Basis Independent Measures of R-parity Violation

We construct basis-independent expressions that measure the magnitude of $R$-parity breaking due to possible superpotential terms in the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, in the absence of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms and spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking. Error correction method and apparatus for electronic timepieces

A method and apparatus for correcting errors in an electronic digital timepiece that includes an oscillator which has a 2 in. frequency output, an n-stage frequency divider for reducing the oscillator output frequency to a time keeping frequency, and means for displaying the count of the time keeping frequency. In first and second embodiments of the invention the timepiece is synchronized with a time standard at the beginning of the period of time T. In the first embodiment of the invention the timepiece user observes E (the difference between the time standard and the timepiece time at the end of the period T) and then operates a switch to correct the time of the timepiece and to obtain a count for E. In the second embodiment of the invention, the user operates a switch at the beginning of T and at the end of T and a count for E is obtained electronically

Search for Second and Third Generation Leptoquarks at CDF

We report the results of a search for second and third generation leptoquarks using 88 ${pb}^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Color triplet technipions, which play the role of scalar leptoquarks, are investigated due to their potential production in decays of strongly coupled color octet technirhos. Events with a signature of two heavy flavor jets and missing energy may indicate the decay of a second (third) generation leptoquark to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutrino. As the data is found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations, mass limits are determined.Comment: Talk given at DPF2000, Columbus (OH), 9-12 Aug 2000. 3 pages, 4 figures. Addressing data management training needs: a practice based approach from the UK

In this paper, we describe the current challenges to the effective management and preservation of research data in UK universities, and the response provided by the JISC Managing Research Data programme. This paper will discuss, inter alia, the findings and conclusions from data management training projects of the first iteration of the programme and how they informed the design of the second, paying particular attention to initiatives to develop and embed training materials

Heteroduplex analysis of tra delta f' plasmids and the mechanism of their formation

Four tra delta FargG+ plasmids, derived from matings between Hfr AB312 and a recA recipient, have been shown to have deletions of at least 50% of the F genome, including the region in which the tra genes map. The mutant plasmids do contain the F genes required for plasmid maintenance. Correlations can be made between, on the one hand, the F genes present on the tradelta F' plasmids and the F genes transferred early by an Hfr donor, and, on the other hand, the F genes deleted from the tradelta F' plasmids and the F genes transferred late by an Hfr donor. A biased representation of proximally and distally transferred chromosomal markers among the tradelta F' elements was also demonstrated. Taken Taken together, the asymmetrical representation of Hfr genes and the cis dominance of the Tra phenotype of these mutants can best be explained by the hypothesis that the tradelta F' plasmids are formed by repliconation of the transferred exogenote in a recA recipient

Cost-effectiveness of diagnostic laparoscopy for assessing resectability in pancreatic and periampullary cancer.

Surgical resection is the only curative treatment for pancreatic and periampullary cancer, but many patients undergo unnecessary laparotomy because tumours can be understaged by computerised tomography (CT). A recent Cochrane review found diagnostic laparoscopy can decrease unnecessary laparotomy. We compared the cost-effectiveness of diagnostic laparoscopy prior to laparotomy versus direct laparotomy in patients with pancreatic and periampullary cancer with resectable disease based on CT scanning

The selection, appraisal and retention of digital scientific data: dighlights of an ERPANET/CODATA workshop

CODATA and ERPANET collaborated to convene an international archiving workshop on the selection, appraisal, and retention of digital scientific data, which was held on 15-17 December 2003 at the Biblioteca Nacional in Lisbon, Portugal. The workshop brought together more than 65 researchers, data and information managers, archivists, and librarians from 13 countries to discuss the issues involved in making critical decisions regarding the long-term preservation of the scientific record. One of the major aims for this workshop was to provide an international forum to exchange information about data archiving policies and practices across different scientific, institutional, and national contexts.
