Challenges of ultra large scale integration of biomedical computing systems
The NCRI Informatics Initiative is overseeing the implementation of an informatics
framework for the UK cancer research community. The framework advocates an integrated
multidisciplinary method of working between scientific and medical communities. Key to this
process is community adoption of high quality acquisition, storage, sharing and integration of
diverse data elements to improve knowledge of the causes, prevention and treatment of
cancer. The integration of the complex data and meta-data used by these multiple
communities is a significant challenge and there are technical, resource-based and
sociological issues to be addressed. In this paper we review progress aimed at establishing
the framework and outline key challenges in ultra large scale integration of biomedical
computing systems
Boundary value problems for the stationary axisymmetric Einstein equations: a disk rotating around a black hole
We solve a class of boundary value problems for the stationary axisymmetric
Einstein equations corresponding to a disk of dust rotating uniformly around a
central black hole. The solutions are given explicitly in terms of theta
functions on a family of hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces of genus 4. In the
absence of a disk, they reduce to the Kerr black hole. In the absence of a
black hole, they reduce to the Neugebauer-Meinel disk.Comment: 46 page
The Wahlquist-Newman solution
Based on a geometrical property which holds both for the Kerr metric and for
the Wahlquist metric we argue that the Kerr metric is a vacuum subcase of the
Wahlquist perfect-fluid solution. The Kerr-Newman metric is a physically
preferred charged generalization of the Kerr metric. We discuss which geometric
property makes this metric so special and claim that a charged generalization
of the Wahlquist metric satisfying a similar property should exist. This is the
Wahlquist-Newman metric, which we present explicitly in this paper. This family
of metrics has eight essential parameters and contains the Kerr-Newman-de
Sitter and the Wahlquist metrics, as well as the whole Pleba\'nski limit of the
rotating C-metric, as particular cases. We describe the basic geometric
properties of the Wahlquist-Newman metric, including the electromagnetic field
and its sources, the static limit of the family and the extension of the

Initial data for a head on collision of two Kerr-like black holes with close limit
We prove the existence of a family of initial data for the Einstein vacuum
equation which can be interpreted as the data for two Kerr-like black holes in
arbitrary location and with spin in arbitrary direction. This family of initial
data has the following properties: (i) When the mass parameter of one of them
is zero or when the distance between them goes to infinity, it reduces exactly
to the Kerr initial data. (ii) When the distance between them is zero, we
obtain exactly a Kerr initial data with mass and angular momentum equal to the
sum of the mass and angular momentum parameters of each of them. The initial
data depends smoothly on the distance, the mass and the angular momentum

Measuring Black Hole Spin using X-ray Reflection Spectroscopy
I review the current status of X-ray reflection (a.k.a. broad iron line)
based black hole spin measurements. This is a powerful technique that allows us
to measure robust black hole spins across the mass range, from the stellar-mass
black holes in X-ray binaries to the supermassive black holes in active
galactic nuclei. After describing the basic assumptions of this approach, I lay
out the detailed methodology focusing on "best practices" that have been found
necessary to obtain robust results. Reflecting my own biases, this review is
slanted towards a discussion of supermassive black hole (SMBH) spin in active
galactic nuclei (AGN). Pulling together all of the available XMM-Newton and
Suzaku results from the literature that satisfy objective quality control
criteria, it is clear that a large fraction of SMBHs are rapidly-spinning,
although there are tentative hints of a more slowly spinning population at high
(M>5*10^7Msun) and low (M<2*10^6Msun) mass. I also engage in a brief review of
the spins of stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries. In general,
reflection-based and continuum-fitting based spin measures are in agreement,
although there remain two objects (GROJ1655-40 and 4U1543-475) for which that
is not true. I end this review by discussing the exciting frontier of
relativistic reverberation, particularly the discovery of broad iron line
reverberation in XMM-Newton data for the Seyfert galaxies NGC4151, NGC7314 and
MCG-5-23-16. As well as confirming the basic paradigm of relativistic disk
reflection, this detection of reverberation demonstrates that future large-area
X-ray observatories such as LOFT will make tremendous progress in studies of
strong gravity using relativistic reverberation in AGN.Comment: 19 pages. To appear in proceedings of the ISSI-Bern workshop on "The

Motion of influential players can support cooperation in Prisoner's Dilemma
We study a spatial Prisoner's dilemma game with two types (A and B) of
players located on a square lattice. Players following either cooperator or
defector strategies play Prisoner's Dilemma games with their 24 nearest
neighbors. The players are allowed to adopt one of their neighbor's strategy
with a probability dependent on the payoff difference and type of the given
neighbor. Players A and B have different efficiency in the transfer of their
own strategy therefore the strategy adoption probability is reduced by a
multiplicative factor (w < 1) from the players of type B. We report that the
motion of the influential payers (type A) can improve remarkably the
maintenance of cooperation even for their low densities.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
The Sagnac Effect in curved space-times from an analogy with the Aharonov-Bohm Effect
In the context of the natural splitting, the standard relative dynamics can
be expressed in terms of gravito-electromagnetic fields, which allow to
formally introduce a gravito-magnetic Aharonov-Bohm effect. We showed elsewhere
that this formal analogy can be used to derive the Sagnac effect in flat
space-time as a gravito-magnetic Aharonov-Bohm effect. Here, we generalize
those results to study the General Relativistic corrections to the Sagnac
effect in some stationary and axially symmetric geometries, such as the
space-time around a weakly gravitating and rotating source, Kerr space-time,

Reducing alcohol use through alcohol control policies in the general population and population subgroups: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
We estimate the effects of alcohol taxation, minimum unit pricing (MUP), and restricted temporal availability on overall alcohol consumption and review their differential impact across sociodemographic groups. Web of Science, Medline, PsycInfo, Embase, and EconLit were searched on 08/12/2022 and 09/26/2022 for studies on newly introduced or changed alcohol policies published between 2000 and 2022 (Prospero registration: CRD42022339791). We combined data using random-effects meta-analyses. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Of 1887 reports, 36 were eligible. Doubling alcohol taxes or introducing MUP (Int$ 0.90/10 g of pure alcohol) reduced consumption by 10% (for taxation: 95% prediction intervals [PI]: -18.5%, -1.2%; for MUP: 95% PI: -28.2%, 5.8%), restricting alcohol sales by one day a week reduced consumption by 3.6% (95% PI: -7.2%, -0.1%). Substantial between-study heterogeneity contributes to high levels of uncertainty and must be considered in interpretation. Pricing policies resulted in greater consumption changes among low-income alcohol users, while results were inconclusive for other socioeconomic indicators, gender, and racial and ethnic groups. Research is needed on the differential impact of alcohol policies, particularly for groups bearing a disproportionate alcohol-attributable health burden.

Patient and physician gender concordance in preventive care in university primary care settings.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the quality of preventive care according to physician and patient gender in a country with universal health care coverage.
METHODS: We assessed a retrospective cohort study of 1001 randomly selected patients aged 50-80years followed over 2years (2005-2006) in 4 Swiss university primary care settings (Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Zürich). We used indicators derived from RAND's Quality Assessment Tools and examined percentages of recommended preventive care. Results were adjusted using hierarchical multivariate logistic regression models.
RESULTS: 1001 patients (44% women) were followed by 189 physicians (52% women). Female patients received less preventive care than male patients (65.2% vs. 72.1%, p<0.001). Female physicians provided significantly more preventive care than male physicians (p=0.01) to both female (66.7% vs. 63.6%) and male patients (73.4% vs. 70.7%). After multivariate adjustment, differences according to physician (p=0.02) and patient gender (p<0.001) remained statistically significant. Female physicians provided more recommended cancer screening than male physicians (78.4 vs. 71.9%, p=0.01).
CONCLUSIONS: In Swiss university primary care settings, female patients receive less preventive care than male patients, with female physicians providing more preventive care than male physicians. Greater attention should be paid to female patients in preventive care and to why female physicians tend to provide better preventive care
