    Serial Neuropsychological Assessment Toward a Reliable Concussion Protocol

    With more than 10,000 Sports Related Concussions (SRCs) per year at the collegiate level, interdisciplinary teams are often tasked with determining when an athlete may return to activity (Zuckerman et al., 2015). Due to neurochemical changes following an SRC, athletes are vulnerable to further injury if they suffer another head injury before given appropriate time to heal (Giza & Hovda, 2014). Cognitive testing is routinely utilized to detect the presence of cognitive dysfunction and aid in individualized treatment planning. Because athletes often demonstrate practice effects when retested, it is difficult to distinguish if the athlete is demonstrating cognitive dysfunction. Reliable Change Indices (RCIs) provide a systematic framework for interpreting the change in an individual’s scores over time. The present study sought to develop RCIs with a brief battery of pencil paper tests within the cognitive domains most impacted by SRC. Results indicated significant increases in test scores across various tests due to practice effect. Additionally, reliability coefficients varied significantly across tests, ranging from low to excellent. Reliable Change Indices were calculated and recorded below. Findings indicate the utility of many of the tests administered and provide context to more accurately interpret follow-up testing scores

    This qualitative case-study research investigated how Eastern European immigrant youth in a southern English public secondary school adjusted to and experienced the British educational system, which involves streaming students into levels of academic ability. The study focused on these students’ experiences of day-to-day life in a British secondary school and it explored the challenges and successes that they experienced. The study also investigated the experiences of teachers and administrators involved in the education of immigrant students. Through the use of student and faculty experiences, through recorded interviews, this study sought to understand how educators could improve the ways they are educating immigrant students

    Experienced tutors' deployment of thinking skills and what might be entailed in enhancing such skills

    In the context of research that reports weaknesses in adults' critical thinking skills, the primary aim was to examine adults' use of critical thinking skills that are described in taxonomies and to identify areas for development. Position papers written by an opportunity sample of 32 experienced adult educators formed the data for a descriptive sample survey design intended to reveal participants' use of critical thinking skills. Each 6000-word paper was written during a development programme that supported such skills. A content analysis of the papers revealed that when participants drew on personal and published ideas about learning to derive their proposals for change, they accepted the ideas uncritically, thereby implying that they might find it difficult to help learners to examine ideas critically. The evidence supports research that implies that critical thinking skills are unlikely to develop unless overall course design privileges the development of epistemological understanding (King and Kitchener 1994, Kuhn 1999). A fundamental assumption underlying the study is that this understanding influences effective citizenship and personal development, as well as employability. A proposition that merits attention in future research is that the development of epistemological understanding is largely neglected in current curricula in formal post-16 education

    Dependency of global mean precipitation on surface temperature

    Copyright © 2008 American Geophysical UnionWe investigate the causes of temperature dependent changes in global precipitation in contemporary General Circulation Models (GCMs) subjected to a doubling of atmospheric CO2 concentration. By analyzing the energy budget of the troposphere, we find that changes are dominated by processes robustly simulated by GCMs. Importantly, shortwave cloud feedbacks, whose uncertainty is largely responsible for the wide range of GCM temperature climate sensitivities, are shown to have little effect. This is because these mainly arise from the scattering of shortwave radiation that has little impact on the tropospheric heating that controls precipitation. Hence, we expect that the range of simulated precipitation sensitivities to temperature will not change greatly in future GCMs, despite the recent suggestion that satellite observations indicate that GCM precipitation changes are significantly in error

    Automated one-loop calculations with GoSam 2.0

    We present the version 2.0 of the program GoSam, which is a public program package to compute one-loop corrections to multi-particle processes. The extended version of the "Binoth-Les-Houches-Accord" interface to Monte Carlo programs is also implemented. This allows a large flexibility regarding the combination of the code with various Monte Carlo programs to produce fully differential NLO results, including the possibility of parton showering and hadronisation.     NLO QCD corrections to the production of Higgs plus two jets at the LHC

    We present the calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the associated production of a Higgs boson and two jets, in the infinite top-mass limit. We discuss the technical details of the computation and we show the numerical impact of the radiative corrections on several observables at the LHC. The results are obtained by using a fully automated framework for fixed order NLO QCD calculations based on the interplay of the packages GoSam and Sherpa. The evaluation of the virtual corrections constitutes an application of the d-dimensional integrand-level reduction to theories with higher dimensional operators. We also present first results for the one-loop matrix elements of the partonic processes with a quark-pair in the final state, which enter the hadronic production of a Higgs boson together with three jets in the infinite top-mass approximation.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, references added, published in Phys.Lett.

    Retrieving Layer-Averaged Tropospheric Humidity from Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder Water Vapor Channels

    A method is presented to calculate layer-averaged tropospheric humidity (LAH) from the observations of the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) water vapor channels. The method is based on a linear relation between the satellite brightness temperatures (Tb) and natural logarithm of Jacobian weighted humidity. The empirical coefficients of this linear relation were calculated using different data sets, as well as a fast and a line-by-line radiative transfer (RT) model. It was found that the coefficients do not significantly depend on the data set or the RT model. This Tb to the LAH transformation method can be applied to either original or limb-corrected ATMS Tb's. The method was validated using both simulated and observed ATMS Tb's. The systematic difference between the estimated and calculated LAH values was less than 10% in most cases. We also tested the transformation method using a fixed Jacobian for each channel. The bias generally increases when fixed Jacobians are used, but there is still a satisfactory agreement between estimated and calculated LAH values. In addition, the spatial distribution of the bias was investigated using the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) Interim Reanalysis (ERA-interim) and collocated ATMS observations. The bias did not indicate any significant regional dependence when actual Jacobians were used, but in the case of fixed Jacobians, the bias generally increased from middle latitude toward the poles
