    Increased plasma markers of oxidative stress are associated with coronary heart disease in males with diabetes mellitus and with 10-year risk in a prospective sample of males

    Background: Increased oxidative stress is associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). We examined the association between plasma markers of oxidative stress and CHD in a cross-sectional sample of patients with diabetes and prospective CHD risk in a sample of men predominantly without diabetes. Methods: Plasma total antioxidant status (TAOS) and the ratio of oxidized LDL (Ox-LDL) to LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) were determined in a cross-section of 761 Caucasian individuals with diabetes (UDACS study). Plasma TAOS was also determined in 310 baseline samples from a 10-year prospective cohort of 3012 healthy males (NPHSII). Results: Within UDACS, males with CHD had lower mean (SD) plasma TAOS [no CHD, 43.4 (13.2)%; CHD, 40.3 (13.8)%; P = 0.04]. The prevalence of CHD was higher in the lowest compared with the upper quartiles (32.7% vs 19.7%; P = 0.004). We observed a significant association between plasma Ox-LDL:LDL-C and CHD status [no CHD vs CHD, 16.9 (3.1) vs 19.3 (5.0) units/mmol; P = 0.04], with the prevalence of CHD being higher among men in the upper compared with lower quartiles (18.4% vs 35.1%; P = 0.003). No association was observed in females. In NPHSII, TAOS was lower in those who developed CHD [35.1 (8.0)% vs 37.1 (7.9)%; P = 0.04]. The odds ratio for CHD in the lowest compared with the upper quartile was 1.91 (95% confidence interval, 0.99–3.70; P = 0.04). This remained unchanged after adjustment for classic risk factors. Conclusions: A cross-sectional and prospective association exists between baseline plasma measures of oxidative stress and CHD risk. The association with prospective CHD risk remained after adjustment for "traditional" risk factors, implying an independent role for oxidative stress in CHD risk

    Ultrasonic Stimulation of Mouse Skin Reverses the Healing Delays in Diabetes and Aging by Activation of Rac1

    Chronic skin-healing defects are one of the leading challenges to lifelong well-being, affecting 2–5% of populations. Chronic wound formation is linked to age and diabetes and frequently leads to major limb amputation. Here we identify a strategy to reverse fibroblast senescence and improve healing rates. In healthy skin, fibronectin activates Rac1 in fibroblasts, causing migration into the wound bed, and driving wound contraction. We discover that mechanical stimulation of the skin with ultrasound can overturn healing defects by activating a calcium/CamKinaseII/Tiam1/Rac1 pathway that substitutes for fibronectin-dependent signaling and promotes fibroblast migration. Treatment of diabetic and aged mice recruits fibroblasts to the wound bed and reduces healing times by 30%, restoring healing rates to those observed in young, healthy animals. Ultrasound treatment is equally effective in rescuing the healing defects of animals lacking fibronectin receptors, and can be blocked by pharmacological inhibition of the CamKinaseII pathway. Finally, we discover that the migration defects of fibroblasts from human venous leg ulcer patients can be reversed by ultrasound, demonstrating that the approach is applicable to human chronic samples. By demonstrating that this alternative Rac1 pathway can substitute for that normally operating in the skin, we identify future opportunities for management of chronic wounds

    Reducing stomatal density in barley improves drought tolerance without impacting on yield.

    The epidermal patterning factor (EPF) family of secreted signalling peptides regulate the frequency of stomatal development in model dicot and basal land plant species. Here we identify and manipulate the expression of a barley ortholog and demonstrate that when overexpressed HvEPF1 limits entry to, and progression through, the stomatal development pathway. Despite substantial reductions in leaf gas exchange, barley plants with approximately half of the normal number of stomata show no reductions in grain yield. In addition, HvEPF1OE barley lines exhibit significantly enhanced water use efficiency, drought tolerance and soil water conservation properties. Our results demonstrate the potential of manipulating stomatal frequency for the protection and optimisation of cereal crop yields under future drier environments

    Fission barriers and asymmetric ground states in the relativistic mean field theory

    The symmetric and asymmetric fission path for 240Pu, 232Th, and 226Ra is investigated within the relativistic mean field model. Standard parametrizations which are well fitted to nuclear ground state properties are found to deliver reasonable qualitative and quantitative features of fission, comparable to similar nonrelativstic calculations. Furthermore, stable octupole deformations in the ground states of Radium isotopes are investigated. They are found in a series of isotopes, qualitatively in agreement with nonrelativistic models.     Weak ferromagnetism with very large canting in a chiral lattice: (pyrimidine)2FeCl2

    The transition metal coordination compound (pyrimidine)2FeCl2 crystallizes in a chiral lattice, space group I 4_1 2 2 (or I4_3 2 2). Combined magnetization, Mossbauer spectroscopy and powder neutron diffraction studies reveal that it is a canted antiferromagnet below T_N = 6.4 K with an unusually large canting of the magnetic moments of 14 deg. from their general antiferromagnetic alignment, one of the largest reported to date. This results in weak ferromagnetism with a ferromagnetic component of 1 mu_B. The large canting is due to the interplay between the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction and the local single-ion anisotropy in the chiral lattice. The magnetically ordered structure of (pyrimidine)2FeCl2, however, is not chiral. The implications of these findings for the search of molecule based materials exhibiting chiral magnetic ordering is discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Bulk and Boundary Dynamics in BTZ Black Holes

    Recently, the AdS/CFT conjecture of Maldacena has been investigated in Lorentzian signature by Balasubramanian et. al. We extend this investigation to Lorentzian BTZ black hole spacetimes, and study the bulk and boundary behaviour of massive scalar fields both in the non-extremal and extremal case. Using the bulk-boundary correspondence, we also evaluate the two-point correlator of operators coupling to the scalar field at the boundary of the spacetime, and find that it satisfies thermal periodic boundary conditions relevant to the Hawking temperature of the BTZ black hole.Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX file. v2: references added. v3: some typo corrections and minor clarification

    Improvement of information technology tools to collect, process and analyse data on wildlife population

    ENETWILD consortium with the collaboration of the MammalNet project2 has promoted some informatic tools to improve the data collection of wildlife distribution and abundance: iMammalia; MammalWeb and Agouti. Here we update the activities in relation to (i) the new languages implemented; (ii) new functionalities, (iii) and the improvement and testing of the artificial intelligence module to identify species in Agouti. The iMammalia app is now available in 17 languages with at least two more to be added soon. MammalWeb is available in six languages with more to be added soon. Agouti is available in seven languages. iMammalia automates data transfer to the global database GBIF, and MammalWeb will consider a similar approach in the near future. Technical improvements were made to meet the needs of iMammalia as a carcass reporting app for wild boar, which will favour early awareness in case of ASF outbreak. As for density estimation through camera trapping, processing of big number of images by hand is tedious, and to facilitate the annotation process Agouti offers and has continuously improved automatic species recognition using Artificial Intelligence (AI).     Stochastic Production Of Kink-Antikink Pairs In The Presence Of An Oscillating Background

    We numerically investigate the production of kink-antikink pairs in a (1+1)(1+1) dimensional ϕ4\phi^4 field theory subject to white noise and periodic driving. The twin effects of noise and periodic driving acting in conjunction lead to considerable enhancement in the kink density compared to the thermal equilibrium value, for low dissipation coefficients and for a specific range of frequencies of the oscillating background. The dependence of the kink-density on the temperature of the heat bath, the amplitude of the oscillating background and value of the dissipation coefficient is also investigated.
