    Vertical Networks and US Auto Parts Exports: Is Japan Different?

    This paper develops a model in which upstream network insiders' conduct relationship specific investment that induces the downstream firm to transact within networks. The scale of destination-country production and part-specific measures of the importance of network relationships and engineering costs are used to explain the pattern of U.S. auto parts exports. Our results support the prediction that large scale promotes relationship-specific investment and reduces imports. Also, while Japan is a large parts importer, the composition of its imports is shifted away from parts where vertical keiretsu are prominent. Nations hosting U.S.-owned automakers import more U.S. parts.

    Extraterritoriality of Restrictive State Abortion Laws: States Can Abort Plans to Abort at Home but Not Abroad

    The question of a state\u27s authority to legislate abortion extraterritorially may appear largely academic because of the United States Supreme Court\u27s holding in Roe v. Wade, in which the Court prohibited states from restricting abortions in the first trimester of pregnancy.\u27 At first glance, the Supreme Court\u27s recent decision in Planned Parenthood v. Casey\u27 appears to remove further the issue of extraterritorial abortion legislation from the states because the decision purportedly reaffirmed Roe.3 The Casey decision, however, does not preclude returning the abortion issue to the states. An extremely tenuous coalition of justices reaffirmed Roe, while a united group of dissenters argued that the Supreme Court should defer resolution of the abortion issue to state legislatures. 4 Furthermore, Casey\u27s undue burden standard allows states significant latitude in restricting abortion, and the decision does not address extraterritoriality.\u27 In the wake of the Casey decision, courts throughout the nation will have to confront the question of the legality of state-restrictive abortion laws.6 The post-Casey abortion landscape will largely resemble the pre-Roe landscape: a patchwork of states either legalizing or significantly restricting abortion, with women traveling interstate to obtain abortions.7 This Note examines the power of states to enact extraterritorial criminal abortion laws. Previous attempts to address this issue have failed to recognize any limits on a state\u27s authority to legislate restrictive abortion laws. This Note proposes a framework for addressing the legality of extraterritorial state legislation and for imposing restrictions on state extraterritorial legislative authority. Section I examines the timeliness of issues relating to extraterritorial criminal abortion legislation. Section II discusses possible sources for a state\u27s authority to legislate beyond its borders, focusing on the Model Penal Code\u27s discussion of extraterritoriality and the traditional international law bases for criminal jurisdiction. Section III addresses the applicability of international law principles to the separate states of the United States. Section IV applies the judicially recognized restrictions on a state\u27s power to legislate extraterritorially to the specific issue of extraterritorial criminal abortion legislation

    Quantum scissors: teleportation of single-mode optical states by means of a nonlocal single photon

    We employ the quantum state of a single photon entangled with the vacuum (|1,0>-|0,1>), generated by a photon incident upon a symmetric beam splitter, to teleport single-mode quantum states of light by means of the Bennett protocol. Teleportation of coherent states results in truncation of their Fock expansion to the first two terms. We analyze the teleported ensembles by means of homodyne tomography and obtain fidelities of up to 99 per cent for low source state amplitudes. This work is an experimental realization of the quantum scissors device proposed by Pegg, Phillips and Barnett (Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1604 (1998)

    Magnocellular and parvocellular influences on reflexive attention

    AbstractPrevious studies have provided conflicting evidence regarding whether the magnocellular (M) or parvocellular (P) visual pathway is primarily responsible for triggering involuntary orienting. Here, we used event-related potentials (ERPs) to provide new evidence that both the M and P pathways can trigger attentional capture and bias visual processing at multiple levels. Specifically, cued-location targets elicited enhanced activity, relative to uncued-location targets, at both early sensory processing levels (indexed by the P1 component) and later higher-order processing stages (as indexed by the P300 component). Furthermore, the present results show these effects of attentional capture were not contingent on the feature congruency between the cue and expected target, providing evidence that this biasing of visual processing was not dependant on top-down expectations or within-pathway priming

    Direct Visualization of Single Nuclear Pore Complex Proteins Using Genetically-Encoded Probes for DNA-PAINT

    The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is one of the largest and most complex protein assemblies in the cell and, among other functions, serves as the gatekeeper of nucleocytoplasmic transport. Unraveling its molecular architecture and functioning has been an active research topic for decades with recent cryogenic electron microscopy and super-resolution studies advancing our understanding of the architecture of the NPC complex. However, the specific and direct visualization of single copies of NPC proteins is thus far elusive. Herein, we combine genetically-encoded self-labeling enzymes such as SNAP-tag and HaloTag with DNA-PAINT microscopy. We resolve single copies of nucleoporins in the human Y-complex in three dimensions with a precision of circa 3 nm, enabling studies of multicomponent complexes on the level of single proteins in cells using optical fluorescence microscopy

    An improved model for the Earth's gravity field

    An improved model for the Earth's gravity field, TEG-1, was determined using data sets from fourteen satellites, spanning the inclination ranges from 15 to 115 deg, and global surface gravity anomaly data. The satellite measurements include laser ranging data, Doppler range-rate data, and satellite-to-ocean radar altimeter data measurements, which include the direct height measurement and the differenced measurements at ground track crossings (crossover measurements). Also determined was another gravity field model, TEG-1S, which included all the data sets in TEG-1 with the exception of direct altimeter data. The effort has included an intense scrutiny of the gravity field solution methodology. The estimated parameters included geopotential coefficients complete to degree and order 50 with selected higher order coefficients, ocean and solid Earth tide parameters, Doppler tracking station coordinates and the quasi-stationary sea surface topography. Extensive error analysis and calibration of the formal covariance matrix indicate that the gravity field model is a significant improvement over previous models and can be used for general applications in geodesy
