is not enough to account for the
relative baryon enhancement observed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We extended the pion spectra from
transverse momentum 1.8 GeV/c to 3. GeV/
