Increasing compliance with wearing a medical device in children with autism

Health professionals often recommend the use of medical devices to assess the health, monitor the well-being, or improve the quality of life of their patients. Children with autism may present challenges in these situations as their sensory peculiarities may increase refusals to wear such devices. To address this issue, we systematically replicated prior research by examining the effects of differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) to increase compliance with wearing a heart rate monitor in 2 children with autism. The intervention increased compliance to 100% for both participants when an edible reinforcer was delivered every 90 s. The results indicate that DRO does not require the implementation of extinction to increase compliance with wearing a medical device. More research is needed to examine whether the reinforcement schedule can be further thinned

'Throughout my life I've had people walk all over me': trauma in the lives of violent men

In this article we present original qualitative data gathered during prolonged ethnographic fieldwork with violent men in deindustrialised communities in the north of England. We use the data as an empirical platform for a theoretical exploration of the symbolism and subjectivising influences of traumatic life experiences in these men’s biographies. We conclude by making the tentative suggestion that there is a complex and mediated causal link between traumatic experience and a deep subjective commitment to aggression and violence in adulthood

Existence theorems for lagrange control problems with unbounded time domain

Existence theorems are proved for usual Lagrange control systems, in which the time domain is unbounded. As usual in Lagrange problems, the cost functional is an improper integral, the state equation is a system of ordinary differential equations, with assigned boundary conditions, and constraints may be imposed on the values of the state and control variables. It is shown that the boundary conditions at infinity require a particular analysis. The ‘one who knocks’ and the ‘one who waits’: Gendered violence in Breaking Bad

This article provides a cultural criminological analysis of the acclaimed US television series, Breaking Bad. It is argued here that – as a cultural text – Breaking Bad is emblematic of an agenda for change surrounding criminological theories of peoples’ propensity to do harm to one another. To exemplify this, the show’s central (male) protagonist is revealed to undergo a complete biosocial transformation into a violent offender and, as such, to demonstrate the need for criminological theory to recognise and further reflect upon this process. However, at the same time, the (re)presented inability of the show’s female characters to do the same is indicative of a number of gender-related questions that progressive criminological theories of violence need to answer. In considering these two fields in tandem, the show’s criminological significance is established; it is symbolic of the need for criminology to afford greater recognition to the nuanced intersections of both biological and sociological factors in the genesis and evolution of violent human subjectivities

A First measurement of the interaction cross-section of the tau neutrino

The DONuT experiment collected data in 1997 and published first results in 2000 based on four observed {nu}{sub {tau}} charged-current (CC) interactions. The final analysis of the data collected in the experiment is presented in this paper, based on 3.6 x 10{sup 17} protons on target using the 800 GeV Tevatron beam at Fermilab. The number of observed {nu}{sub {tau}} CC interactions is 9, from a total of 578 observed neutrino interactions. We calculated the energy-independent part of the tau-neutrino CC cross section ({nu} + {bar {nu}}), relative to the well-known {nu}{sub e} and {nu}{sub {mu}} cross sections. The ratio {sigma}({nu}{sub {tau}})/{sigma}({nu}{sub e,{mu}}) was found to be 1.37 {+-} 0.35 {+-} 0.77. The {nu}{sub {tau}} CC cross section was found to be 0.72 {+-} 0.24 {+-} 0.36 x 10{sup -38} cm{sup 2} GeV{sup -1}. Both results are in agreement with expectations from the Standard Model

Determinación de la madurez térmica de los carbones de la formación guaduas en el Sinclinal Checua - Lenguazaque

66 páginas : ilustraciones color, figuras, tablas.Se realizó un muestreo de los mantos de carbón en la formación Guaduas, flanco Occidental de la cuenca del sinclinal Checua-Lenguazaque, municipios de Sutatausa, Lenguazaque, Guachetá, Raquira y Samaca; con el fin de calcular el gradiente paleogeotérmico a partir del análisis reflectancia media de la vitrinita. El estudio determinó que los carbones de la zona tienen un rango de reflectancia media de 0.64 a 1.6, clasificándose como carbones desde bituminosos bajos volátiles hasta bituminosos altos volátiles. Para la determinación del gradiente paleogetermico se utilizó la fórmula propuesta por Baker, C & Pawlewicz, M, en la cual el valor de la reflectancia se tiene como variable principal; estableciéndose que para esta cuenta el gradiente geotérmico está en un rango de 520 C/Km hacia el sector de Sutatausa y de 1000C/Km hacia el sector de Samacá; asumiéndose que esta variación en el gradiente se debe al mayor efecto del fallamiento en la zona de Samacá que en Sutatausa.Bibliografía y webgrafía: páginas 64-65PregradoIngeniero Geólog

1954: Abilene Christian College Bible Lectures - Full Text

Preface The 1954 Abilene Christian College Lectureship was one of the best attended and most successful in the history of the school. Considerable interest was manifested in the timely theme, “Overcoming Dangerous Tendencies,” and in the two special topics, “Ways and Means of Doing Mission Work,” and “Caring For Widows and Orphans.” The reports from the mission fields were highly stimulating, and all in all, the speeches were unusually high caliber. The Panel Discussions were also on timely subjects and well presented. They received a warm response, as did also the thirty classes that were conducted each day. These classes were taught by persons expert in their particular fields, and covered a wide range of interests to the faithful, working Christian. We at Abilene Christian College predict for this book of Lectures a wide and hearty reception, and believe that its reading will issue in profit to the individual and to the church at large. J. D. Extensive myocardial infiltration by hemopoietic precursors in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome

BACKGROUND: Although myocardial infiltration with leukemic blasts is a known finding in patients with acute leukemia, this phenomenon in myelodysplasia is not reported in the literature. Cardiac symptoms in patients with myelodysplasia are often due to anemia and may be due to iron overload and side effects of therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein we report the first case of neoplastic infiltration of the heart with associated myocardial necrosis in a patient with myelodysplasia. It was associated with unicellular and multifocal geographic areas of necrosis in the left ventricle and the interventricular septum. It is likely that cardiac compromise in our patient was due to a combination of restrictive cardiomyopathy due to leukemic infiltration, concomitant anemia, cardiac dilatation, conduction blocks and myocardial necrosis. Myocardial necrosis was most likely due to a combination of ischemic damage secondary to anemia and prolonged hypotension and extensive leukemic infiltration. Markedly rapid decrease in ejection fraction from 66% to 33% also suggests the role of ischemia, since leukemic infiltration is not expected to cause this degree of systolic dysfunction over a 24-hour period. The diagnosis was not suspected during life due to concomitant signs and symptoms of anemia, pulmonary infections, and pericardial and pleural effusions. The patient succumbed to cardiac failure. CONCLUSION: Hemopoietic cell infiltration was not considered in the differential diagnosis and contributed to this patient's morbidity and mortality. This case highlights the clinical importance of considering myocardial infiltration in patients with myelodysplasia and cardiac symptoms
