Les données bibliographiques (plus de 180 références) concernant l'ultrastructure des monogènes, en microscopie électronique à balayage (MEB) et microscopie électronique à transmission (MET), sont présentées sous la forme de deux listes. La liste des espèces étudiées indique pour chaque espèce les organes qui ont été décrits en microscopie électronique et la référence; plus de 60 espèces de Monopisthocotylea et 70 espèces de Polyopisthocotylea sont citées. La liste des organes indique pour chaque organe quelles espèces ont été étudiées et la référence. Les structures sont classées en: 1. Organes externes (morphologie externe en MEB, tégument, récepteurs tégumentaires, photorécepteurs, glandes, pièces sclérifiées du hapteur). 2. Organes internes non reproducteurs (appareil digestif, protonéphridies, cellules nerveuses). 3. A GIS-based method for household recruitment in a prospective pesticide exposure study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recent advances in GIS technology and remote sensing have provided new opportunities to collect ecologic data on agricultural pesticide exposure. Many pesticide studies have used historical or records-based data on crops and their associated pesticide applications to estimate exposure by measuring residential proximity to agricultural fields. Very few of these studies collected environmental and biological samples from study participants. One of the reasons for this is the cost of identifying participants who reside near study fields and analyzing samples obtained from them. In this paper, we present a cost-effective, GIS-based method for crop field selection and household recruitment in a prospective pesticide exposure study in a remote location. For the most part, our multi-phased approach was carried out in a research facility, but involved two brief episodes of fieldwork for ground truthing purposes. This method was developed for a larger study designed to examine the validity of indirect pesticide exposure estimates by comparing measured exposures in household dust, water and urine with records-based estimates that use crop location, residential proximity and pesticide application data. The study focused on the pesticide atrazine, a broadleaf herbicide used in corn production and one of the most widely-used pesticides in the U.S.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We successfully used a combination of remotely-sensed data, GIS-based methods and fieldwork to select study fields and recruit participants in Illinois, a state with high corn production and heavy atrazine use. Our several-step process consisted of the identification of potential study fields and residential areas using aerial photography; verification of crop patterns and land use via site visits; development of a GIS-based algorithm to define recruitment areas around crop fields; acquisition of geocoded household-level data within each recruitment area from a commercial vendor; and confirmation of final participant household locations via ground truthing. The use of these procedures resulted in a sufficient sample of participants from 14 recruitment areas in seven Illinois counties.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>One of the challenges in pesticide research is the identification and recruitment of study participants, which is time consuming and costly, especially when the study site is in a remote location. We have demonstrated how GIS-based processes can be used to recruit participants, increase efficiency and enhance accuracy. The method that we used ultimately made it possible to collect biological samples from a specific demographic group within strictly defined exposure areas, with little advance knowledge of the location or population.</p
Religious vs. Secular Communities: Sources of Social Support for Emerging Adult Black Gay and Bisexual Men
This research investigates factors that contribute to emerging adult black gay and bisexual men’s sources of social support. Participants were 20 Black, gay/bisexual men between 18-25 years old (Mage = 22.8, SD = 1.7). Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews and utilized grounded theory to determine intersectionality between participants’ religious upbringing as well as their racial, spiritual, sexual, and HIV identities. Participants who self-identified as bisexual continued to seek social support within churches despite having endured repeated exposure to negative religious rhetoric pertaining to same-sex behavior in religious settings. Participants who self-identified as queer did not seek social support within churches. While a majority of participants who self-identified as gay did not seek social support from churches, gay participants who did seek social support from churches were also HIV positive. A majority of participants indicated having to seek social support from communities that did not encompass all of their identities (racial, sexual, religious/spiritual, HIV) and expressed feelings of not belonging or being fully accepted by those communities as a result. Data from this research indicates a need for further research examining Black men’s sexual and religious identity self-labeling tendencies as well as HIV status as predictors of likelihood to seek social support in religious communities, specifically, black churches. A greater understanding of the factors that contribute to emerging adult, Black, gay/bisexual men’s selection of communities for social support may benefit community organizers in the development of groups that could act as sources of resiliency, especially for individuals who are living with HIV
External vs. Innate: Sources of Resiliency Among Emerging Adults, Black Gay and Bisexual Men
The purpose of this research was to examine the main sources and origins of resiliency that are present among Black gay and bisexual men. Resiliency refers to one’s response to adversity and ability to positively adapt to difficult situations. Twenty participants ranging in age between 18-25 years old (M = 22.8 years, SD = 1.7 years) participated in a semi-structured interview. Participants indicated varying sources of resiliency, which they utilize to encounter hardships. Innate sources (i.e., I was born this way) and external sources (i.e., music, my grandmother’s spirit) were conveyed by participants as mechanisms to overcome adversity. The current findings seek to increase social understanding of the means through which these emerging adults overcome adversity, in effort to decrease social marginalization, stigmatization, and discrimination
Rofecoxib and cardiovascular adverse events in adjuvant treatment of colorectal cancer
Background
Selective cyclooxygenase inhibitors may retard the progression of cancer, but they
have enhanced thrombotic potential. We report on cardiovascular adverse events in
patients receiving rofecoxib to reduce rates of recurrence of colorectal cancer.
Methods
All serious adverse events that were cardiovascular thrombotic events were reviewed
in 2434 patients with stage II or III colorectal cancer participating in a randomized,
placebo-controlled trial of rofecoxib, 25 mg daily, started after potentially curative
tumor resection and chemotherapy or radiotherapy as indicated. The trial was terminated
prematurely owing to worldwide withdrawal of rofecoxib. To examine possible
persistent risks, we examined cardiovascular thrombotic events reported up to 24
months after the trial was closed.
Results
The median duration of active treatment was 7.4 months. The 1167 patients receiving
rofecoxib and the 1160 patients receiving placebo were well matched, with a median
follow-up period of 33.0 months (interquartile range, 27.6 to 40.1) and 33.4 months
(27.7 to 40.4), respectively. Of the 23 confirmed cardiovascular thrombotic events,
16 occurred in the rofecoxib group during or within 14 days after the treatment
period, with an estimated relative risk of 2.66 (from the Cox proportional-hazards
model; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03 to 6.86; P = 0.04). Analysis of the Antiplatelet
Trialists’ Collaboration end point (the combined incidence of death from
cardiovascular, hemorrhagic, and unknown causes; of nonfatal myocardial infarction;
and of nonfatal ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke) gave an unadjusted relative
risk of 1.60 (95% CI, 0.57 to 4.51; P = 0.37). Fourteen more cardiovascular thrombotic
events, six in the rofecoxib group, were reported within the 2 years after trial
closure, with an overall unadjusted relative risk of 1.50 (95% CI, 0.76 to 2.94;
P = 0.24). Four patients in the rofecoxib group and two in the placebo group died
from thrombotic causes during or within 14 days after the treatment period, and
during the follow-up period, one patient in the rofecoxib group and five patients in
the placebo group died from cardiovascular causes.
Conclusions
Rofecoxib therapy was associated with an increased frequency of adverse cardiovascular
events among patients with a median study treatment of 7.4 months’ duration.

NJ Land Link (http://njlandlink.org) is a new interactive website created to improve access to farmland and farming opportunities in New Jersey. The website allows farmland owners to list characteristics of their properties and terms of availability (e.g., sale, lease). Critical Foundations for Civic Engagement: Reimagining Civic Learning for a University Honors Program
Scholars are calling attention to shortcomings of service-learning, including the development of civic skills and adoption of a social change framework. Informed by this literature, this article uses a mixed-methods case study to detail the development, and initial outcomes, of a civic engagement course intended to lay a critical foundation for future service. This study documents the process of reimagining the class, formerly organized as a service project, and course evaluations and reflections are used to assess outcomes. Initial assessment signals impact in challenging previous assumptions about service, understanding the multifaceted nature of civic engagement, and motivating future responsible engagement
Impact of supported employment on service costs and income of people with mental health needs
Background: A 12-month study of UK supported employment providers found that 77 (54.6%) of the participants in the study remained unemployed, 32 (22.7%) got jobs and 32 (22.7%) retained the jobs they held at the outset.
Aims: To explore the impact of moving into employment on service use, earnings, benefits and tax allowances claimed.
Methods: Service use and frequency were measured at baseline and 12 months. Comparisons paid particular attention to the differences between people entering work and those who remained unemployed. Costs were analysed from a government perspective (excluding earnings) and a societal perspective (excluding welfare benefits and taxes).
Results: People who entered work reduced their consumption of mental health services (p<0.001). However, use of supported employment increased (p=0.04), in contrast to falling use by people who remained unemployed (p<0.001) and those who had been working for more than one year (p=0.002). The increase in earnings for those entering work (p=0.02) was not offset by a similar reduction in benefits.
Conclusion: This indicates that mental health services may make savings as a result of their clients engaging in paid work. It raises questions about the optimal nature and organization of employment support for this service user group
A Large, First-Year, Introductory, Multi-Sectional Biological Concepts of Health Course Designed to Develop Skills and Enhance Deeper Learning
Large first-year biology classes, with their heavy emphasis on factual content, contribute to low student engagement and misrepresent the dynamic, interdisciplinary nature of biological science. We sought to redesign a course to deliver fundamental biology curriculum through the study of health, promote skills development, and encourage a deeper level of learning for a large, multi-section first-year class. We describe the Biological Concepts of Health course designed to encourage higher-order learning and teach oral communication and independent learning skills to large numbers of first-year students. We used the Blooming Biology Tool to determine the cognitive skills level assessed in the newly developed course and the courses it replaced. This evidence-based approach demonstrated that our new course design achieved the goal of encouraging a deeper level of cognition, and further, successfully introduced both oral communication and independent learning skills in large first-year classes.
En mettant l’emphase sur un contenu factuel, les grandes classes de biologie de première année contribuent au faible engagement des élèves et donnent une représentation imprécise de la nature dynamique et interdisciplinaire des sciences de la biologie. Afin d’offrir un programme fondamental en biologie par l’étude de la santé, de promouvoir le perfectionnement des compétences et d’encourager un niveau d’apprentissage marqué, nous avons repensé un cours pour une grande classe de première année contenant plusieurs sous-groupes. Nous décrivons le cours « Biological Concepts of Health » conçu pour encourager l’apprentissage supérieur, ainsi que pour enseigner la communication orale et les habiletés d’apprentissage individualisé à un grand nombre d’étudiants de première année. Pour déterminer le niveau d’habiletés cognitives évalué dans ce cours nouvellement conçu et les cours qu’il remplace, nous avons utilisé le « Blooming Biology Tool ». Cette approche éprouvée démontre que ce nouveau cours a atteint son but d’encourager l’approfondissement des connaissances et, par ailleurs, a réussi à introduire la communication orale, de même que les habiletés d’apprentissage individualisé aux grandes classes de première année
