Non-linear Dynamics in QED_3 and Non-trivial Infrared Structure
In this work we consider a coupled system of Schwinger-Dyson equations for
self-energy and vertex functions in QED_3. Using the concept of a
semi-amputated vertex function, we manage to decouple the vertex equation and
transform it in the infrared into a non-linear differential equation of
Emden-Fowler type. Its solution suggests the following picture: in the absence
of infrared cut-offs there is only a trivial infrared fixed-point structure in
the theory. However, the presence of masses, for either fermions or photons,
changes the situation drastically, leading to a mass-dependent non-trivial
infrared fixed point. In this picture a dynamical mass for the fermions is
found to be generated consistently. The non-linearity of the equations gives
rise to highly non-trivial constraints among the mass and effective (`running')
gauge coupling, which impose lower and upper bounds on the latter for dynamical
mass generation to occur. Possible implications of this to the theory of
high-temperature superconductivity are briefly discussed.Comment: 29 pages LATEX, 7 eps figures incorporated, uses axodraw style.

The effect of lamb carcase weight and GR depth on the production of value-added cuts – A short communication
Times for the progressive breakdown of 95 lamb carcases were recorded to determine the impact of carcase weight and GR tissue depth on the time and therefore cost to produce value added retail cuts. Further analysis also assessed the potential to use these carcase traits as predictors of fabrication times. Regression modeling demonstrated there was a limited ability to predict the difference in time to fabricate mid value-added (R2 = 0.18) and extreme value-added (R2 = 0.12) cuts compared to traditional cuts, suggesting that other factors need to be considered. However, this study highlighted the significant increases in time required to fabricate more value-added cuts and to breakdown heavier carcases. Furthermore, this study demonstrated the changes to the saleable meat yield as the degree of fabrication increased, such that the average product prices increased (28.72/kg for extreme value added) compared to traditional retail cuts ($15/kg) to offset the increased labour of fabricating value-added cuts
Quantum magneto-oscillations in a two-dimensional Fermi liquid
Quantum magneto-oscillations provide a powerfull tool for quantifying
Fermi-liquid parameters of metals. In particular, the quasiparticle effective
mass and spin susceptibility are extracted from the experiment using the
Lifshitz-Kosevich formula, derived under the assumption that the properties of
the system in a non-zero magnetic field are determined uniquely by the
zero-field Fermi-liquid state. This assumption is valid in 3D but, generally
speaking, erroneous in 2D where the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula may be applied
only if the oscillations are strongly damped by thermal smearing and disorder.
In this work, the effects of interactions and disorder on the amplitude of
magneto-oscillations in 2D are studied. It is found that the effective mass
diverges logarithmically with decreasing temperature signaling a deviation from
the Fermi-liquid behavior. It is also shown that the quasiparticle lifetime due
to inelastic interactions does not enter the oscillation amplitude, although
these interactions do renormalize the effective mass. This result provides a
generalization of the Fowler-Prange theorem formulated originally for the
electron-phonon interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Kosterlitz Thouless Universality in Dimer Models
Using the monomer-dimer representation of strongly coupled U(N) lattice gauge
theories with staggered fermions, we study finite temperature chiral phase
transitions in (2+1) dimensions. A new cluster algorithm allows us to compute
monomer-monomer and dimer-dimer correlations at zero monomer density (chiral
limit) accurately on large lattices. This makes it possible to show
convincingly, for the first time, that these models undergo a finite
temperature phase transition which belongs to the Kosterlitz-Thouless
universality class. We find that this universality class is unaffected even in
the large N limit. This shows that the mean field analysis often used in this
limit breaks down in the critical region.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Reaction rate for two--neutron capture by He
Recent investigations suggest that the neutrino--heated hot bubble between
the nascent neutron star and the overlying stellar mantle of a type--II
supernova may be the site of the r--process. In the preceding --process
building up the elements to , the He(2n,)He--
and He(,n)Be--reactions bridging the instability gap at
and could be of relevance. We suggest a mechanism for
He(2n,)He and calculate the reaction rate within the
+n+n approach. The value obtained is about a factor 1.6 smaller than
the one obtained recently in the simpler direct--capture model, but is at least
three order of magnitude enhanced compared to the previously adopted value. Our
calculation confirms the result of the direct--capture calculation that under
representative conditions in the --process the reaction path proceeding
through He is negligible compared to He(n,)Be.Comment: 13 pages, 4 postscript figures, to appear in "Zeitschrift f. Physik

Targeting the Canonical Nuclear Factor-κB Pathway with a High-Potency IKK2 Inhibitor Improves Outcomes in a Mouse Model of Idiopathic Pneumonia Syndrome
Idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS) is a noninfectious inflammatory disorder of the lungs that occurs most often after fully myeloablative allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). IPS can be severe and is associated with high 1-year mortality rates despite existing therapies. The canonical nuclear factor-(NF) κB signaling pathway has previously been linked to several inflammatory disorders of the lung, including asthma and lung allograft rejection. It has never been specifically targeted as a novel IPS treatment approach, however. Here, we report that the IκB kinase 2 (IKK2) antagonist BAY 65-5811 or “compound A,” a highly potent and specific inhibitor of the NF-κB pathway, was able to improve median survival times and recipient oxygenation in a well-described mouse model of IPS. Compound A impaired the production of the proinflammatory chemokines CCL2 and CCL5 within the host lung after transplantation. This resulted in significantly lower numbers of donor lung infiltrating CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and reduced pulmonary inflammatory cytokine production after allograft. Compound A's beneficial effects appeared to be specific for limiting pulmonary injury, as the drug was unable to improve outcomes in a B6 into B6D2 haplotype-matched murine HSCT model in which recipient mice succumb to lethal acute graft-versus-host disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Collectively, our data suggest that the targeting of the canonical NF-κB pathway with a small molecule IKK2 antagonist may represent an effective and novel therapy for the specific management of acute lung injury that can occur after allogeneic HSCT
Modular Assessment of Rainfall-Runoff Models Toolbox (MARRMoT) v1.2:an open-source, extendable framework providing implementations of 46 conceptual hydrologic models as continuous state-space formulations
This paper presents the Modular Assessment of Rainfall-Runoff Models Toolbox (MARRMoT): A modular open-source toolbox containing documentation and model code based on 46 existing conceptual hydrologic models. The toolbox is developed in MATLAB and works with Octave. MARRMoT models are based solely on traceable published material and model documentation, not on already-existing computer code. Models are implemented following several good practices of model development: The definition of model equations (the mathematical model) is kept separate from the numerical methods used to solve these equations (the numerical model) to generate clean code that is easy to adjust and debug; the implicit Euler time-stepping scheme is provided as the default option to numerically approximate each model's ordinary differential equations in a more robust way than (common) explicit schemes would; threshold equations are smoothed to avoid discontinuities in the model's objective function space; and the model equations are solved simultaneously, avoiding the physically unrealistic sequential solving of fluxes. Generalized parameter ranges are provided to assist with model inter-comparison studies. In addition to this paper and its Supplement, a user manual is provided together with several workflow scripts that show basic example applications of the toolbox. The toolbox and user manual are available from span classCombining double low line"uri"https://github.com/wknoben/MARRMoT/span (last access: 30 May 2019; a hrefCombining double low line"https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3235664"https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3235664). Our main scientific objective in developing this toolbox is to facilitate the inter-comparison of conceptual hydrological model structures which are in widespread use in order to ultimately reduce the uncertainty in model structure selection
