Electron-beam-induced shift in the apparent position of a pinned vortex in a thin superconducting film

When an electron beam strikes a superconducting thin film near a pinned vortex, it locally increases the temperature-dependent London penetration depth and perturbs the circulating supercurrent, thereby distorting the vortex's magnetic field toward the heated spot. This phenomenon has been used to visualize vortices pinned in SQUIDs using low-temperature scanning electron microscopy. In this paper I develop a quantitative theory to calculate the displacement of the vortex-generated magnetic-flux distribution as a function of the distance of the beam spot from the vortex core. The results are calculated using four different models for the spatial distribution of the thermal power deposited by the electron beam.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, resubmitted to PRB with referee-suggested revisions, includes new paragraph on numerical evaluatio

Comparison of the National Bureau of Standards and the Helsinki Temperature Scales and its Effect on the Heat Capacity of Liquid 3He below 10 mK

    Get PDF
The Helsinki temperature scale, used earlier in measurements of the heat capacity of liquid 3He (1-10 mK), is compared with the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) noise and nuclear-orientation temperature scale. The superfluid transition temperature (Tc) of 3He at zero pressure and the superconductive transition temperatures of tungsten and beryllium were used as fixed points. Tc on the NBS scale was found to be 1.025 ± 0.02 mK, in close agreement with the Helsinki value 1.04 mK. The results support the Helsinki data on the heat capacity of 3He.Peer reviewe

Microwave Current Imaging in Passive HTS Components by Low-Temperature Laser Scanning Microscopy (LTLSM)

We have used the LTLSM technique for a spatially resolved investigation of the microwave transport properties, nonlinearities and material inhomogeneities in an operating coplanar waveguide YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} (YBCO) microwave resonator on an LaAlO_3 (LAO) substrate. The influence of twin-domain blocks, in-plane rotated grains, and micro-cracks in the YBCO film on the nonuniform rf current distribution were measured with a micrometer-scale spatial resolution. The impact of the peaked edge currents and rf field penetration into weak links on the linear device performance were studied as well. The LTLSM capabilities and its future potential for non-destructive characterization of the microwave properties of superconducting circuits are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 2-column format, presented at High Temperature Superconductors in High Frequency Fields 2004, Journal of Superconductivity (in press
