    The demand for resources to support emotional and behavioural development in early childhood is ever increasing. However, conventional interventions are lacking in resources and have significant barriers. The Embers the Dragon programme helps address the growing unmet need of children requiring support. The delivery of the current project seeks to help support parents, reduce the burden placed on pressed services (eg, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and to help improve the emotional and behavioural development of children. This project aims to investigate the efficacy and acceptability of Embers on parenting and children's psychosocial outcomes. 364 parents/guardians of children aged between 4 and 7 will be recruited via the internet, schools and general practitioners (GPs). This is an online waitlist-controlled trial with three arms: (1) control arm, (2) access to Embers arm and (3) access to Embers+school. Participants will be randomised (1:1) into (1) or (2) to evaluate the use of Embers at home. To evaluate scalability in schools, (3) will be compared with (2), and (1) to test efficacy against treatment as usual (not receiving the intervention). Qualitative interviews will also be conducted. Primary outcomes are the Parental Self-efficacy Scale, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and qualitative interviews. Outcomes will be compared between the three groups at baseline, 8, 16 and 24 weeks. Ethical approval has been granted by the London South Bank University ethics panel (ETH2324-0004). To recruit via GPs, NHS ethical approval has been applied for, and the IRAS (331410) application is under consideration by the Central Bristol REC. The results of the project will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Parents/guardians will provide informed consent online prior to taking part in the study.     Harnessing lived experience in a community-based intervention to address gambling-related harms

    Background Lived experience of people directly or indirectly affected by public health issues can provide unique insights into how to improve interventions. Increasing availability of gambling necessitates involving communities in efforts to reduce gambling-related harms. This presentation reports qualitative exploratory research into the value of lived experience across a city-region gambling harm reduction initiative in the UK. Methods Focus groups and interviews were used to explore the practical application of lived experience with participants: advisory panel members, external stakeholders, community project staff, and public health professionals. Collaborative data analysis combined the framework method with theme development inductively (from participants’ accounts) and deductively (from academic and grey literature). Results Four themes were identified: (1) lived experience spans formal and informal settings with different activities and personal impacts; (2) organic and structured pathways to lived experience involvement coexist; (3) the emotional work of people affected by gambling-related harms ranges from frustration at policy inertia to deeper understanding of their own recovery journey; and (4) lived experience encompasses diverse experiential knowledges. Conclusions Involving lived experience in this intervention increased participants’ awareness of the harmful role of the gambling industry and critical reflection on the representativeness of lived experience. Harnessing lived experience at a regional level requires multi-setting support free from stigma and industry influence to ensure the sustained vitality of a diverse lived experience community specialised in gambling-related harms and equipped to navigate conflicting emotions and a challenging policy environment.     Endothelial Cell Thrombin Receptors and PAR-2 TWO PROTEASE-ACTIVATED RECEPTORS LOCATED IN A SINGLE CELLULAR ENVIRONMENT

    Human endothelial cells express thrombin receptors and PAR-2, the two known members of the family of protease-activated G protein-coupled receptors. Because previous studies have shown that the biology of the human thrombin receptor varies according to the cell in which it is expressed, we have taken advantage of the presence of both receptors in endothelial cells to examine the enabling and disabling interactions with candidate proteases likely to be encountered in and around the vascular space to compare the responses elicited by the two receptors when they are present in the same cell and to compare the mechanisms of thrombin receptor and PAR-2 clearance and replacement in a common cellular environment. Of the proteases that were tested, only trypsin activated both receptors. Cathepsin G, which disables thrombin receptors, had no effect on PAR-2, while urokinase, kallikrein, and coagulation factors IXa, Xa, XIa, and XIIa neither substantially activated nor noticeably disabled either receptor. Like thrombin receptors, activation of PAR-2 caused pertussis toxin-sensitive phospholipase C activation as well as activation of phospholipase A2, leading to the release of PGI2. Concurrent activation of both receptors caused a greater response than activation of either alone. It also abolished a subsequent response to the PAR-2 agonist peptide, SLIGRL, while only partially inhibiting the response to the agonist peptide, SFLLRN, which activates both receptors. After proteolytic or nonproteolytic activation, PAR-2, like thrombin receptors, was cleared from the endothelial cell surface and then rapidly replaced with new receptors by a process that does not require protein synthesis. Selective activation of either receptor had no effect on the clearance of the other. These results suggest that the expression of both thrombin receptors and PAR-2 on endothelial cells serves more to extend the range of proteases to which the cells can respond than it does to extend the range of potential responses. The results also show that proteases that can disable these receptors can distinguish between them, just as do most of the proteases that activate them. Finally, the residual response to SFLLRN after activation of thrombin receptors and PAR-2 raises the possibility that a third, as yet unidentified member of this family is expressed on endothelial cells, one that is activated by neither thrombin nor trypsin

    Creativity and the computer nerd: an exploration of attitudes

    This study arises from our concern that many of our best art and design students are failing to make the most of the opportunities provided by IT because of their fear or dislike of computers. This not only deprives them of useful skills, but, even more importantly, deprives many IT based developments of their input. In this paper we investigate the relationship between attitudes to creativity and to computers among students. We quickly discard an approach based on theories of personality types as philosophically and educationally problematic. An approach based on the self-concept of artists and designers, in relation to their own creativity and to their feelings about computers, offers more hope of progress. This means that we do not try to define the attributes of "creative people". Rather, we ask what creativity means to students of art and design and relate these responses to their attitudes to computers. Self-concept depends on how the subjects see themselves within society and culture, and is liable to change as culture changes. One major instrument of cultural change at the present time is the growth of IT itself. We then describe a first attempt at using a psychological method - Kelly's Repertory Grids - to investigate the self-concept of artists and designers. It is hoped to continue with this approach in further studies over the next few years

    Embodying limb absence in the negotiation of sexual intimacy

    Some people with physical disabilities experience difficulties in forming and maintaining intimate and sexual relationships (Taleporos and McCabe, 2001). Individuals with physical impairments may variously be seen as inferior, ‘not up to scratch’ and can be less valued than those thought to embody the cultural ideal of ‘normality’ (Edwards and Imrie, 2003). The loss of an anatomical part such as an arm or a leg can therefore set up a complex series of perceptual, emotional and psychological responses that can limit or prevent individuals from fully experiencing the kinds of intimate relationships that many of their ‘non-disabled’ counterparts can more freely enjoy (Oliver, 1990). Drawing on a series of semi-structured interviews and a group visual workshop with five men and two women with varying acquired and congenital limb absences, this study explores the variety of ways in which sexual relationships and intimacies are negotiated and managed. Certain participants reported a great deal of anxiety regarding their perceptions of sexual attractiveness, and experienced feelings of loss of desirability as a sexual partner. Others reported engaging in an ‘active management of visual information’ about the body, through methods of concealment and exposure. Compensatory strategies were also reported as a way to effectively maintain existing intimate relationships. Finally, hyper-masculine or hyper-feminine enactments of sexuality were described within a range of social and intimate contexts as a means to ‘normalise’ the disabled body. The findings of this study provide a richer and more contextualised understanding of the highly complex adjustment process faced by individuals with limb absence, who actively engage in sexual and intimate relationships
