Systematic uncertainties in the precise determination of the strangeness magnetic moment of the nucleon
Systematic uncertainties in the recent precise determination of the
strangeness magnetic moment of the nucleon are identified and quantified. In
summary, G_M^s = -0.046 \pm 0.019 \mu_N.Comment: Invited presentation at PAVI '04, International Workshop on Parity

The war is not yet won
In this issue of Diabetes Care, Selvin and Ali have done a masterful job of exploring and explaining both the rise in the incidence of diabetes over 20 years and the fall in the incidence of diabetes over the last 5 years in the U.S. You may want to skip this and just read their article. The bottom line is that we as clinicians can confirm that they, as epidemiologists, have almost certainly gotten it right. Importantly, their analysis has critical implications for policy makers

Electromagnetic Form Factors with FLIC fermions
The Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action provides a new form of
nonperturbative O(a) improvement and allows efficient access to the light
quark-mass regime. FLIC fermions enable the construction of the
nonperturbatively O(a)-improved conserved vector current without the
difficulties associated with the fine tuning of the improvement coefficients.
The simulations are performed with an O(a^2) mean-field improved
plaquette-plus-rectangle gluon action on a 20^3 x 40 lattice with a lattice
spacing of 0.128 fm, enabling the first simulation of baryon form factors at
light quark masses on a large volume lattice.
Magnetic moments, electric charge radii and magnetic radii are extracted from
these form factors, and show interesting chiral nonanalytic behavior in the
light quark mass regime.Comment: Presented by J.Zanotti at the Workshop on Lattice Hadron Physics,

Light Quark Simulations With FLIC Fermions
Hadron masses are calculated in quenched lattice QCD in order to probe the
scaling behavior of a novel fat-link clover fermion action in which only the
irrelevant operators of the fermion action are constructed using APE-smeared
links. Light quark masses corresponding to an m_pi / m_rho ratio of 0.35 are
considered to assess the exceptional configuration problem of clover-fermion
actions. This Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action provides scaling
which is superior to mean-field improvement and offers advantages over
nonperturbative improvement, including reduced exceptional configurations.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, Lattice2002(QCD Spectrum and Quark Masses
Gravity-induced Wannier-Stark ladder in an optical lattice
We discuss the dynamics of ultracold atoms in an optical potential
accelerated by gravity. The positions and widths of the Wannier-Stark ladder of
resonances are obtained as metastable states. The metastable Wannier-Bloch
states oscillate in a single band with the Bloch period. The width of the
resonance gives the rate transition to the continuum.Comment: 5 pages + 8 eps figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Euclidean Distances, soft and spectral Clustering on Weighted Graphs
We define a class of Euclidean distances on weighted graphs, enabling to
perform thermodynamic soft graph clustering. The class can be constructed form
the "raw coordinates" encountered in spectral clustering, and can be extended
by means of higher-dimensional embeddings (Schoenberg transformations).
Geographical flow data, properly conditioned, illustrate the procedure as well
as visualization aspects.Comment: accepted for presentation (and further publication) at the ECML PKDD

Deterministic delivery of externally cold and precisely positioned single molecular ions
We present the preparation and deterministic delivery of a selectable number
of externally cold molecular ions. A laser cooled ensemble of Mg^+ ions
subsequently confined in several linear Paul traps inter-connected via a
quadrupole guide serves as a cold bath for a single or up to a few hundred
molecular ions. Sympathetic cooling embeds the molecular ions in the
crystalline structure. MgH^+ ions, that serve as a model system for a large
variety of other possible molecular ions, are cooled down close to the Doppler
limit and are positioned with an accuracy of one micrometer. After the
production process, severely compromising the vacuum conditions, the molecular
ion is efficiently transfered into nearly background-free environment. The
transfer of a molecular ion between different traps as well as the control of
the molecular ions in the traps is demonstrated. Schemes, optimized for the
transfer of a specific number of ions, are realized and their efficiencies are
evaluated. This versatile source applicable for broad charge-to-mass ratios of
externally cold and precisely positioned molecular ions can serve as a
container-free target preparation device well suited for diffraction or
spectroscopic measurements on individual molecular ions at high repetition
rates (kHz).Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
