    Capacitively Coupled Electrical Stimulation of Rat Chondroepiphysis Explants: A Histomorphometric Analysis

    [EN] The growth plate is a cartilaginous layer present from the gestation period until the end of puberty where it ossifies joining diaphysis and epiphysis. During this period several endocrine, autocrine, and paracrine processes within the growth plate are carried out by chondrocytes; therefore, a disruption in cellular functions may lead to pathologies affecting bone development. It is known that electric fields impact the growth plate; however, parameters such as stimulation time and electric field intensity are not well documented. Accordingly, this study presents a histomorphometrical framework to assess the effect of electric fields on chondroepiphysis ex-plants. Bones were stimulated with 3.5 and 7 mV/cm, and for each electric field two exposure times were tested for 30 days (30 min and 1 h). Results evidenced that electric fields increased the hypertrophic zones compared with controls. In addition, a stimulation of 3.5 mV/cm applied for 1 h preserved the columnar cell density and its orientation. Moreover, a pre-hypertrophy differentiation in the center of the chondroepiphysis was observed when explants were stimulated during 1 h with both electric fields. These findings allow the understanding of the effect of electrical stimulation over growth plate organization and how the stimulation modifies chondrocytes morphophysiology.This research was supported by COLCIENCIAS Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation.     Growth curve estimation for retinto beef cattle: practice aspects for tipification of weights

    The growth curve in Retinto cattle from Extremadura and Andalusia is studied, taking in account the birthing sequence, season and type of birth, type of mating and offsprings sex. The function of lineal regression, Weight = 39.043 + 0.909 Age, was fitted. Excepting birth and mating types all other effects were significant in the growth curve.Se analiza la curva de crecimiento hasta el destete en dos lotes de animales procedentes de rebaños andaluces y extremeños de ganado vacuno Retinto. El mejor ajuste general corresponde a la regresión lineal de acuerdo con la ecuación: Peso = 39,043 + 0,909 Edad. Se estudió el efecto del lote, número, estación y tipo de parto, tipo de cubrición y sexo de la cría. Todos, salvo tipo de parto y cubrición, fueron significativos

    Chronic neuropsychiatric sequelae of SARS‐CoV‐2: Protocol and methods from the Alzheimer's Association Global Consortium

    Introduction Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused >3.5 million deaths worldwide and affected >160 million people. At least twice as many have been infected but remained asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. COVID-19 includes central nervous system manifestations mediated by inflammation and cerebrovascular, anoxic, and/or viral neurotoxicity mechanisms. More than one third of patients with COVID-19 develop neurologic problems during the acute phase of the illness, including loss of sense of smell or taste, seizures, and stroke. Damage or functional changes to the brain may result in chronic sequelae. The risk of incident cognitive and neuropsychiatric complications appears independent from the severity of the original pulmonary illness. It behooves the scientific and medical community to attempt to understand the molecular and/or systemic factors linking COVID-19 to neurologic illness, both short and long term. Methods This article describes what is known so far in terms of links among COVID-19, the brain, neurological symptoms, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias. We focus on risk factors and possible molecular, inflammatory, and viral mechanisms underlying neurological injury. We also provide a comprehensive description of the Alzheimer's Association Consortium on Chronic Neuropsychiatric Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (CNS SC2) harmonized methodology to address these questions using a worldwide network of researchers and institutions. Results Successful harmonization of designs and methods was achieved through a consensus process initially fragmented by specific interest groups (epidemiology, clinical assessments, cognitive evaluation, biomarkers, and neuroimaging). Conclusions from subcommittees were presented to the whole group and discussed extensively. Presently data collection is ongoing at 19 sites in 12 countries representing Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe. Discussion The Alzheimer's Association Global Consortium harmonized methodology is proposed as a model to study long-term neurocognitive sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection

    Seguimiento de las guías españolas para el manejo del asma por el médico de atención primaria: un estudio observacional ambispectivo

    Objetivo Evaluar el grado de seguimiento de las recomendaciones de las versiones de la Guía española para el manejo del asma (GEMA 2009 y 2015) y su repercusión en el control de la enfermedad. Material y métodos Estudio observacional y ambispectivo realizado entre septiembre del 2015 y abril del 2016, en el que participaron 314 médicos de atención primaria y 2.864 pacientes. Resultados Utilizando datos retrospectivos, 81 de los 314 médicos (25, 8% [IC del 95%, 21, 3 a 30, 9]) comunicaron seguir las recomendaciones de la GEMA 2009. Al inicio del estudio, 88 de los 314 médicos (28, 0% [IC del 95%, 23, 4 a 33, 2]) seguían las recomendaciones de la GEMA 2015. El tener un asma mal controlada (OR 0, 19, IC del 95%, 0, 13 a 0, 28) y presentar un asma persistente grave al inicio del estudio (OR 0, 20, IC del 95%, 0, 12 a 0, 34) se asociaron negativamente con tener un asma bien controlada al final del seguimiento. Por el contrario, el seguimiento de las recomendaciones de la GEMA 2015 se asoció de manera positiva con una mayor posibilidad de que el paciente tuviera un asma bien controlada al final del periodo de seguimiento (OR 1, 70, IC del 95%, 1, 40 a 2, 06). Conclusiones El escaso seguimiento de las guías clínicas para el manejo del asma constituye un problema común entre los médicos de atención primaria. Un seguimiento de estas guías se asocia con un control mejor del asma. Existe la necesidad de actuaciones que puedan mejorar el seguimiento por parte de los médicos de atención primaria de las guías para el manejo del asma. Objective: To assess the degree of compliance with the recommendations of the 2009 and 2015 versions of the Spanish guidelines for managing asthma (Guía Española para el Manejo del Asma [GEMA]) and the effect of this compliance on controlling the disease. Material and methods: We conducted an observational ambispective study between September 2015 and April 2016 in which 314 primary care physicians and 2864 patients participated. Results: Using retrospective data, we found that 81 of the 314 physicians (25.8%; 95% CI 21.3–30.9) stated that they complied with the GEMA2009 recommendations. At the start of the study, 88 of the 314 physicians (28.0%; 95% CI 23.4–33.2) complied with the GEMA2015 recommendations. Poorly controlled asthma (OR, 0.19; 95% CI 0.13–0.28) and persistent severe asthma at the start of the study (OR, 0.20; 95% CI 0.12–0.34) were negatively associated with having well-controlled asthma by the end of the follow-up. In contrast, compliance with the GEMA2015 recommendations was positively associated with a greater likelihood that the patient would have well-controlled asthma by the end of the follow-up (OR, 1.70; 95% CI 1.40–2.06). Conclusions: Low compliance with the clinical guidelines for managing asthma is a common problem among primary care physicians. Compliance with these guidelines is associated with better asthma control. Actions need to be taken to improve primary care physician compliance with the asthma management guidelines

    Thin Films of Zirconia-Phosphate Glasses Deposited by an Aerosol CVD Process

    The polycrystalline state of the ZrO2 films was an disadvantage for some specific protective coating applications. To resolve this fact we proposed to obtain an amorphous thin film by addition of P2O5, which will act as glass formator agent. With an aerosol CVD process by using zirconium acetylacetonate and triphenyl phosphate dissolved in a mixture of acetylacetone and benzyl alcohol, we achieved to deposit mixed P2O5-ZrO2 films between 480°C and 600°C. The P2O5 content varied from 0% up to 60%. By measuring systematically the composition of the film we have noticed the influence on the composition of the films, on the one hand of the hygrometric degree of the carrier gas and on the other hand of the temperature used for the dissolution of the organometallic precursors in the solvent. The highest the dissolution temperature was, the most the phosphorus content was. After an annealing at 500°C during one hour, the films exhibited by Xray diffraction analysis an amorphous structure and a very good transparency. More over the evolution of the I.R. spectra between 1200 cm-1 and 900 cm-1 and arround 400 cm-l are discussed in function of the composition of the films

    An electrophoretic study of sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORD) in sperm and seminal plasma (SP) was realized. In SP, three phenotypes (one slow band, one fast, and both bands) were observed, corroborating the electrophoretic variability of SP-SORD formerly reported by us, while, in sperm, SORD showed a phenotype of one band faster than the one of SP. Biochemical studies showed that thiol groups participate in the mobility of the SP fast band; furthermore, an interchange of the bands of SP-SORD was observed which suggests that the isozymes are due to conformational isomerism or to molecular aggregates

    Bloom syndrome in a Mexican Mestizo girl

    A 3-year-old girl with Bloom syndrome is described. She exhibited stunted growth of prenatal onset and defective immunity, but the typical skin manifestations were absent. Cytogentic analysis revealed a 46,XX complement, 12.2 % of metaphases with at least a structural aberration, and a ten-fold increase in the sister-chromatid exchange rate. Leukocyte ?-glucuronidase activity was reduced to about 1/3; the significance of this finding is not clear. The present observation demonstrates the variable expression of the disorder probably dependent on ethnic and constitutional factors
