    Boar rearing: the influence of group vs individual penning from weaning to 27 weeks of age

    We compared mating performance and soundness of feet and legs of boars which were reared in group vs individual pens. Individually penned boars consumed more feed from 6 to 12 weeks of age and were heavier at 12 weeks of age.     Case report of a cervical myelomalacia caused by a thoracolumbar intradural disc herniation leading to intracranial hypotension

    A 50-year-old patient was admitted with symptoms of intracranial hypotension. MRI revealed a cervical myelomalacia caused by engorged epidural veins leading to a stenosis of the spinal canal. This condition is rarely described in patients with hydrocephalus and ventricular shunts suffering from chronic overdrainage. However, the reason in this patient was a CSF leak caused by an intradural disc herniation at T12/L1. After surgery, symptoms resolved and the cervical myelomalacia and the swollen epidural veins disappeared on postoperative MRI. In patients with engorged cervical epidural veins without a ventricular shunt, a CSF leak has to be considered

    Ecological Characteristics of Streams in the Barrenlands near Lac de Gras, N.W.T., Canada

    We examined spatiotemporal variation in the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of pristine streams that represent a range of conditions near Lac de Gras in the Barrenlands region of the Northwest Territories, Canada. Principal component analysis organized streams into four groups on the basis of seven physical characteristics. Despite broad differences among groups in physical characteristics, variation in chemical and biological characteristics was generally not large, with only pH and coarse particulate organic matter differing among the four groups. Nevertheless, several chemical and biological variables were correlated with physical characteristics, particularly measures of stream size (bankfull width and depth, drainage area, and stream discharge). Annual variability in climate affected stream temperature and discharge and influenced several biotic characteristics, particularly the growth of young-of-the-year arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus). Barrenland streams share basic characteristics of Alaskan tundra streams, as a result of similar climatic regimes. Key differences between the two areas, however, appear related to the lake-outlet nature of the Barrenland streams, which may contribute to higher growth of young-of-the-year arctic grayling than would be expected from regional climate.On a étudié la variation spatio-temporelle dans les caractéristiques physiques, chimiques et biologiques de cours d'eau vierges qui témoignent d'une gamme de conditions prÚs du lac de Gras dans la région des Barrenlands, dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest, au Canada. L'analyse des composantes principales a divisé les cours d'eau en quatre groupes, d'aprÚs sept caractéristiques physiques. En dépit de différences marquées dans ces derniÚres entre les groupes, la variation dans les attributs chimiques et biologiques n'était généralement pas trÚs grande, avec seulement le pH et les grosses particules organiques qui montraient des différences entre les quatre groupes. Plusieurs variables chimiques et biologiques étaient néanmoins corrélées avec les attributs physiques, en particulier les mesures de la taille des cours d'eau (largeur et profondeur du débordement, aire de drainage et débit). La variabilité annuelle du climat avait une incidence sur la température et le débit des cours d'eau et elle influençait plusieurs caractéristiques biotiques, en particulier la croissance des jeunes de l'année chez l'ombre arctique. Les cours d'eau des Barrenlands ont en commun les caractéristiques fondamentales des cours d'eau de la toundra alaskienne, vu qu'ils sont soumis à des régimes climatiques similaires. Les différences majeures entre les deux régions semblent cependant liées au fait que la décharge des cours d'eau des Barrenlands se fait dans un lac, ce qui pourrait contribuer à une croissance des jeunes de l'année chez l'ombre arctique plus forte que le climat régional ne le laisserait croire

    Wild Red Deer Benefit the Conservation of European Semi-Natural Open Habitats

    Traditional land use practices have shaped European landscapes for millennia. Agricultural intensification and declining popularity of pastoral farming in the past century have resulted in a tremendous loss of extensively used open landscapes and associated biodiversity. Today, conservation management needs to prevent secondary succession of many open habitats. Large or inaccessible target areas unsuitable for conventional conservation measures might benefit from grazing by wild herbivores, which do not require fencing nor regular welfare monitoring. In a military training area in Germany, we studied the quantitative and qualitative effects of wild red deer in two protected open habitat types (lowland hay meadows and European dry heaths) based on grazing exclusion experiments over three years. Using movable exclusion cages, we showed that the amount of biomass annually removed by red deer was similar to the forage removal in livestock-based conservation grazing systems. Mown grasslands were particularly attractive to red deer owing to enhanced productivity and forage quality, suggesting that red deer grazing activities can be influenced by mowing. In addition, we compared the vegetation development in grasslands and heathlands with and without red deer grazing using open and permanently fenced plots. Grassland plant diversity decreased in fenced plots. In both habitat types, different structural vegetation characteristics, e.g. increasing sward and litter height, indicated successional developments when red deer grazing was excluded. Our results substantiate that allowing red deer access to open landscapes could not only alleviate potential conflicts with forestry, but can also promote open vegetation structure and diversity, thus providing a valuable contribution to the conservation management of semi-natural habitats

    QualitÀt des Weidefutters in der ökologischen Milchviehhaltung

    Grazing of dairy cows is mandatory in organic farming. However, as in conventional farming there is a tendency to increase milk yield per cows by employing other feeding strategies than grazing. On-farm research was initiated on organic dairy farms in Lower Saxony to investigate the current practice of grassland utilization and dairy husbandry and to explore the potential of grazing for milk production. The results show that with an increased focus on grazing of dairy cows there is considerable room for more milk being produced from grazed grass. An in-depth analysis of the spatio-temporal pattern of the quality of the herbage on offer revealed steadily high net energy and protein concentrations almost irrespective of the sward botanical composition and the season of sampling. Research is needed to improve grazing management strategies in organic farming to make better use of the high potential of grazed grasslands and thereby increase the sustainability of milk production

    Cilengitide: an RGD pentapeptide αΜÎČ3 and αΜÎČ5 integrin inhibitor in development for glioblastoma and other malignancies

    Cilengitide, a cyclicized arginine-glycine-aspartic acid-containing pentapeptide, potently blocks αΜÎČ3 and αΜÎČ5 integrin activation. Integrins are upregulated in many malignancies and mediate a wide variety of tumor-stroma interactions. Cilengitide and other integrin-targeting therapeutics have preclinical activity against many cancer subtypes including glioblastoma (GBM), the most common and deadliest CNS tumor. Cilengitide is active against orthotopic GBM xenografts and can augment radiotherapy and chemotherapy in these models. In Phase I and II GBM trials, cilengitide and the combination of cilengitide with standard temozolomide and radiation demonstrate consistent antitumor activity and a favorable safety profile. Cilengitide is currently under evaluation in a pivotal, randomized Phase III study (Cilengitide in Combination With Temozolomide and Radiotherapy in Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma Phase III Randomized Clinical Trial [CENTRIC]) for newly diagnosed GBM. In addition, randomized controlled Phase II studies with cilengitide are ongoing for non-small-cell lung cancer and squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.     Modular total syntheses of thymifodioic/incanic acids

    The first total synthesis of the bioactive natural product 2,6-(E,E)-thymifodioic acid, also called incanic acid, and its stereoisomers is described. An unified, iterative and modular strategy was envisioned, achieving the synthesis of the goals products after five reaction steps in an overall yield ranging from 8% to 16%.     Cervicothoracic Intradural Arachnoid Cyst Misdiagnosed as Motor Neuron Disease

    Recognizing syndromes which mimic ALS is crucial both to avoid giving this diagnosis erroneously and since there may be appropriate treatments. We report a 63-year-old woman diagnosed with possible ALS five years ago based on upper and lower motor neuron signs with typical electrophysiology and normal cranial MRI. At reassessment, spinal MRI revealed a cervicothoracic cyst with cord compression that was successfully treated neurosurgically. Histopathology confirmed an arachnoid origin as suspected from MRI. Spinal cysts may mimic ALS and need to be thoroughly excluded by appropriate imaging
