The effect of adding Agaricus blazei to the diet of broilers on immunity, serum parameters, and antioxidant activity was evaluated. A total of 840 1-day-old chicks were used, distributed among five levels of a completely randomized design (0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20% A. blazei), with six replications and 28 birds per experimental unit. The weights of the thymus, spleen and cloacal bursa were not influenced (P > 0.05). Leukocytes, macrophages and nitric oxide were unaffected (P > 0.05), but at each supplementation level compared with the control, differences appeared in the percentages of eosinophils and macrophages (P 0.05) at 42 days. Hypocholesterolemic effect was demonstrated (P 0.05). The antioxidant activity of mushroom showed a positive linear effect (P < 0.05) on DPPH capture on day zero of meat cooling. The inclusion of A. blazei in the diet of broilers provided an immunostimulatory activity and hypocholesterolemic effect. Residual compounds with antioxidant activity were present in the meat, which may promote tissue protection of the animal in vivo, making possible the use of A. blazei as a natural additive.3742235224

Vertical distribution of the macrofauna and its relationship with physico-chemical parameters were studied in polluted sediments from the harbour of Ceuta. The samples were collected with cores (10 cm ˟ 17 cm ˟ 35 cm) by scuba divers. The following depths in the sediment column were included in the study: 0-2 cm, 2- 5 cm, 5-10 cm and more than 10 cm. The crustaceans Pariambus typicus Kröyer, 1844; Apseudes latreilli Milne-Edwards, 1820; Corophium runcicorne Della Valle, 1893; C. sextonae Crawford, 1937; the mollusc Parvicardium exiguum (Gmelin, 1791), and the polychaetes Pseudomalacoceros tridentata (Southern, 1914) and Exogone verrugera Cleparede, 1868 were found in the first 2 cm of the sediment, whereas the mollusc Loripes lacteus (L., 1758) and the polychaetes Platynereis dumerilii Audouin & Milne Edwards; 1833; Cirratulus cirratus (Muller; 1776) and Cirriformia tentaculata (Montagu; 1808) were dominant in deeper strata; and size increased with depth. A multivariate analysis showed that the percentage of silt and clays; the total organic matter; and especially; the maltenes/asphaltenes ratio; were the main factors affecting species' vertical distribution.

This work describes the tests conducted with a laboratory-scale high-flux solar simulator aiming to evaluate the performance of optical lenses made of silica glass when subjected to high-fluxes of radiation, and it allowed to compare their behaviour with the behaviour shown by lenses made of borosilicate glass (BK-7) which price is much lower. The irradiation tests reached durations up to 60 minutes, with continuous monitoring of the power irradiating each and of the temperature generated on it. All silica lenses have shown a good performance, contrarily to what was observed with the lenses made of borosilicate. In the work it is mentioned the possibility that the negative behaviour observed with the borosilicate lenses may be due to the fact that the radiation spectrum of a xenon arc lamp contains certain wavelengths that are not present in the solar radiation spectrum, and therefore it is suggested that future tests are conducted with real concentrated solar radiation and not with a simulator that artificially reproduces the solar energy distribution.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Inter-agency coordination of services for children and families - initial literature review

    Get PDF
Disadvantaged families living in poverty, especially those living in deprived neighborhoods where risks tend to accumulate, have diverse needs for support. Throughout Europe different models of service-coordination and integration exist, but a systematic overview of experiences and evidence on effectiveness is not available. The aim of this initial review is to: - identify facilitators and challenges at the interpersonal and at the structural-organizational level that are relevant to successful coordination, collaboration and integration of multiple services for young children (e.g. communication, case management, financial resources, policy measures); - identify models of working and domains for the development of a common framework; - summarize the potential impact of inter-agency working upon children, families and communities

Opinion dynamics: models, extensions and external effects

Recently, social phenomena have received a lot of attention not only from social scientists, but also from physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists, in the emerging interdisciplinary field of complex system science. Opinion dynamics is one of the processes studied, since opinions are the drivers of human behaviour, and play a crucial role in many global challenges that our complex world and societies are facing: global financial crises, global pandemics, growth of cities, urbanisation and migration patterns, and last but not least important, climate change and environmental sustainability and protection. Opinion formation is a complex process affected by the interplay of different elements, including the individual predisposition, the influence of positive and negative peer interaction (social networks playing a crucial role in this respect), the information each individual is exposed to, and many others. Several models inspired from those in use in physics have been developed to encompass many of these elements, and to allow for the identification of the mechanisms involved in the opinion formation process and the understanding of their role, with the practical aim of simulating opinion formation and spreading under various conditions. These modelling schemes range from binary simple models such as the voter model, to multi-dimensional continuous approaches. Here, we provide a review of recent methods, focusing on models employing both peer interaction and external information, and emphasising the role that less studied mechanisms, such as disagreement, has in driving the opinion dynamics.
