    Developing markets? Understanding the role of markets and development at the intersection of macromarketing and transformative consumer research (TCR)

    Situated at the intersection of markets and development, this commentary aims to promote a cross-fertilization of macromarketing and Transformative Consumer Research (TCR) that directs attention to the sociocultural context and situational embeddedness of consumer experience and well-being, while acknowledging complex, systemic interdependencies between markets, marketing, and society. Based on a critical review of the meaning of development and an interrogation of various developmental discourses, the authors develop a conceptual framework that brings together issues of development, well-being, and social inequalities. We suggest that these issues are better understood and addressed when examined via grounded investigations of the role of markets in shaping the management of resources, consumer agency, power inequalities and ethics. The use of markets as units of analysis may lead to further cross-fertilizations of TCR and macromarketing and to more comprehensive theorizing and transformational impact. Two empirical cases are provided to illustrate our framework

    Prognosis of Vascular Surgery Patients Using a Quantitative Assessment of Troponin T Release: Is the Crystal Ball still Clear?

    AbstractBackgroundCardiac troponin T (cTnT) assays with increased sensitivity might increase the number of positive tests. Using the area under the curve (AUC) with serial sampling of cTnT an exact quantification of the myocardial damage size can be made. We compared the prognosis of vascular surgery patients with integrated cTnT–AUC values to continuous and standard 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) changes.Methods513 Patients were monitored. cTnT sampling was performed on postoperative days 1, 3, 7, 30 and/or at discharge or whenever clinically indicated. If cTnT release occurred, daily measurements of cTnT were performed, until baseline was achieved. CTnT–AUC was quantified and divided in tertiles. All-cause mortality and cardiovascular events (cardiac death and myocardial infarction) were noted during follow-up.Results81/513 (16%) Patients had cTnT release. After adjustment for gender, cardiac risk factors, and site and type of surgery, those in the highest cTnT–AUC tertile were associated with a significantly worse cardiovascular outcome and long-term mortality (HR 20.2; 95% CI 10.2–40.0 and HR 4.0; 95% CI 2.0–7.8 respectively). Receiver operator analysis showed that the best cut-off value for cTnT–AUC was <0.01 days*ng m for predicting long-term cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality.ConclusionIn vascular surgery patients quantitative assessment of cTnT strongly predicts long-term outcome

    Construction and validation of a low-cost system for indoor air quality measurements in livestock facilities

    In recent years, there has been an increase in demand for food of ani-mal origin. The number of intensive production systems such as pig and poultry farming has been increasing more and more and exerting great impacts on the environment, due to a large amount of particulate material and gaseous pollutants that are generated within these facilities. Thus, low-cost devices emerge as a cheap alternative that provides farmers with information on indoor air quality in its facilities. However, it is important that these devices make precise and accu-rate measurements, providing reliable concentration readings. Therefore, the ob-jective of this study is the construction and validation of a low-cost system capa-ble of measuring, storing and sending, via the mobile network, the concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, carbon dioxide, PM2.5, PM10, temperature, and relative humidity. Preliminary inter-comparison tests showed that the built sys-tem had a reliable behavior in relation to all variables, even though the CO2 sen-sor was the one with the highest determination coefficient.     Polygenic liability for schizophrenia and childhood adversity influences daily‐life emotion dysregulation and psychosis proneness

    Objective To test whether polygenic risk score for schizophrenia (PRS-S) interacts with childhood adversity and daily-life stressors to influence momentary mental state domains (negative affect, positive affect, and subtle psychosis expression) and stress-sensitivity measures. Methods The data were retrieved from a general population twin cohort including 593 adolescents and young adults. Childhood adversity was assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Daily-life stressors and momentary mental state domains were measured using ecological momentary assessment. PRS-S was trained on the latest Psychiatric Genetics Consortium schizophrenia meta-analysis. The analyses were conducted using multilevel mixed-effects tobit regression models. Results Both childhood adversity and daily-life stressors were associated with increased negative affect, decreased positive affect, and increased subtle psychosis expression, while PRS-S was only associated with increased positive affect. No gene-environment correlation was detected. There is novel evidence for interaction effects between PRS-S and childhood adversity to influence momentary mental states [negative affect (b = 0.07, P = 0.013), positive affect (b = -0.05, P = 0.043), and subtle psychosis expression (b = 0.11, P = 0.007)] and stress-sensitivity measures. Conclusion Exposure to childhood adversities, particularly in individuals with high PRS-S, is pleiotropically associated with emotion dysregulation and psychosis proneness

    Appearance of vertices of infinite order in a model of random trees

    We study an equilibrium statistical mechanical model of tree graphs which are made up of a linear subgraph (the spine) to which leaves are attached. We prove that the model has two phases, a generic phase where the spine becomes infinitely long in the thermodynamic limit and all vertices have finite order and a condensed phase where the spine is finite with probability one and a single vertex of infinite order appears in the thermodynamic limit. We calculate the spectral dimension of the graphs in both phases and prove the existence of a Gibbs measure. We discuss generalizations of this model and the relationship with models of nongeneric random trees.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure

    The Close AGN Reference Survey (CARS): An Interplay between Radio Jets and AGN Radiation in the Radio-quiet AGN HE0040-1105

    We present a case study of HE 0040-1105, an unobscured radio-quiet active galactic nucleus (AGN) at a high accretion rate of λ Edd = 0.19 ± 0.04. This particular AGN hosts an ionized gas outflow with the largest spatial offset from its nucleus compared to all other AGNs in the Close AGN Reference Survey. By combining multiwavelength observations from the Very Large Telescope/MUSE, Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3, Very Large Array, and European VLBI Network, we probe the ionization conditions, gas kinematics, and radio emission from host galaxy scales to the central few parsecs. We detect four kinematically distinct components, one of which is a spatially unresolved AGN-driven outflow located within the central 500 pc, where it locally dominates the interstellar medium conditions. Its velocity is too low to escape the host galaxy’s gravitational potential, and may be re-accreted onto the central black hole via chaotic cold accretion. We detect compact radio emission in HE 0040-1105 within the region covered by the outflow, varying on a timescale of ∌20 yr. We show that neither AGN coronal emission nor star formation processes wholly explain the radio morphology/spectrum. The spatial alignment between the outflowing ionized gas and the radio continuum emission on 100 pc scales is consistent with a weak jet morphology rather than diffuse radio emission produced by AGN winds. &gt;90% of the outflowing ionized gas emission originates from the central 100 pc, within which the ionizing luminosity of the outflow is comparable to the mechanical power of the radio jet. Although radio jets might primarily drive the outflow in HE 0040-1105, radiation pressure from the AGN may contribute to this process
