    Cities in the Developing World

    Rapid urbanisation is a major feature of developing countries. Some 2 billion more people are likely to become city residents in the next 30 years, yet urbanisation has received little attention in the modern development economics literature. This paper reviews theoretical and empirical work on the determinants and effects of urbanisation. This suggests that there are substantial productivity benefits from cities, although unregulated outcomes may well lead to excessive primacy as externalities and coordination failures inhibit decentralisation of economic activity. Policy should operate both by identifying and addressing these market failures, and by seeking to remove institutional obstacles to decentralisation.Urbanisation, economic development

    The Economic Geography of Trade, Production, and Income: A Survey of Empirics

    This paper surveys the empirical literature on the economic geography of trade flows, factor prices, and the location of production. The discussion is structured around the empirical predictions of a canonical theoretical model. We review empirical evidence on the determinants of trade costs and the effects of these costs on trade flows. Geography is a major determinant of factor prices, and access to foreign markets alone is shown to explain some 35% of the cross-country variation in per capita income. The paper documents empirical findings of home market (or magnification) effects, suggesting that imperfectly competitive industries are drawn more than proportionately to locations with good market access. Sub-national evidence establishes the presence of industrial clustering, and we examine the roles played by product market linkages to customer and supplier firms, knowledge spillovers, and labour market externalities.

    We develop a diagrammatic framework that can be used to study the economic linkages between regions or cities. Hitherto, such linkages have not been the primary focus of either the theoretical or empirical literatures. We show that our general framework can be used to interpret both the New Economic Geography and Urban Systems literatures to help us understand spatial economic linkages. We then extend the theoretical framework to allow us to consider a number of additional issues which may be particularly important for analyzing the impact of policy. Such policy analysis will also require empirical work to identify the nature of key relationships.     Gigaflop performance on a CRAY-2: Multitasking a computational fluid dynamics application

    The methodology is described for converting a large, long-running applications code that executed on a single processor of a CRAY-2 supercomputer to a version that executed efficiently on multiple processors. Although the conversion of every application is different, a discussion of the types of modification used to achieve gigaflop performance is included to assist others in the parallelization of applications for CRAY computers, especially those that were developed for other computers. An existing application, from the discipline of computational fluid dynamics, that had utilized over 2000 hrs of CPU time on CRAY-2 during the previous year was chosen as a test case to study the effectiveness of multitasking on a CRAY-2. The nature of dominant calculations within the application indicated that a sustained computational rate of 1 billion floating-point operations per second, or 1 gigaflop, might be achieved. The code was first analyzed and modified for optimal performance on a single processor in a batch environment. After optimal performance on a single CPU was achieved, the code was modified to use multiple processors in a dedicated environment. The results of these two efforts were merged into a single code that had a sustained computational rate of over 1 gigaflop on a CRAY-2.     Majorana Electroformed Copper Mechanical Analysis

    The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is a large array of ultra-low background high-purity germanium detectors, enriched in 76Ge, designed to search for zero-neutrino double-beta decay. The DEMONSTRATOR will utilize ultra high purity electroformed copper for a variety of detector components and shielding. A preliminary mechanical evaluation was performed on the Majorana prototype electroformed copper material. Several samples were removed from a variety of positions on the mandrel. Tensile testing, optical metallography, scanning electron microscopy, and hardness testing were conducted to evaluate mechanical response. Analyses carried out on the Majorana prototype copper to this point show consistent mechanical response from a variety of test locations. Evaluation shows the copper meets or exceeds the design specifications

    Impact of in vitro assembly defects on in vivo function of the phage P22 portal

    AbstractThe podovirus P22, which infects O-antigen strains of Salmonella, incorporates a dsDNA translocating channel (portal dodecamer) at a unique vertex of the icosahedral capsid. The portal subunit (gp1, 82.7 kDa) exhibits multiple S–H⋯X hydrogen bonding states for cysteines 153, 173, 283 and 516 and these interactions are strongly perturbed by portal ring formation. Here, we analyze in vivo activities of wild type (wt) and Cys→Ser mutant portals, demonstrate that in vivo activity is correlated with in vitro assembly kinetics, and suggest mechanistic bases for the observed assembly defects. The C283S portal protein, which assembles into rings at about half the rate of wt, exhibits significantly diminished infectivity (∼50% of wt) and manifests its defect prior to DNA packaging, most likely at the stage of procapsid assembly. Conversely, the C516S mutant, which assembles at twice the rate of wt, is more severely deficient in vivo (∼20% of wt) and manifests its defect subsequent to capsid maturation and DNA packaging. Both C153S and C173S portals function at levels close to wt. The results suggest that C283S and C516S mutations may be exploited for improved characterization of the folding and assembly pathway of P22 portal protein

    Non-Darcy flow characteristics of water as influenced by clay concentration

    The flow of water through saturated samples of montmorillonite and kaolinite was studied to help clarify the existence and nature of non-Darcian flow. No threshold gradients were found in any of the samples studied. Non-Darcy flow was found in 9, 30 and 40 weight percent montmorillonite samples but not in a 50 weight percent montmorillonite or in kaolinite samples. The possible causes of the non-Darcian flow are discussed. A refined technique using a pressure transducer was developed to measure hydraulic conductivities. The hydraulic conductivities of several types of samples under varying conditions were measured.     Successful treatment of recurrent small bowel adenocarcinoma by cytoreductive surgery and chemotherapy: a case report and review of the literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Small bowel adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy associated with a poor prognosis and there is little evidence of effective treatment. Recurrent small bowel adenocarcinoma is an intractable disease for which there is little information available regarding its treatment by palliative therapy. We present a case of recurrent small bowel adenocarcinoma successfully treated by cytoreductive surgery and palliative chemotherapy.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 72-year-old Japanese female who developed a peritoneal metastasis from recurrent small bowel adenocarcinoma after curative resection and adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 and polysaccharide K. She underwent cytoreductive surgery followed by chemotherapy with folinic acid/fluorouracil/oxaliplatin and folinic acid/fluorouracil/irinotecan with polysaccharide K. Subsequently, no sign of a recurrence was observed 42 months after the second operation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of the successful treatment of peritoneal metastasis from small bowel adenocarcinoma by cytoreductive surgery and combination chemotherapy (folinic acid/fluorouracil/oxaliplatin and folinic acid/fluorouracil/irinotecan with polysaccharide K).</p
