    Response properties in a model for granular matter

    We investigate the response properties of granular media in the framework of the so-called {\em Random Tetris Model}. We monitor, for different driving procedures, several quantities: the evolution of the density and of the density profiles, the ageing properties through the two-times correlation functions and the two-times mean-square distance between the potential energies, the response function defined in terms of the difference in the potential energies of two replica driven in two slightly different ways. We focus in particular on the role played by the spatial inhomogeneities (structures) spontaneously emerging during the compaction process, the history of the sample and the driving procedure. It turns out that none of these ingredients can be neglected for the correct interpretation of the experimental or numerical data. We discuss the problem of the optimization of the compaction process and we comment on the validity of our results for the description of granular materials in a thermodynamic framework.Comment: 22 pages, 35 eps files (21 figures

    Anomalous aging phenomena caused by drift velocities

    We demonstrate via several examples that a uniform drift velocity gives rise to anomalous aging, characterized by a specific form for the two-time correlation functions, in a variety of statistical-mechanical systems far from equilibrium. Our first example concerns the oscillatory phase observed recently in a model of competitive learning. Further examples, where the proposed theory is exact, include the voter model and the Ohta-Jasnow-Kawasaki theory for domain growth in any dimension, and a theory for the smoothing of sandpile surfaces.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures.     Memory Effects in Granular Material

    We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of memory effects in vibration-induced compaction of granular materials. In particular, the response of the system to an abrupt change in shaking intensity is measured. At short times after the perturbation a granular analog of aging in glasses is observed. Using a simple two-state model, we are able to explain this short-time response. We also discuss the possibility for the system to obey an approximate pseudo-fluctuation-dissipation theorem relationship and relate our work to earlier experimental and theoretical studies of the problem.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, reference list change

    The Effect of Pure State Structure on Nonequilibrium Dynamics

    Motivated by short-range Ising spin glasses, we review some rigorous results and their consequences for the relation between the number/nature of equilibrium pure states and nonequilibrium dynamics. Two of the consequences for spin glass dynamics following a deep quench to a temperature with broken spin flip symmetry are: (1) Almost all initial configurations lie on the boundary between the basins of attraction of multiple pure states. (2) Unless there are uncountably many pure states with almost all pairs having zero overlap, there can be no equilibration to a pure state as time goes to infinity. We discuss the relevance of these results to the difficulty of equilibration of spin glasses. We also review some results concerning the ``nature vs. nurture'' problem of whether the large-time behavior of both ferromagnets and spin glasses following a deep quench is determined more by the initial configuration or by the dynamics realization.Comment: 20 page

    Gemini multi-conjugate adaptive optics system review II: Commissioning, operation and overall performance

    The Gemini Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics System - GeMS, a facility instrument mounted on the Gemini South telescope, delivers a uniform, near diffraction limited images at near infrared wavelengths (0.95 microns- 2.5 microns) over a field of view of 120 arc seconds. GeMS is the first sodium layer based multi laser guide star adaptive optics system used in astronomy. It uses five laser guide stars distributed on a 60 arc seconds square constellation to measure for atmospheric distortions and two deformable mirrors to compensate for it. In this paper, the second devoted to describe the GeMS project, we present the commissioning, overall performance and operational scheme of GeMS. Performance of each sub-system is derived from the commissioning results. The typical image quality, expressed in full with half maximum, Strehl ratios and variations over the field delivered by the system are then described. A discussion of the main contributor to performance limitation is carried-out.     Literature-based discovery of diabetes- and ROS-related targets

    Abstract Background Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known mediators of cellular damage in multiple diseases including diabetic complications. Despite its importance, no comprehensive database is currently available for the genes associated with ROS. Methods We present ROS- and diabetes-related targets (genes/proteins) collected from the biomedical literature through a text mining technology. A web-based literature mining tool, SciMiner, was applied to 1,154 biomedical papers indexed with diabetes and ROS by PubMed to identify relevant targets. Over-represented targets in the ROS-diabetes literature were obtained through comparisons against randomly selected literature. The expression levels of nine genes, selected from the top ranked ROS-diabetes set, were measured in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) of diabetic and non-diabetic DBA/2J mice in order to evaluate the biological relevance of literature-derived targets in the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy. Results SciMiner identified 1,026 ROS- and diabetes-related targets from the 1,154 biomedical papers (http://jdrf.neurology.med.umich.edu/ROSDiabetes/). Fifty-three targets were significantly over-represented in the ROS-diabetes literature compared to randomly selected literature. These over-represented targets included well-known members of the oxidative stress response including catalase, the NADPH oxidase family, and the superoxide dismutase family of proteins. Eight of the nine selected genes exhibited significant differential expression between diabetic and non-diabetic mice. For six genes, the direction of expression change in diabetes paralleled enhanced oxidative stress in the DRG.     Damping of low-energy excitations of a trapped Bose condensate at finite temperatures

    We present the theory of damping of low-energy excitations of a trapped Bose condensate at finite temperatures, where the damping is provided by the interaction of these excitations with the thermal excitations. We emphasize the key role of stochastization in the behavior of the thermal excitations for damping in non-spherical traps. The damping rates of the lowest excitations, following from our theory, are in fair agreement with the data of recent JILA and MIT experiments.
