Comparison of Volatile Compounds in Two Brandies Using HS-SPME Coupled with GC-O, GC-MS and Sensory Evaluation
The aim of this study was to compare the volatile compounds between Changyu XO and Hennessy XO. Sensoryevaluation was performed by a panel of tasters. Qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis was achieved byheadspace solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME), coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS)and gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O). A total of 160 volatile compounds were identified in the twobrands of brandy. Of these, 118 compounds were common to both Changyu XO and Hennessy XO; 18 compoundswere specific to Changyu XO and 24 were specific to Hennessy XO. A total of 85 aroma compounds responsiblefor brandy flavour were identified by GC-O, of which 68 were common to both brands, while seven and tenwere specific to Changyu XO and Hennessy XO, respectively. The study provided detailed information aboutthe compounds responsible for the characteristic flavour of specific brandies. According to statistical analysis, significant differences were recorded between Changyu XO and Hennessy XO. Most volatile compounds inChangyu XO occurred at lower concentrations than those in Hennessy XO. Based on sensory evaluation analysis, the floral, alcohol and rancid aroma descriptors achieved higher scores in Changyu XO and Hennessy XO, whilethe lime aroma seemed specific to Hennessy XO. Herb and almond aromas were specific to Changyu XO
A Note on Acceleration from Product Space Compactification
We study compactifications of Einstein gravity on product spaces in vacuum
and their acceleration phases. Scalar potentials for the dimensionally reduced
effective theory are found to be of exponential form and exact solutions are
obtained for a class of product spaces. The inflation in our solutions is not
sufficient for the early universe. We comment on the possibility of obtaining
sufficient inflation by compactification in general.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, v2: further comments and references added, v3:

Activity in the brain's valuation and mentalizing networks is associated with propagation of online recommendations
Word of mouth recommendations influence a wide range of choices and behaviors. What takes place in the mind of recommendation receivers that determines whether they will be successfully influenced? Prior work suggests that brain systems implicated in assessing the value of stimuli (i.e., subjective valuation) and understanding others' mental states (i.e., mentalizing) play key roles. The current study used neuroimaging and natural language classifiers to extend these findings in a naturalistic context and tested the extent to which the two systems work together or independently in responding to social influence. First, we show that in response to text-based social media recommendations, activity in both the brain's valuation system and mentalizing system was associated with greater likelihood of opinion change. Second, participants were more likely to update their opinions in response to negative, compared to positive, recommendations, with activity in the mentalizing system scaling with the negativity of the recommendations. Third, decreased functional connectivity between valuation and mentalizing systems was associated with opinion change. Results highlight the role of brain regions involved in mentalizing and positive valuation in recommendation propagation, and further show that mentalizing may be particularly key in processing negative recommendations, whereas the valuation system is relevant in evaluating both positive and negative recommendations
Hyperbolic Space Cosmologies
We present a systematic study of accelerating cosmologies obtained from
M/string theory compactifications of hyperbolic spaces with time-varying
volume. A set of vacuum solutions where the internal space is a product of
hyperbolic manifolds is found to give qualitatively the same accelerating
four-dimensional FLRW universe behavior as a single hyperbolic space. We also
examine the possibility that our universe is a hyperbolic space and provide
exact Milne type solutions, as well as intersecting S-brane solutions. When
both the usual 4D spacetime and the m-dimensional internal space are
hyperbolic, we find eternally accelerating cosmologies for , with and
without form field backgrounds. In particular, the effective potential for a
magnetic field background in the large 3 dimensions is positive definite with a
local minimum and thus enhances the eternally accelerating expansion.Comment: 33 pages, 2 figures; v2 refs added; v3 minor change in text, JHEP

Torsion-induced spin precession
We investigate the motion of a spinning test particle in a spatially-flat
FRW-type space-time in the framework of the Einstein-Cartan theory. The
space-time has a torsion arising from a spinning fluid filling the space-time.
We show that for spinning particles with nonzero transverse spin components,
the torsion induces a precession of particle spin around the direction of the
fluid spin. We also show that a charged spinning particle moving in a
torsion-less spatially-flat FRW space-time in the presence of a uniform
magnetic field undergoes a precession of a different character.Comment: latex, 4 eps figure
A High Statistics Search for Ultra-High Energy Gamma-Ray Emission from Cygnus X-3 and Hercules X-1
We have carried out a high statistics (2 Billion events) search for
ultra-high energy gamma-ray emission from the X-ray binary sources Cygnus X-3
and Hercules X-1. Using data taken with the CASA-MIA detector over a five year
period (1990-1995), we find no evidence for steady emission from either source
at energies above 115 TeV. The derived upper limits on such emission are more
than two orders of magnitude lower than earlier claimed detections. We also
find no evidence for neutral particle or gamma-ray emission from either source
on time scales of one day and 0.5 hr. For Cygnus X-3, there is no evidence for
emission correlated with the 4.8 hr X-ray periodicity or with the occurrence of
large radio flares. Unless one postulates that these sources were very active
earlier and are now dormant, the limits presented here put into question the
earlier results, and highlight the difficulties that possible future
experiments will have in detecting gamma-ray signals at ultra-high energies.Comment: 26 LaTeX pages, 16 PostScript figures, uses psfig.sty to be published

System Size and Energy Dependence of Jet-Induced Hadron Pair Correlation Shapes in Cu+Cu and Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 and 62.4 GeV
We present azimuthal angle correlations of intermediate transverse momentum
(1-4 GeV/c) hadrons from {dijets} in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) =
62.4 and 200 GeV. The away-side dijet induced azimuthal correlation is
broadened, non-Gaussian, and peaked away from \Delta\phi=\pi in central and
semi-central collisions in all the systems. The broadening and peak location
are found to depend upon the number of participants in the collision, but not
on the collision energy or beam nuclei. These results are consistent with sound
or shock wave models, but pose challenges to Cherenkov gluon radiation models.Comment: 464 authors from 60 institutions, 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.
