Series: Management and Industrial EngineeringThis study aims to explore the implications of the SA8000 standard in the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies and practices in Portuguese companies. Although this is not a recent issue, it is a subject that has motivated a growing interest on the part of the business and academic community. CSR should be seen as a new business management model, which includes universal human values as well as ethical decisions that ensure the satisfaction of the interests and needs of all stakeholders and the community in general. Regarding the empirical aspect of this research, a qualitative approach was followed through the application of a semi-structured interview to certified and not certified companies by SA8000 standard, in order to understand possible disparities with regard to the implementation of CSR policies and practices. Although the certification is the guarantee of the commitment of the companies with the CSR, the truth is that this is seen by the companies as a form of differentiation in the market. In general terms, it can be concluded that the policies and practices of CSR do not differ in relation to certification, which means that all companies have the possibility of making a difference by being socially responsible.Delfina Gomes acknowledges that this study was conducted at the Research Center in Political Science (UID/CPO/0758/2019), University of Minho/University of Évora, and was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and the Portuguese Ministry of Education and Science through national funds

Top-down regulation, climate and multi-decadal changes in coastal zoobenthos communities in two Baltic Sea areas

The structure of many marine ecosystems has changed substantially during recent decades, as a result of overexploitation, climate change and eutrophication. Despite of the apparent ecological and economical importance of coastal areas and communities, this aspect has received relatively little attention in coastal systems. Here we assess the temporal development of zoobenthos communities in two areas on the Swedish Baltic Sea coast during 30 years, and relate their development to changes in climate, eutrophication and top-down regulation from fish. Both communities show substantial structural changes, with a decrease in marine polychaetes and species sensitive to increased water temperatures. Concurrently, opportunistic species tolerant to environmental perturbation have increased in abundance. Species composition show a similar temporal development in both communities and significant changes in species composition occurred in both data sets in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The change in species composition was associated with large scale changes in climate (salinity and water temperature) and to the structure of the local fish community, whereas we found no effects of nutrient loading or ambient nutrient concentrations. Our results suggest that these coastal zoobenthos communities have gone through substantial structural changes over the last 30 years, resulting in communities of different species composition with potentially different ecological functions. We hence suggest that the temporal development of coastal zoobenthos communities should be assessed in light of prevailing climatic conditions considering the potential for top-down effects exerted by local fish communities

What explains the extent and content of social disclosures in Swedish municipalities' annual reports

Public awareness and interest in environmental and social issues as well as increased attention in the mass media have resulted in a higher demand for social disclosures from organisations. The aim of this study is to explain the extent and variation of content in social disclosures among Swedish municipalities. The empirical data is based on annual reports and archive data from official statistics. In this study we take an eclectic approach, and use a multi-theoretical framework in order to explain the content and extent of social disclosures. The statistical analyses show that the extent of social disclosures is associated with size, tax base, tax rate, financial performance and political majority. The study shows that there are significant differences between municipalities regarding both extent and content of social disclosures
