    We report on a newborn with a large arterioportal fistula of the liver complicated by a sudden reversal of flow in the portal and superior mesenteric vein, leading to congestion and ischemia of the small intestine. Ultrasound, duplex Doppler sonography and angiographic features are presented. Ligation of the hepatic artery led to a complete recovery

    The dynamical analog of the Kohn Anomaly image of the Fermi Surface is demonstrated for the response functions to the surface acoustic waves in Quantum Hall Systems near ν=1/2\nu = 1/2. Kinks appear in the velocity shift Deltas/sDelta s/s and attenuation coefficient Γ\Gamma.     Equality of the bulk and edge Hall conductances in a mobility gap

    We consider the edge and bulk conductances for 2D quantum Hall systems in which the Fermi energy falls in a band where bulk states are localized. We show that the resulting quantities are equal, when appropriately defined. An appropriate definition of the edge conductance may be obtained through a suitable time averaging procedure or by including a contribution from states in the localized band. In a further result on the Harper Hamiltonian, we show that this contribution is essential. In an appendix we establish quantized plateaus for the conductance of systems which need not be translation ergodic.Comment: 38 pages, LaTeX, uses svjour class.     The epidemiology and clinical features of rickettsial diseases in North Queensland, Australia: implications for patient identification and management

    Background: Rickettsial infections are a common cause of hospitalization in tropical settings, although early diagnosis is challenging in the rural locations where these infections are usually seen. Methods: This retrospective, clinical audit of microbiologically-confirmed cases of scrub typhus or spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsial infection between 1997 and 2016 was performed a tertiary referral hospital in tropical Australia. Clinical, laboratory and radiological findings at presentation were correlated with the patients’ subsequent clinical course. Results: There were 135 locally-acquired cases (95 scrub typhus, 37 SFG, 3 undifferentiated). There were nine hospitalizations during the first 5 years of the study period and 81 in the last 5 years (p for trend = 0.003). Eighteen (13%) of the 135 cases required ICU admission, all of whom were adults. A greater proportion of patients with SFG infection required ICU support (8/37 (22%) compared with 10/95 (11%) scrub typhus cases), although this difference did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.10). Three (8%) of the 37 patients with SFG infection had severe disease (1 died, 2 developed permanent disability) versus 0/95 scrub typhus patients (p = 0.02). Adults with a high admission qSOFA score (≥2) had an odds ratio (OR) of 19 (95% CI:4.8–74.5) for subsequent ICU admission (p<0.001); adults with a high NEWS2 score (≥7) had an OR of 14.3 (95% CI:4.5–45.32) for ICU admission (p<0.001). A patient’s respiratory rate at presentation had strong prognostic utility: if an adult had an admission respiratory rate <22 breaths/minute, the negative predictive value for subsequent ICU admission was 95% (95% CI 88–99). Conclusions: In the well-resourced Australian health system outcomes are excellent, but the local burden of rickettsial disease appears to be increasing and the clinical phenotype of SFG infections may be more severe than previously believed.     The structure of flame filaments in chaotic flows

    The structure of flame filaments resulting from chaotic mixing within a combustion reaction is considered. The transverse profile of the filaments is investigated numerically and analytically based on a one-dimensional model that represents the effect of stirring as a convergent flow. The dependence of the steady solutions on the Damkohler number and Lewis number is treated in detail. It is found that, below a critical Damkohler number Da(crit), the flame is quenched by the flow. The quenching transition appears as a result of a saddle-node bifurcation where the stable steady filament solution collides with an unstable one. The shape of the steady solutions for the concentration and temperature profiles changes with the Lewis number and the value of Da(crit) increases monotonically with the Lewis number. Properties of the solutions are studied analytically in the limit of large Damkohler number and for small and large Lewis number.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, to be published in Physica

    Algebras of functions on quantum weighted projective spaces are introduced, and the structure of quantum weighted projective lines or quantum teardrops are described in detail. In particular the presentation of the coordinate algebra of the quantum teardrop in terms of generators and relations and classification of irreducible *-representations are derived. The algebras are then analysed from the point of view of Hopf-Galois theory or the theory of quantum principal bundles. Fredholm modules and associated traces are constructed. C*-algebras of continuous functions on quantum weighted projective lines are described and their K-groups computed.Comment: 18 page

    Role of many-body entanglement in decoherence processes

    A pure state decoheres into a mixed state as it entangles with an environment. When an entangled two-mode system is embedded in a thermal environment, however, each mode may not be entangled with its environment by their simple linear interaction. We consider an exactly solvable model to study the dynamics of a total system, which is composed of an entangled two-mode system and a thermal environment, and also an array of infinite beam splitters. It is shown that many-body entanglement of the system and the environment plays a crucial role in the process of disentangling the system.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Group descent algorithms for nonconvex penalized linear and logistic regression models with grouped predictors

    Penalized regression is an attractive framework for variable selection problems. Often, variables possess a grouping structure, and the relevant selection problem is that of selecting groups, not individual variables. The group lasso has been proposed as a way of extending the ideas of the lasso to the problem of group selection. Nonconvex penalties such as SCAD and MCP have been proposed and shown to have several advantages over the lasso; these penalties may also be extended to the group selection problem, giving rise to group SCAD and group MCP methods. Here, we describe algorithms for fitting these models stably and efficiently. In addition, we present simulation results and real data examples comparing and contrasting the statistical properties of these methods
